1.LISTENING+A Farewell Letter1)Why did the poet speaker want to sleep less and dream more?2)What would he wish to do to the old people and young children?3)What has he learnt from life as he claimed?4)What would he do if he knew that he would meet his friend for the last time?1)Why did the poet speaker want to sleep less and dream more?He believes that when one sleeps one would lose 60 seconds of light. He doesnt want to leave this world of light. He hopes to see the daylight, but he didnt want to see the world as it is either. He likes to be living in illusions,or dreams, probably in daydreaming.2)What would he wish to do to the old people and young children? He wants to tell the old people that they should continue to fall in love even though they are growing old.To the children,he wants to put wings on their bodies. However,he would leave them alone because he wants them to fly on their own.3)What has he learnt from life as he claimed? He has learnt from life that climbing is more important than being at the top of the mountains. He learnt that a child and his parents will love for ever.He learnt that equality is the very basic spirit of human beings. One can only look down on someone when he is trying to help him to get up.4)What would he do if he knew that he would meet his friend for the last time?He would embrace him/her strongly to be the guardian of their soul.He would say clearly to them“I love you”,and wouldnt assume that they would know it.Its obvious that it is impossible to say all he thinks in a poem, but it is possible for him to pick what he considers to be the most important thing for his farewell letter.Things can be valued in many ways. Some things can be measured in their face terms, such as money or property. But there are many other things that cant be valued in terms of their face value,i.e.ones feelings, attitudes, ideas and all these spiritual wealth can only be valued by the person who appreciates them. They represent different things for different people. The poet speaker is telling us the simple things in life are the most valuable. We can even be minimum clad as far as we keep our soul intact. If we forget those things in life, such as love, care, support, all such beautiful things in life,we are dead.We should be true to ourselves, unafraid of showing our true feelings, and actions.Dont assume that your love is appreciated by people without saying it.You should speak out clear and loud“I love you”.TEXT ANALYSISTEXT ANALYSISThe Two Roads by John RuskinPRE-READING TASK PRE-READING TASK 1.Looking back on your past,do you have any regrets about the important decisions you have made in your life?If you do,what are they?If you dont, ask your partner if he/she has.2.Looking into the future, what is your plan for yourself?Have you thought about it?3.Do you agree with the saying An unexamined life is not worth living?Have you examined your life?COMPREHENSIONCOMPREHENSIONWhat is meant by the title The Two Toads? What are those two roads? The two roads refer metaphorically to two choices in a persons life. One will bring happiness and success. The other leads to failure, sorrow, discomfort, and a total waste of ones life. Those who choose the second road(the wrong road)would mourn over their mistakes when they get old,but their cry of remorse would not bring back their youth.1st paragraph:A sixty-year old man meditated over his long and painful journey in life with great remorse on New Years Eve.6th paragraph:The young man was brought back to reality and realized that it was not too late for him to choose the right road.the last paragraph:The writer makes an appeal to those young people who hesitate before choosing a road in life and warns them of the consequences of failing to make well-considered decisions about their future.1)What dream did the man have on New Years night? The young man dreamt that he was over sixty years old, living in misery. His life was full of errors and remorse, his health poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful and his old years short of comforts.2)What are the two roads? And what are their differences?one road represents a meaningful life, which would hopefully lead to success and happiness. The other road represents a wasted life which would lead to a dark cave, alive with devils and deadly snakes.3)What did the young man remember about his parents? The man remembered his parents early love for him. They had taught him about life and prayed to God for his well-being.4)Why did he cry painfully? He cried painfully because both his parents and the happy days of his youth were gone.He had lost forever the chance to take the right road.5)What did the man associate the flowing lights and the falling star with?He thought that the flowing lights were the days of his wasted life and the falling star was the symbol of himself as a dying man. Both his youthful days and the prime years of his life were irrecoverably gone.6)What became of his childhood friends? His childhood friends who had begun life with him had chosen the right road and therefore made their way to success. They were honored and happy at that moment.7)What kind of a situation was the man really in?The man was actually still young. He was dreaming about his life in old age.Though he had made some mistakes,he had not entered the deep, dark cave and still had the opportunity to choose the right way.8)What message does the dream convey? The message of the dream is that one should choose the right road when on is young so as to avoid feeling remorse in old age.9)What,in your opinion,is the right road?2.LANGUAGE WORK2.LANGUAGE WORKA.CONTRASTA.CONTRASTla peaceful and sunny placelthe road to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding were close friends in primary school, but I dared not greet him because I was not sure whether he would recall our friendship after so many years. The thing that struck me was my own reaction to meeting him. From day to day I often see men who went to school with me and who have,in the common way of speaking, done well for themselves. They are now doctors, lawyers, important officials and even very successful businessmen. They are wealthy and famous figures in our city.Sometimes, they see me too and nod a greeting or turn their eyes to a shop window as the case may be.Whenever I encounter one of these people I always feel a burning shame and self-contempt,but George was different because we were special friends.I used to protect him from the bullies around our school. He notices me and our eyes met,but he soon notices the worn, old clothes I was wearing. He greeted me warm-heartedly from a distance and said quickly afterwards:“Billy, nice to see you,but I must run.”I cant understand why I replied“Yes,Sir.”READ MOREREAD MORETNMNMFTFFFTT3.GRAMMAR WORK3.GRAMMAR WORKHow to expand noun phrases?1.post-modification by+v.-ed2.post-modification by+v.-ing3.post-modification
