Text 1
W: Why didn't you go to the meeting yesterday?
M: My father was ill and I had to look after him in the hospital.
Text 2
W: The music sounds noisy.
M: I wish I could ask for my money back. The performance is really bad.
Text 3
M: Is that Mary speaking?
W: Yes, Mary speaking.
M: I'm at the counter of the hotel. I'll be back home soon. Just wait for me.
Text 4
M: It doesn't make any sense to go home for the New Year now.
W: That's right. Especially since you'll graduate in January.
M: I think so.
Text 5
M: My boss promised me a pay raise, but later he kept silent and never mentioned it at all.
W: Don't be sad. Tomorrow is another day.
Text 6
W: Why don't we buy a car, dear?
M: I have been thinking about it for a long time. I think it necessary for us to buy one. We live so far away from my company.
W: Yes. With a car, you wouldn't have to catch a bus to work. It can save a lot of time.
M: Sure, but we don't have enough money at present.
W: Why not borrow some from the bank? I think we won't have to borrow so much now.
M: Well, let's go downtown and have a look.
Text 7
M: Hello, I'd like to speak to Tom, please.
W: I'm sorry, but my brother is out. Can I take a massage for him?
M: That's very kind of you. There will be a talk on English grammar by a famous professor at two this afternoon. Tell him not to be late.
W: I certainly will. By the way, where will the talk be given?

W: Hi, Carl. What are you doing?
M: I'm reading a book.
W: What's it about?
M: It's about body language, and it's very interesting. Do you want to read it?
W: No, just tell me something about it. In my opinion, different countries have different body language, right?
M: Quite right. But most body language means the same thing in different countries. For example, putting up a hand means “May I ask a question?” A smile and a handshake show “welcome”.
W: Oh, I see. Nodding the head of course means “Yes.” Don't you think so?
M: Not quite. In some Asian countries it means “No.” not “Yes.”
W: Really? That's quite different from ours. I think it necessary for me to look through this book.
M: OK, here you are.
Text 9
M: Good afternoon, may I help you?
W: I bought one of your walkmans four days ago, but it stopped working.

W: Of course I am sure, that's the first thing I checked.
M: And why did you buy it? Was it for personal use, a gift or for work?
W: Well, I am studying French and I used it to practice my listening skills.
M: And where did you buy it?
W: From your main department store in Bedford road.
M: Did you contact the store?
W: Yes, I did, in fact the manager asked me to call you.
M: I see, I will contact the manager and tell him to replace your walkman. You can go to the store anytime after today, and they will replace it for you.
W: Thank you very much indeed. Bye.
Text 10
Aren't you glad that mothers and fathers give names to their children? Names are the quickest and easiest and the most friendly way to say who's who. Another nice thing about names is that they do not change as people do. Yesterday Mary's hair was long. Today her hair is short. But her name is still Mary. On his birthday Uncle Brown did not have a moustache. At Christmas time he did. But his name is still Brown. People are always changing, a little or a lot. But people's names remain the same.
A name sometimes says something nice about someone. Girls' names often come from words meaning “pretty” “happy” “loving” ... Boy's names are often borrowed from words which mean “strong” “brave”.Do you know how your own name came into being?
其次部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A drunk walks into a bar and says to the waiter, “Waiter, buy everyone in the house a drink, pour yourself one, and give me the bill.”
So the waiter does just that and hands the man a bill for $57. The drunk says, “I haven't got it.”
The waiter slaps the guy around a few times, then throws him out into the street.
The very next day the same drunk walks into the bar and once again says, “Waiter, buy everyone in the house a drink, pour yourself one, and give me the bill.”
The waiter looks at the guy and figures_to_himself that he can't possibly be stupid enough to play the same trick twice, so he gives him the benefit of the doubt, pours a round of drinks for the house, has a drink himself and hands the drunk a bill for $57. The drunk says, “I haven't got it.”
The waiter can't believe it. He picks the guy up, beats the living daylights out of him, then throws him out into the street.
The next day the same drunk walks back into the same bar and says, “Waiter, buy everyone in the house a drink and give me the bill.” In disgust (厌恶), the waiter says, “What? No drink for me this time?”

