A
Why haven’t I left yet? Everyone seems to be asking me this question now. Clearly their having to say goodbye as if it’s the last time they’re ever going to see me is beginning to wear out my friends. Some of the unfortunate must have said goodbye at least three or four times. Much to everyone’s delight, I will be setting off this Saturday, but getting all the necessary visas (签证) for the journey has been far from quick, cheap or straightforward.
Getting a Chinese visa was easy enough. The Mongolian embassy (大使馆) seemed a bit unprepared for me, or in fact any other tourist, wanting to visit the country in winter and it took half an hour of knocking on the door before I got an answer. The Mongolian visa, however, has a map of the country in the background that should come in handy if I get lost out on the grassland.
It was getting a Russian visa that had me wondering if I’d ever be able to leave. The requirements for the visa, especially for the trip that I plan to take, were a mountain of paperwork. I was required to prove, for example, where and when I plan on staying in each city and what train I plan to catch between cities.
I’ve spent a lot of time preparing for this trip, but I still have no idea what to expect on this journey. The planning and packing has taken my mind off any worries I have so now everything is ready and I just want to get going. I’m sure I will meet some interesting people and see some wonderful sights, and the sense of the unknown makes it all the more exciting.

Like all other mothers who have small children, I, too, have to steal time—from my own children at home and from the children who know me as their teacher—just to put a few words down on paper. Many times I’ve wanted to write for myself, for other women, for my parents, for my husband, and especially for my children. I would have liked to leave a legacy (遗产) of words explaining what it has meant to have twins (双胞胎) . One reason there is not a great deal written about being a mother of a new baby is that there is seldom a moment to think of anything else but the baby’s needs.
With twins, I did not have a spare hand to write with.
Before my twins were born, my days were long and I had nothing to write about. After the twins’ birth I did have something to write about, but I found myself facing not a pen and paper but milk bottles.
Some nights, friends would visit. They would leave at 11 p.m., heading for bed, and for us the night was only just beginning. With twins, there is really no night. Each feeding lasts a long time. At 1:00 a.m., each of them would begin crying from hunger. At 4:00 a.m., when I finally put them down, I head for the kitchen and light a cigarette. I haven’t smoked in almost a year, but I feel I’ve never needed it more. I’m so sleepy and so tired that I don’t care.
Two years have passed since then and we’ve managed to live through it all. My days are still very full and even now there isn’t one evening when I put the twins down for the night that I don’t breathe a sigh of relief (松口气) . At last a little time for myself.

Good table manners are back

For a while table manners were "out". Now men and women aged 30 or so are rediscovering the finer points of being polite.
Good manners give a pleasant impression(印象). But how do you eat "properly"? The golden rule is to act silently. You should not talk to someone with your mouth full. When eating a five-course meal—a frequent event during the holiday season—guests needn' t feel frightened by the variety knives and spoons before them; you work your way towards the plate from the outside.
Uncertain situations often can be mastered with common sense. For example, many unknown salad (沙拉) greens can be difficult to tell from one another, but you can cut them all with a knife .The napkin remains subject to special care .The correct way is to fold it in half and lay it on your lap(膝上).
If you leave your place, you should always place your napkin next to the plate。After the meal is over, both cloth and paper napkins are folded and not thrown onto the plate.
The proper table manners also can serve professional advancement .If a choice has to be made among several people for an important position, the employer may choose to lunch with them .Those who make noise with their lips certainly won’t stand a chance.

Will chips one day be planted in our bodies for identification?
A US doctor has planted under his skin a computer chip(芯片)that can send personal information to a scanner(扫描仪),a technology that may someday be widely used as a way to identify(识别)people. The chip gives off information which will be scanned by a hand-held reader.
The chip is similar to that planted in more than 1 million dogs, cats and other pets in recent years to track and identify them.
The doctor decided to test the chip himself after the World Trade Center disaster(灾难). The dead could have been identified if their names and other important information had been chipped .
Officials of the company said they hope to sell the chips to patients with man-made arms or legs or other body parts. The idea is that the chip will provide immediate and correct medical information when it is needed.
The information can contain name, telephone number and other information.Or it can send out a message that ,when connected to a computer, can call up records. The scanner can read it through clothes from over a meter away .The new product also could be used to control prisoners .Workplaces of great importance may want to use the chips for employees, too. Some parents may consider planting chips in young children or elderly relatives who may be unable to say their names, addresses or telephone numbers.
Some medical and technology specialists said the product raises new questions about the relationship between humans and computer technology and could cause problems if it is used against someone’s wishes,or if your personal information is read by those who should not see it.
