(Text 10)
You may like the fat, happy man who brings presents to kids on Christmas Eve. But do you know why he's called Santa Claus and why he is dressed in red? The history of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with a man called Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas lived in Myra, which is now called Turkey. He came from a rich family, but he felt sorry for poor people and decided to give them all his money. Nicholas, though, was shy and didn't want people to know he gave them money. So he climbed onto the roofs of houses on Christmas Eve and dropped bags of money down their chimneys. He wore red clothes when he did this. Nicholas died in 340 AD.第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分30分)
第一节(共12小题;每小题2分,满分24分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Bob: I think my favourite film is Skyfall, James Bond's last movie. It stars Daniel Craig again and Javier Bardem is a really evil baddie. They're both great, and so is Judi Dench as M, Bond's boss. It's a bit different to Bond's other films. The story is more important, although there is still a lot of action. It's really well filmed, especially in the scenes which are shot in Shanghai and Scotland, and it's really exciting, of course. Bond is also a bit different — although he does amazing things, he seems older and that makes him more human and the story more realistic. Oh, the song by Adele is great, too. You know it won an Oscar?
Sally: It's not a very recent film, but I love Pride and Prejudice — the version with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. The story is really clever and interesting, besides being romantic. It's all about how we tend to jump to conclusions about people and we're often completely wrong. Elizabeth thinks Mr. Darcy is stuck up and snobbish (势利的) at the beginning of the film, but at the end she realizes she has been completely wrong and he isn't like that at all. After I saw the film I read the book by Jane Austen and I really recommend that too. Although it was published 200 years ago, it's still a great book and really funny in parts.
Toby: My favourite film has to be The Matrix. Even though it was made back in 1999, it still feels really modern. It's about this ordinary man, Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, who works with computers during the day and is a hacker at night. One day he is contacted by a woman who introduces him to a very strange man: Morpheus. Morpheus explains to Neo that what he thinks of as real is actually fiction and the world is run by evil machines who have imprisoned and tricked the human race. Laurence Fishburne is terrific as Morpheus, and Keanu Reeves is excellent, but the best thing about the film is the special effects. I can watch it again and again.

D. The actors are quite good and so is the song in the film.
23. According to Sally, Pride and Prejudice is a film of ______.
A. thriller B. science
C. action D. romance

Going Zero Waste means more than dealing with the rubbish we create. It means reducing it,__too. People who go Zero Waste are careful about what they do. They never take more than they need, they reuse plastic bags, and they make good plans not to buy more than necessary before going shopping.
Kamikatsu, a Japanese village, has already gone Zero Waste. The 2,000 villagers recycle (循环利用) everything possible. There are 34 different boxes at the recycling center! The villagers sometimes just feel unhappy about what they have to do, but they also see the good side.
Let's think about how to enjoy a Zero Waste Christmas. By sending recyclable cards, we can help our friends and family reduce waste. And wouldn't it be better to enjoy the spirit of Christmas with a real tree that can be replanted in spring?
Going Zero Waste requires us to think more about what happens before and after we act. It is not always easy. But just think how good it would be, both for ourselves and for the environment, if we never had to waste anything.

B. the rubbish

Cornerball is a new sport created by Blake Austin from London, England in 2013. In general, two teams of 13 players try to pass a sphereshaped ball around in order to receive points by hitting one of two opponents' corner flags. You get points based on how you hit the flag. At the end of the game, the team with the most points is the winner. Each team has 13 players (2 corner keepers, 5 defenders, 5 attackers and a ‘captain’), totaling 26 players on a playing field at one time. The game has 4 quarters of 25 minutes, meaning each game is 100 minutes long. There are a lot of rules to consider, e.g., each player can only pass backwards, they cannot cross the halfway line, a player being held must release the ball after 5 seconds, etc. If in tournament game it is to end in a draw, golden goal will decide the winner. The rules and consequences will be explained specifically later.
Cornerball is played on a rectangular playing field. The playing field is normally grass but also works on wooden floor as well. At the 4 corners of the playing field are flags, each surrounded by a semicircle around it.It is then split into two halves by a halfway line in the middle of it.Around the sides are lines evenly(均匀地) spread across the pitch.
29. The passage is mainly about a new ______.
A. sport B. album
C. book D. product
30. According to the passage, Cornerball ______.
A. has a long history
B. is born in America
C. has a lot of rules
D. is played on a rectangular table
31. According to the passage, ______ is not needed as a necessity in a Cornerball match.
A. a sphereshaped ball
B. a wide net
C. corner flags
D. a rectangular pitch
32. The writer may continue to introduce ______ of Cornerball in the following paragraph.
A. the history
B. the number of players
C. the time length
D. the rules and consequences

第二节(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)
下面文章中有3处(第33~35题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C和D)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。
33.__________
Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send wrong signals, or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
34.__________
Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser (次要的) degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”,usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries — like the UK or France — people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. In my own culture,we express ourselves mainly through words, but people in Thailand sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
35.__________
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
A. Differences in culture
B. Trouble in meeting people
C. Importance of understanding
D. Good ways of communication