“The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence.” That's an old saying in English. It means that other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.
Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with Midautumn Festival. And let's not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best:its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.
It's good to enjoy other cultures and to learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It's good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn't always greener.
25.The author thinks young Chinese ________.
A. are foolish in learning our own culture
B. are ignoring our own culture

27.In the author's opinion, what is the best characteristic (特点) of Chinese culture?
A. Friendly.
B. Hardworking.
C. Brave.
D. Honest.
答案与解析 A 其次段倒数其次句话告知我们,作者最宠爱的中国文化特征是“友善”。
28.What is the best title for the passage?
A. Chinese Culture and Western Culture
B. Simple Young Chinese
C. That Grass Not Always Greener
D. Interesting Western Culture
答案与解析 C 作者想要告知我们,外国的月亮并不是更圆。

The first robots were invented in the 1920s. Robots have appeared in Hollywood films such as Robocop and The Terminator. The robots in these films are stronger, faster and more intelligent than people.
In real life, robots are mainly used in factories. They do many different jobs. Usually these jobs are too dangerous, difficult or boring for humans.
Robots also help disabled people and people who cannot look after themselves. For example, scientists are making a robot to help blind people. Nowadays many blind people have a dog to help them. This dog is called a guide dog. In the future, robot dogs might take the place of these guide dogs.
One robot guide dog is called Meldog. It has wheels. It usually “walks” in front of its owner. It is very clever. It knows the speed of its owner's walk. Meldog talks to its owner by radio. The owner wears a special belt. This belt sends instructions to the owner from Meldog such as “Stop here”, “Turn left” and “Turn right”.
In the United States, another type of robot helps disabled workers. This robot, called Kilroy, helps disabled computer operators. The robot hears the sound of its owner's voice. It follows instructions such as “Turn the page” and “Make a cup of coffee”. This robot will bring its owner tissue paper when he or she sneezes!
Robots are also used in American hospitals. They can do simple jobs. For example, they shave patients and brush their teeth and take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms. They never get lost because they have a map of the hospital in their computer memory.

30.Some disabled people need robots to ________.
A. make robots
B. become scientists
C. look after themselves
D. do dangerous jobs
答案与解析 C 依据文章举的例子可知有的机器人被用于给盲人导航,挂念残疾的电脑操作员,还有的在医院里照看病人。本题选择C项。
31.Meldog is a ________.
A. blind dog B. robot scientist
C. real dog D. robot guide dog
答案与解析 D 依据第四段第一句“One robot guide dog is called Meldog. ”一种机器导盲犬叫做Meldog。D项正确。
32. The robots used in American hospitals can do the following EXCEPT ________.
A. make a map
B. shave patients
C. brush the patients' teeth
D. take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms
答案与解析 A 依据最终一段第三句“For example, they shave patients and brush their teeth and take meals from the kitchen to the patients' rooms. ”例如,他们给病人刮胡子、刷牙和给病人把饭送到病房,没说会做地图。A项正确。
D
Of course, what is an ideal (抱负) holiday for one person may be a very unpleasant one for another. The sportsman likes a kind of holiday which his lazy friend would find worse than his daily work, while the lazy man's ideal holiday would leave the sportsman quite unsatisfied.
If I were allowed to choose my own holiday,I would have no doubts;I would go on a voyage in a modern passenger ship with a swimming bath. Even if my sportsman friend and my lazy friend came with me, they would both be happy; one would have plenty of games, swimming and dancing;the other could sit in a comfortable chair all day, looking at the sea and drinking lemonade (柠檬水) or beer. In a ship, one can do as one likes. If one day I find an interesting book in the ship's library,I can spend the whole day reading it,and nobody will stop me. Perhaps the next day I shall want some exercise. Well, then I can play games with other passengers until I am hot and sweating and ready for a bath. I can go and sleep in my cabin at any time of the day or night, I can get cheap drinks during most of the day,and I can eat as I like, choosing among a variety of foods.
But what I like even more about a sea voyage is the chance to meet new and interesting people from many countries. What
