You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person〞? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person〞. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana〞, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.
Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas〔海外的〕Chinese. These people may be citizens〔公民〕of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang〔杨振宁〕. He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.
61. “ABCs〞 in this passage means .
A. three English letters B. a kind of banana
C. Chinese born in America D. Americans born in China
62. Chinese in Western countries are called “banana persons〞 because .
A. their bodies are white inside but yellow outside
B. they think like Westerners but look like Chinese
C. they were born in China but go to study in America
D. they like to eat bananas
63. The underlined word “blood〞 may probably mean .
A. 洪水 B. 祖先 C. 血统 D. 身份
64. Which of the sentences is WRONG about ABCs?
A. ABCs may know little about China. B. They are overseas Chinese.
C. They may speak little Chinese. D. They are Chinese citizens.
65. This passage mainly talks about .
A. different kinds of bananas B. overseas Chinese

Drriinnggg! That’s the sound children across the country do not want to hear—the alarm bell (闹铃). This means children across the UK have to wake up bright and early to go to school. But students at one school in north-east England can lie in bed for one more hour before they go to school. Lessons at Monkseaton High School begin at 10 a.m. and finish at 3.40 p.m. However, the school opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monkseaton High School says it’s OK for students to come into school an hour later than other schools. The headmaster, Dr. Paul Kelley, says that it helps students to be more active in class. He feels that young people work better later in the day and a late start may be better for their school life than an early one. Dr. Kelley told the BBC that teenagers don’t work very well in the morning and their need to sleep is biological (生物学的).
This new approach (做法) to teaching has shown good results. The school has already seen a drop in the number of students playing truant (逃学) by 27%. More importantly, Dr. Kelley also said that exam results have improved by 20-30% over the past year.

Robot Green was 31 years old when he went to college. That was his first time he came into the classroom. Eleven years later he received a doctor’s degree in physics. Robert Green was a good example in studies for all people. His life was a moving story.
From a young age, Robert Green lived a simple and poor life with his grandfather in the mountains of Boston. His grandfather taught him to read.
