So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were so menus anywhere. There were eating places travelers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns(酒馆) where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”. A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups(汤). On his sign he used the word “restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore(恢复)” your health—in French the word “restore” is “restaurer”—so he called the soups “restaurants”. Soon, people started buying Boulanger's soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word “restaurant” to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often. Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid-1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire. Today cities are filled with all types of restaurants. Diners have millions of options from which to choose. 16.According to the first paragraph, what made restaurants different from earlier eating places? ( ) A.Restaurants only served food. B.Restaurants were more expensive. C.Restaurants were mainly in cities. D.Restaurants had a list of meal choices. 17.Who did Boulanger expect to come and eat at his restaurant? ( ) A.Rich people. B.Sick people. C.Travellers. D.Workers. 18.When did restaurants begin to grow internationally? ( ) A.In the 1600s. B.In the 1700s. C.In the 1800s. D.In the 1900s. 19.What is the passage mainly about? ( ) A.How restaurants developed. B.What made a good restaurant. C.Who created the first restaurant. D.Why restaurants became popular. B What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever noticed the smell? If it isn't special, the answer is likely to be no. But though a shop's scent(气味) may not be compared with sounds, it is certainly there. And it is proving to be an increasingly powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase(购买). A brand store has become famous for its special scent which floats through the quite dark hall and out to the entrance. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers' willingness to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Paris, scent is just as important to a brand's success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sale. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience. Some years ago, the focus(聚焦) for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants' disproving attitude(伪善的态度) and don't-touch-what-you-can't-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic purchase has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores(实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks(追寻) to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now a famous store uses man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit department. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store's windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent. 20.According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand stores? ( ) A.Friendly assistants. B.Special scent. C.Soft background music. D.Attractive window displays. 21.E-shops are mentioned in the passage to . ( )  A.show the advantages of bricks-and-mortar stores B.force shop assistants to change their attitude C.push stores to use sights and sounds D.introduce the rise of e-shopping 22.The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means . ( )  A.an area that exhibits goods B.a place where travelers like to stay C.a place where customers love to go D.a goal that a store expects to meet 23.The main purpose of the passage is to . ( )  A.compare and introduce B.examine and recommend C.discuss and review D.inform and explain Ⅲ. “完全正确!”give up 放弃;take up 占据;look up 查阅; put up 悬挂;张贴。 be responsible for意为“对…… be friends with意为“与…… 做朋友”;be thankful to意为“感谢,感激”;keep away from意为“避开,远离”;fall in love with意为“爱上”。 12.C 13.A 14.D 15.D Ⅱ.第一节 16.harmful 17.overcame 18.wooden 19.caring 20.transportation 21.recycling 22.congratulations 23.advantages 24.finning 25.scientific 第二节 26.leave 27.ask 28.carefully 29.cares much about 30.at once/right away 31.problem 32.us 33.helpful 34.a set of 35.gift 36.made great progress 37.Not 38.excellent 39.lucky 40.teachers 由下文“I dreamed to be a musician.” give up放弃;give out分发;give off发出(蒸汽、光等);give away泄露。 故选A。 show an interest in对…… 故选A。 根据下文 “…I had a terrible kidney disease”可推测出,“我”患上了严重的疾病。 weight
