Education and Culture Shock
A: I have a lot of overseas friends, what about you?
B: I have some friends are studying abroad too, they are in United States, Europe, Japan, almost all over the world.
A: How do you think about this situation?
B: It is very popular to study abroad now. Because the Chinese economic conditions is becoming better, parents can support the cost of their children going abroad. But, many Chinese students are experiencing “culture shock”, they may intend to return to China.
A: Culture shock? What is that? Can you give me some examples?
B: Sure. Culture shock means the difficulties Chinese students have in the daily life. Above all, language is the biggest challenge, some students have to go to language school for years. And different culture background brings difficulties to daily life.
A: That’s true. I’ve heard something from my friends, culture difference exist in almost everywhere, just like people, foods, music, value, the way of thinking, everything are different.
B: there’s another thing you must haven’t heard, that is Culture shock not only happens between Chinese and foreign cultures, but also happen between Chinese people. I know a student who came back to china from US because he couldn’t blend in local Chinese, guess why? Because the local Chinese all speak Cantonese。
A: That’ interesting. I think the impact of education on culture is also important, the students could build their culture confidence from childhood may be less vulnerable to international shocks.
B: Yes, I agree with you. China's educational neglect our traditional culture and the cultivation of national spirit, such as traditional festivals were ignored, while Western holidays such as Christmas, Valentine's Day, are very popular, we have to change this situation.
A: I share your sentiments, for example, there are many overseas Confucius institutes, and I think this approach will help us pass on Chinese culture.
B: Yes, I know some Confucius institute teacher, in Thailand, Turkey and Azerbaijan. There are more and more foreigners start learning Chinese culture, I think this is a good sign.
A: It sounds great. I hope our Chinese culture could be spread all over the world.
