Your brain is processing the information even if you are not aware that you are actually learning. It is a simple concept, really. A newborn can not know what anyone is saying or write down what he hears, but through repetition of the same sound, he can learn a language. Actually we all learn our first language by this listening approach. There is no one to really translate anything to us. You probably did have parents who pointed at things and would pronounce them to you, but they did not sit down to teach your grammar rules. All these are the methods often used to learn a new language at school; it is very difficult for us to accept a new way of learning. That is not to say that you should not use vocabulary word list to help you learn. You just need to supply this learning by passive listening. Thanks to the article I read by chance in the newspaper, I started to listen to English radio broadcasts every day. As first I took no notice of it, because I had no idea what was being said. But I soon realize that I could understand words, even though I could not understand everything that was being said. My ears began to “pick out” words that I recognized. I no longer picked up other programs. In six months, I have a vocabulary of about 1,000 English words. Now you can see the more exposure you have to the language you are trying to learn, the easier it is going to learn it. 21. What can we learn from the passage? A. Listening is the main way for newborns to learn a language. B. More and more students begin to do much listening practice at school. C. The writer used to listen to English programs carefully every day. D. We should know the new words ahead of time before learning a foreign language through listening. 22. How did the writer get the idea of improving his English through listening? A. he knew it from his teacher. B. He heard it from the radio. C. He got it by watching newborns learn to speak. D. He learned about it through the newspaper. 23. When the writer first listen to English programs he _________. A. could not follow the speaker. B. showed much interest in them. C. tried to pick out the words he could understand. D. found he could increase his vocabulary very quickly. 24. How did the writer get his idea across? A. with facts and theories. B. with figures and explanations C. with comparisons and personal experiences. D. with stories and arguments B Both my parents came from towns in Mexico. Then I was born in El Paso, Texas, and when I was four, my family moved to a housing project in East Los Angeles. Even though we struggled to make ends meet, my parents stressed to me and my four brothers and sisters how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities. They influenced us with the concepts of family, faith and nationalism. I got my first real job when I was ten. My dad injured his back working in a cardboard box factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little shopping mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr. Ben's Coiffure. The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m.. To pick up rubbish, Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower. Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand. It took two to three hours to clean the lot. I'd sleep in the car on the way home. I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime I acquired discipline and a strong work ethic (道德), and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life's competing interests——in my case, school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year of a high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping burgers at a fast-food joint while taking a full load of college preparation courses. The hard work paid off. I attended the US Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degrees in law and business from Harvard. Later, I joined a big Los Angeles law firm and was elected to the California State Assembly (州议会). In these jobs and in everything else I've done, I have never forgotten those nights in the parking lot. The experience taught me that there is dignity in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families that is something we should honor. 25. Before my father got injured,we _____. A. didn't like living in the USA B. rented space in a shopping mall C. had many ways to make money D. lived a poor but happy life 26. When he recovered,to make a living my father _____. A. ran a small shopping mall B. did a part-time job C. worked as a barber D. became a street cleaner 27. The author tells us in the last paragraph that we should be proud of those who _____. A. have done all kinds of jobs B. are cleaning the parking lot C. have achieved a lot in their lives D. are taking their responsibilities C The Summer Camp 2021 program mixes Chinese language teaching with a choice of culture and activities, to create a fun-packed holiday and your children will enjoy it. Professor Pan! We’re friends.” “I’d rather pay.” I replied. “If it’s free I can’t afford it!” Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “We’re friends now!” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish I’d have just paid the 30 Yuan. I owed (欠) them in the first place! According to the American “There’s no free lunch”, there’s a price for everything, and I’m always looking around to figure out what this means. Many of our neighbors have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix!” he insists. I mentioned to a peasant friend that I wished I had a stone mill(磨) to grind flour for bread. A month later he showed up with a beautiful mill that he’d had his uncle in the countryside carve from a solid block of granite(花岗岩). Chinese generosity is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements(纠缠) and just hand over the money. But cash can’t compensate (补偿) for the greatest gift — friendship. When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo chairs under the trees, drinking tea, he said, “They must have nothing better to do.” “Actually,” I said, “they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably you’re right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do. And neither do I!” And I joined the group. We talked about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now they’re taller than you. How time flies!” How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know. They cannot keep. They freely give off their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, “No charge. We’re friends!” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English. I’ll make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there’s still no free lunch. 31. Why did the author insist paying the repairman when he was offered free repairs? A. Because he was an honest man. B. Because he didn’t know the repairman. C. Because he thought it natural to pay for other’s service. D. Because he didn’t want to help others. 32. The underlined word “figure out” in Paragraph 3 probably means . A. calculate B. admire C. mix D. understand 33. Generally, the author thinks that . A. Chinese are generous and always ready to help their friends B. Chinese are good at exchange of equal values C. Chinese are free enough to drink tea and chat with their friends D. Chinese are helpful but don’t treasure time 34. The best title of the article should be . A. Still no free lunch B. A good lesson from the Chinese C. True help or not D. Learn to give 35. Which of the following is True? A. Chinese seldom refuse payment for professional services. B. When a peasant knew the author needed a mill, he made one for the author himself. C. The author thinks that Chinese are wise enough to enjoy their life. D. Finally, the author didn’t change his mind about what the Chinese do. 其次节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every one of us has only and exactly 24 hours a day — and no one is an exception. Some people are constantly pushed for time. This article is about how we can learn to manage our valuable time more effectively. In reality we cannot manage time. We can only manage ourselves and our relationship with time. 36   And habits are not that easy to change. Below here are tips that can help you manage your time better.      Organize your goals. Organize your goals based on two standards: degree of urgency(紧急) and importance: a. Should be done today, tomorrow, etc. b. Should be done at "that date". c. Can be put off for so many days. d. Can ask someone else to do it.  37 .      Clean up your list. Make a list of everything you think that is not helping or benefiting you and do not do them!      Focus on one goal. Concentrate only on one goal at a time. Otherwise, if while dealing with something you think about everything you can do later, most likely you will get bored and disappointed.  38 The boredom(厌倦) is guaranteed with this way of thinking.
