Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. “I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note?” he said to mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.
Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is “OK”, but he often gets “You can do better than this.” Mum knows what it means. She tells me “You can do better than this” means “Extremely bad” in China.
In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is “Please be nicer tomorrow”. Many parents are satisfied with a B-grade for each subject.
But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spend more time on homework than I did when I was 6th grade in the US! Yet his parents and teachers didn't think he worked hard enough.
Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.
(1)Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday?
A. Because the teacher wanted to visit his mother.
B. Because he did something wrong.
C. Because the teacher was happy with his progress.
D. Because the teacher thought he was too lazy.

B. Chinese students are better than American students
C. American parents are not strict enough with their children
D. what's the best way to educate child

Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.
So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.
But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.
German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!
(1)What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?
A. They walk more slowly. B. They can relax.
C. They watch more TV. D. They do less well at school.
(2)The main idea of the second paragraph is .
A. how much sleep we need B. children don't get enough sleep
C. our brains never really go to sleep D. TVs and computers are the problem
(3)How does a bedtime story help children get a good sleep?
A. It helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. B. Children lose more sleep.
C. Children have more energy. D. Children get to sleep later.
(4)Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or computer?
A. You can read stories before you go to sleep. B. You sleep better and get more sleep.
C. You have less energy. D. Your brain works better.
(5)What did the German scientists' experiment show?
A. Sleep helps children learn to read. B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.
C. Your brain works while you are asleep. D. Parents should read bedtime stories.

A 50-year-old American officer came back to his school. The teacher asked him to give a talk to the small boys and girls there. The talk was about the love of their great country. All the little ones were sitting in a large meeting room. The old officer went up and began speaking. He said, “Boys and girls, I studied in this school forty years ago. When I was your age, we were not as happy as you are today. Think about it and answer me. Why are you so happy now?”
No sound came from the children. The old man waited for a long time. Then a short boy in front put up his small dirty hand. “Good boy! Please answer me, dear.” said the officer.

Years ago, if a teenager(青少年) had some problems in his life, he might write them in his diary. Now a teenager with the same problems might get on the Internet and write in his blog(博客). In many ways, a diary and a blog are almost the same. So, what makes a blog different from a diary?
The biggest difference is that a blog is much more public(公开的) than a diary. Usually, a teenager likes hiding his diary book and treats it as one full of secrets. Both diaries and blogs tell what happened to the writer that day.
A blog has both good and bad points. The biggest problem is that anyone can read what you write in your blog. If you are not pleased with a friend during school and write something bad about him or her on the Internet, that friend may read your blog and get angry. So we have to be careful of what we write.
A blog has good points, of course. People choose to write in blogs: they know that their friends will read what they write. If you are feeling sad one day and write in your diary, no one will know about it. If you write the same words in your blog, your friends may quickly write back to comfort(安慰) you or give their help. Blogs help people stay in close contact(联系) and let them know what their friends are doing.
(1)In the past, teenagers wrote life problems ________. But now they like writing problems ________.
(2)In many ways, a diary and a blog are ________. Both of them tell ________.
(3)A blog has both ________ points. ________ can read what you write in your blog.
(4)If you write ________ about your friend in your blog, he may ________ after reading it.

This is a conversation between a human "user" and a computer. The computer was made to be as human as possible. It was taught to talk to humans. It has also learnt from what people have said to it. This has helped it become more human.
What makes George talk is called Jabberwacky. It won the Loebner Prize not long ago. The prize is a contest to find the most realistic artificial intelligence (现实的人工智能). In 2006, scientists talked to the computer. They typed questions to it, and it answered.
Jabberwacky first appeared in 1982. It has been gelling better every year since then. The list of things that the computer says to a human is getting bigger and bigger. It means the computer has more things to say when you talk to it.
It is hoped that a computer like this will do our jobs in call centres. When Jabberwacky is more realistic, this will be possible.

A. He's a computer. B. He's a monkey. C. He's an engineer. D. He's a scientist.

A. To tell us a joke about a monkey and human.
B. To show us the computer has become more human.
C. To show us what the computer is able to do now.
D. To tell us the computer can't be as clever as humans.
(3)What's the main function (功能) of Jabberwacky?
