Text 10
W:The last area of behavior that I want to mention today, is giftgiving. The rules of giftgiving vary quite a lot, and not knowing them can result in great embarrassment. In North America, the rules are fairly simple. If you’re invited to someone’s home for dinner, bring wine or flowers or a small item from your country.Among friends, family, and business associates, we generally don’t give gifts on other occasions except on someone’s birthday and Christmas. The Japanese, on the other hand, give gifts quite often, often to thank someone such as a teacher or a doctor for their kindness. In Japanese culture, as in many other cultures in Asia, the tradition of giftgiving is very ancient. There are many detailed rules for everything from the color of the wrapping paper to the time of the gift presentation.Middle Easterners are also generous gift givers, both in social and business situations. And while Europeans don’t generally exchange business gifts, they do follow some formal customs when visiting homes, such as bringing flowers. The type and color of flowers, however, can carry special meaning, depending on which European country we are talking about.
A
It is widely known that any English conversation begins with the weather.Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr.Johnson’s famous comment that “When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of weather.〞Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weatherspeak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.〞Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive.Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena.“The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.〞According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weatherspeak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all.English weatherspeak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other.Everyone knows conversations starting with weatherspeak are not requests for weather data.Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers〞.In other words, English weatherspeak is a means of social bonding.
21.The author mentions Dr.Johnson’s comment to show that __D__.
A.most commentators agree with Dr.Johnson
B.Dr.Johnson is famous for his weather observation
C.the comment was accurate two hundred years ago
D.English conversations usually start with the weather
22.What does the underlined word “obsession〞 most probably refer to? __B__
A.A social trend. B.An emotional state.
C.A historical concept. D.An unknown phenomenon.
23.According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes that __D__.
A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather
B.there is nothing special about the English weather
C.the English weather attracts people to the British Isles
D.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty
24.What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage? __A__
A.To explain what English weatherspeak is about.
B.To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.
C.To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.
D.To convince people that the English weather is changeable.
B
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock in London. The name was given in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in charge of the work when the bell was built in 1856.It didn’t strike until 3 years later.
The clock has become a landmark of the United Kingdom and London, particularly in the visual media(可视媒体).When a television or filmmaker wishes to quickly show a nonUK audience a certain location in Britain,a popular way to do so is to show an image of the Clock Tower.
The Clock Tower is a focus of New Year celebrations in the United Kingdom, with radio and TV stations tuning to its chimes (报时钟声) to welcome the start of the year.
Londoners who live a proper distance from the Clock Tower and Big Ben can,by means of listening to the chimes both live and on the radio or television, hear the bell strike thirteen times on New Year’s Eve.This is possible because the speed of sound is a lot slower than the speed of radio waves.
Big Ben has appeared in many films. In the 1978 version of The Thirty Nine Steps, the hero attempted to halt the clock’s progress to prevent a linked bomb blowing up by hanging from the minute hand of its western face.It was also used in the filming of Shanghai Knights starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, and was described as being partially destroyed in the 2022 film Doctor Who.An animated version (卡通版) of the clock was also used as the setting in the Walt Disney film The Great Mouse Detective, and was shown being destroyed by a UFO in the film Mars Attacks!

A.151 B.148
C.146 D.153
27.The second paragraph mainly wants to show us that Big Ben is __A__.
A.a symbol of UK and London
B.a most popular scene for filmmakers
C.a mustsee sight for tourists to London
D.a popular place to have pictures taken

28.The underlined word“halt〞in Paragraph 5 probably means __B__.
A.look into something B.get something to stop
