典型例题
【例1】(上海阅读A篇)限时7分
Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the MagicKingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria's new friend with "her" ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won't last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I'm sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favorite. I'm learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next, we’re going to travel to Mr. Phairat’s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. I’m going to ride those elephants—and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.
I’m amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important pan of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol(象征)of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants forbattle.
I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing(拳击)lessons next time I write.
Love,
Mandy

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this high tower in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw several streets leading to the square. ‘‘See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can't get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not help. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She tried one spoonful and sputtered. “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother promised that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible way. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

Join the Roller Coaster Club!
You’re sitting in a tiny car. The car is part of a very small train that runs on a narrow track. Slowly, the little train climbs to the top of a huge hill.
You’re high above the grounds, so high that you can see for miles. Suddenly, you rush toward the ground at a speed that takes your breath away. You’re on your way up again, and this time you’re upside down!
You go up, down, and around. You’re on a roller coaster (过山车). Some people think riding a roller coaster is really terrifying. One ride is more than enough for them, even in a lifetime. However, other people love riding roller coasters. They ride their favorite roller coaster over and over. They also like to try out new roller coaster.
There’s a club for people who are very crazy at riding roller coasters. It’s called ACE. ACE is a short form for American Coaster Enthusiasts(热衷者). Steven Reagan and Kevin Lipnicky belong to ACE, and so do their families. Their family holidays often include trips to amusement parks to ride on new roller coasters.
As members of ACE, the boys were among the first to ride a new roller coaster at Sea World in Texas. It’s called the Great White, which is the name of a kind of shark.
Sometimes, amusement parks close the roller coaster to everyone except ACE members.
“If there’s no one in line,” says Steven, ‘”we keep our seats and ride again!”
It’s not all fun for ACE members. They also have a job to do. They tell owners of new amusement parks there the old roller coasters are. The owners buy the old roller coasters and move them to new homes so that they can be fixed instead of being destroyed (毁坏).
For ACE members, roller coaster riding is fun, fun, fun! People are thankful to the work they do to save different old roller coasters.
