In front of him was a big window facing the blue ocean. And a cool gentle wind was coming in from the door. Clearly, he saw and felt none of it. Back at home, I'd soon give up and hand the phone over to him after five minutes of listening to this kind of moaning. But not here. Before we left, I had told my 10-year-old son the rule—no e-mails, no Facebook, no video games, and no iPhone. We came here to get away from them all. Here we were on our first day and already, he couldn't stand it. I walked down the grass road to the beach and looked out to the sea. He collected shellfish and other sea treasures. When we got back to our little wood house, I gave my son a book, and put him on the lovely garden chair. It was almost dinner when he looked up. The next few days passed in peace. On Day 6, my son was lying beside me on the beach, watching the sun going down. He was playing with the sand. And there was something shining in his eyes. More than half of them will die out in this century and 80 to 90 percent in the next 200 years. On average, one language disappears every two weeks. According to the survey, 80 percent of the world's people speak 83 major languages, and most of the remaining 6,000 languages have never had written records. No dictionaries or books are about them and no information on them can be found in any library or on the Internet. All information is stored only in a few people's memories, so they are particularly weak. There are some reasons that cause a language to disappear. On the one hand, people who speak this language disappear. On the other hand, people who speak this language give up their mother tongue and use another language. At the same time, colonialism(殖民主义) has been the biggest destroyer over the past 200 years. With European colonists destroying, more than 150 local languages in Australia and more than 300 local languages in North America disappeared. People are forced to move from villages to cities, and their mother tongue is always under pressure by strong languages. Although many countries in eastern Africa still have local languages as the official one, European languages are also the official languages largely. The loss of languages is a global phenomenon(现象), but it actually deserves everyone's attention. The purpose of protecting national languages and saving endangered languages is to protect the different national cultures. Furthermore, it also makes sure the equal rights of the members of all racial groups. As Zhou Haizhong, a famous Chinese scholar, once pointed out that some national languages are in danger of disappearing. Relevant(相关的) departments and institutions should take active and effective measures to protect the weak national languages and rescue the endangered national languages. This is not only beneficial to the development of human civilization, but also has a great influence on national unity and social stability(社会稳定). 20.How many languages may disappear in this century according to this passage? ( ) A.Over 5,600. B.Over 6,300. C.Over 3,500. D.Over 6,000. 21.Why are the endangered languages particularly weak? ( ) A.Because we have no words to record these endangered languages. B.Because few people remember these languages. C.Because there are only a very small number of dictionaries and books about these languages. D.Because nobody can speak these endangered languages. 22.What is the main reason that caused many languages to disappear in the past 200 years? ( ) A.The people who speak the languages died. B.The people who speak these languages give up their mother tongues. C.Colonists made these languages disappear. D.The people who speak these languages use other languages. 23.Which sentence is TRUE according to this passage? ( ) A.80 percent of the world's people speak less than 80 major languages. B.Everyone should pay attention to the endangered languages and try to protect them. C.Endangered languages are useless languages.
