Page 1 of 2 Changing Vacuum Pump Oil The vacuum pump requires a supply of clean oil to operate.The frequency of oil changes depends on your applications and the amount of time in operation.It is also important regularly to monitor the condition of the oil,which must be changed as soon as it becomes noticeably discolored.Change the oil after 3 to 4 months of operation,or more frequently if the oil turns dark in color.Keep a record of your oil changes.NOTE:NOTE:CAUTION:If you need to shut down the ZQ for an extended period,be sure to replace the oil in the pump with fresh oil and then run the pump for 30 minutes before you shut down the pump.Follow the procedure for changing the oil as described in this section.Tools/Materials:You need the following materials to change the oil:?Rubber gloves?Container in which to drain the oil(at least 1liter capacity)?Funnel(if required for container type)Spare Parts:?Q45 vacuum oil(700000870)1 gallon(Use only the oil recommended by Waters)(WAT241183)case of(12)1 liter bottles Procedure:To change the oil:1.Vent the system by clicking Options Vent on the MassLynx tune page.Click Yes when the message box appears.It will be easier to drain the oil while the pump is still warm.2.Elevate the pump at least 6 to 8 inches(15.2 to 20.3 cm)off the supporting surface if it is not already elevated.To avoid lifting or burn injury,use caution when lifting the vacuum pump.Lift the pump by the lifting bracket with suitable lifting equipment.Be sure to wear gloves.3.Place a container under the drain plug to catch the contaminated oil.4.Slightly loosen one of the oil filler plugs.Do not remove the plug.5.Remove the oil drain plug to allow the oil to start draining out of the pump.6.Slowly remove the oil filler plug.7.Allow the oil to drain completely.Tip the pump forward to allow all the oil to drain from the pump.Return to NavigatorPrint ProcedureBookmarks Page 2 of 2 NOTE:8.After the oil has drained completely,flush residual oil from the pump by performing the following steps:a.Replace the oil drain plug.b.Use a funnel to add oil to the MIN mark on the sight glass(about 300 mL).c.Replace the oil filler plug.d.Then,turn the pump ON through the MassLynx Software,by clicking Options and selecting Pump.e.Run the pump for 10 to 15 minutes,then turn the pump OFF by clicking Options and selecting Vent.Click Yes when the message box appears.f.Remove the oil drain plug,and again drain the oil completely.g.Repeat steps a.to f.until the oil appears clean.9.Replace the oil drain plug.10.Check the inside of the sight glass to see if it needs to be cleaned.11.Use a funnel to add oil to the MAX line.This requires approximately 1000 mL of oil.12.Allow a few minutes for the oil to drain into the pump and recheck the level.Add more oil if necessary,but avoid overfilling the pump.Be aware that it is normal for the oil level to drop about 10 percent after you power on the pump.13.Reinstall the oil filler plug.14.Turn the pump ON by clicking Options and selecting Pump on the MassLynx Tune page.15.Perform“Gas ballasting”after adding oil:a.Open the gas ballast knob on the top of the pump.b.Run the pump for 30 to 60 minutes.c.Close the gas ballast knob.
