People travel for a lot of reasons. Some travelers go to see battlefields or religious shrines. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their photos taken in front of famous places. But most Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. Residents of cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short and much of the rest of the year is in the rain. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean (地中海) resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun.
The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italy's 30,000 hotels are booked every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French Beaches, parks, and roadsides. Spain's long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.
But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, it's getting worse. The French can't figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St. Tropez. And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.
None of this, however, is damaging anyone's fun. The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they don't go there for clean water. They stand traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don't even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it's still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or else.
21. It can be inferred from the passage that Europeans travel mostly for the reason that ______.
A. they want to see battlefields or religious shrines.
B. they are interested in different cultures.
C. they would like to take pictures in front of famous sites.
D. they wish to escape from the cold, dark and rainy days back at home.
22. In Para.1, cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam are mentioned to show that ______.
A. they are not good cities in climate.
B. how rich their residents are.
C. these cities lack places of historic interest and tourist spots.
D. they have got more tourism than they can handle.
23. According to the passage, which of the following countries attracts more tourists than the others?
A. Italy B. Spain C. France D. Greece
24. The sentence "one tourist for every person living in Spain" (Para.2 ) means ____.
A. every year the number of tourists is equal to the number of people living in Spain.
B. all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists.
C. every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist.
D. every Spanish is visited by a tourist every year.
25. Which of the following will damage the tourists' fun at Mediterranean resorts and beaches?
A. Polluted water. B. Crowded buses.
C. Traffic jams. D. Rainy weather

There are stories about two U.S . presidents,Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK.We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting.
The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact,he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson,he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said.If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct”on it.The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell. So what he really wrote was “ol korekt”.After a while,he shortened that term to “OK”.
The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born,Kinderhook,New York.Van Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President .They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”.
26. The author __________.
A. believes both of the stories

A. was the short way to say “old Kinderhook Club”
B. meant the place where President Van Buren was born
C. was the name of Van Buren’s club
D. was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election
30. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. the stories of the letters “ok”
B. the story of the president election
C. the story of American presidents
D. the history of the letters “ok”

When Mrs. Joseph Groeger died recently in Vienna,Austria, people asked the obvious question,“Why did she live to be 107?” .Answers were provided by a survey conducted among 148 Viennese men and women who had reached the age of 100.Somewhat surprising was the fact that the majority had lived most of their lives in cities. In spite of the city’s image as an unhealthy place, city living often provides benefits that country living can lack. One factor seems to be important to the longevity(长寿)of those interviewed.
This factor is exercise. In the cities it is often faster to walk short distances than to wait for a bus.Even taking public transportation often requires some walking.Smaller apartment houses have no elevators(电梯),and so people must climb stairs.City people can usually walk to local supermarkets. Since parking spaces are hard to find, there is often no alternative /choice but to walk.
On the other hand, those who live in the country and suburbs do not have to walk every day.In fact, the opposite is often true.To go to school, work,or almost anywhere else, they must ride in cars.
31. The Vienna survey may help to explain _____.
A. the complaints of people in apartment houses
B. the cause of Mrs. Groeger’s death
C. the longevity of people like Mrs. Groeger
D. the image of cities in general
32. The purpose of the second paragraph is to list some _____.
A. benefits of walking
B. occasions for walking in city life
C. comments(评论) made by city people
D. problems of city living
33. To reach the third floor of a building, it would probably be most healthful _____.
A. to take the elevator
B. to walk up the stairs
C. to ride in a car
D. to find an alternative besides walking
34. People who live in the country probably do more driving than walking because ________
A. it is more convenient for them in this way
B. they don’t need the exercise
C. they never have parking problems
D. they can’t afford to take the bus
35. A conclusion that can be drawn from this passage is that__________.
A. air pollution is not serious
B. anyone can live to be 107
C. country people should move to the city
D. walking is a healthful exercise
其次节 七选五:依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中 有两项为多余选项。(共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)
Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. _ 36
First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible.
_37_ The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealM. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station. Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (受阻)by limited understanding. __38__
Here is some of the advice I give my students:
●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
●Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.
● Do not translate everything into your native language.
● _39_ Don't concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.
● Listen to something you enjoy.
I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn't understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 40 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn't pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.
A. But you can't follow a native English speaker at all!
B. What should you do?
C. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!
D. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany.
E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.
F. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.
G. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.
