My mom once told me that after I learned to say “Mama” and “Dada”, my third word was “no”! 36 , I used that word too often as a boy. I didn't want to eat my vegetables. I didn't want to go to bed on time. I didn't want to work in the garden. I would much rather 37 books than help my mom and grandma 38 the chores. In other words, I was a bit of a brat(顽童). Being the youngest of three sons, I probably said “no” a lot more 39 I should have.
As I 40 , I began to say “yes” a lot more. I can remember making the bed and sweeping the floor. I felt really happy to 41 my mother and father. I can remember studying hard to get good grades in school and the 42 in my parents' eyes when I got into college. I can remember learning that saying “yes” could bring 43 joy into my life than saying “no” ever did.
Even now, I am still learning how to say “ 44 ”. I still often say “no”. My only advice to you is not to wait as long as I did. Say “yes” to life. Say “yes” to love. Say “yes” to helping others and 45 this world a better place. “Yes” may only be a word, but it can change your life.

Dear Aunt Carla,
I'm having a problem with my classmate, Joan, at school. The other day I wrote an e-mail to another classmate, Beth, in which I said something about Joan that perhaps wasn't very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she sent it to Joan@, which is Joan's e-mail address! Now Joan is really angry with me and won't talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She has said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel sad, because I would never have said those things to Joan's face, but how do I get her to forgive(谅解) me? What should I do?

Dear Eric,
This problem is more common than you might think! E-mail is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don't know where your massage might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Joan. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that's up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show you're truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying, “If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.”
And good luck!
Carla

Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an after-school program to help students from poor families.
On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruits. She was surprised. One of the organizers explains that many of these students don't get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an after-meal might be the most food they would get all the day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced-price meals, and those students' family have to pay for the part of their food.
Lee was shocked, so she decided to offer help to those who are suffering from hunger. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don't have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Lee. She and a group of friends are using their program skill to create a new app called Food of Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kind-hearted strangers to donate money to lunch accounts for students in a nearby school.

MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a food additive(食品添加剂), which has been widely used by many food factories all over the world since it appeared first in Japan in 1909.
MSG is a substance that is added to some food to improve its taste and color. It is used in foods around the world such as cakes, bread, frozen meat, fish and vegetables. In the beginning, people thought MSG was safe just like salt and sugar. However, in 1968 some people reported they seemed to have bad reactions(反应) to MSG after having had a meal at a restaurant. They included headaches and quick heartbeat(心跳).It was also reported that MSG excited a person's brain and caused his death in Japan. Scientists think that MSG may lead to many neurological disorders(神经紊乱).In mouse studies done by a university, the evidence showed the mice didn't want to eat the food including MSG.
Today many food companies “hide” MSG on food labels(标签) by using different names. If you see “natural flavorings”, “hydrolyzed protein” and “spices” on a food label, you are probably seeing a hidden way to “report” MSG. Every time we have a meal in a restaurant, we always feel the food very delicious to taste, but sometimes it is dangerous for our health because some poisonous food additives have been added to the food.
To protect people's health, our governments, from central to local, are taking action to stop factories producing poisonous food additives.

Sleep plays an important role in brain development. Children should get enough sleep. Why does a child need so much sleep? A study says that because of being short of sleep, it is much harder for children to do something carefully. And also they become forgetful and easy to make mistakes. Another study shows that the right amount of night time sleep is just as important for children's development as healthy eating and taking exercise.
How many hours of sleep is enough for a child? In general, a younger child needs more sleep than an older one. Children at the age of 5—11 will need 10—12 hours of sleep a night while children at the age of more than 11 will need fewer hours.
In fact, many parents don't know how to help their children get enough sleep. Here is something you can do. For children at the age of 5—11, a 30—40 minutes' routine(常规) before sleep is helpful. It includes a bath, reading a story together and so on. In the activities, children relax and enjoy themselves a lot, and they will go to sleep more easily.
Children at the age of more than 11 may go to bed late in the evening, talking with friends online, playing games or watching TV. So they will find it difficult to get up the next morning. And even they will be tired during the day. So limit(限制) your children's use of the Internet, games and the TV before they go to bed. And don't allow them to have a computer or TV set in their bedroom.
