The Western has been the favorite type for American adventure story since the nineteenth century. While the American West was being settled, newspapers and "dime novels" could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed wilderness to sell. The public back East was eager to read about the West, even if the stories were more fiction than fact.
In 1902, Owen Wister published his novel The Virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the Western as a serious literary form; the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series. In 1905, Bertha H. Bower and Zane Grey published their first novels, and the popular Western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by Luke Short, Max Brand, and Louis L’ Amour carrying on the tradition.
The first Western movie appeared even earlier than these serious Western novels. Before the turn of the century, an associate of Edison’s had filmed Cripple Creek Barroom Scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera. In 1903 the Edison’ company filmed the first "full-length" Western — The Great Train Robbery. The film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told its entirety. In the movie, bandits (强盗) rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse. Audiences loved the movie. Some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing The Great Train Robbery and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies. The film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the Edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of The Great Train Robbery. Ironically, in" an era when the West was still very real —-Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903 — The Great Train Robbery was filmed in New Jersey.

3. C 推断题。第一段最终一句的was eager to read about the West(渴望看一些有关西部的书),与题中were fascinated by the wild West (对荒芜的西部着了迷)表达了同样的信息,故C项为正确答案。
4. C 词义题。依据上下文关系以及关键词语novels和form可推知literary的词义。由于“小说”与“形式”应属于“文学”范围。

Eating 40 percent less food could extend a person's life by 20 years, according to scientists.
Researchers at the Institute of Health Ageing at University College London are developing a treatment that they hope will fight the “disease” of getting older.
They are looking into how genetics (遗传学)and lifestyle can affect ageing and add years, possibly decades, to a person's life.
Age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and neuro degeneration can also be treated, it is claimed.
They want to find out how the life of a rat can be increased by up to 30 percent simply by reducing its food intake.
Researcher Dr. Piper told the Independent: "If you reduce the diet of a rat by 40 percent it will live for 20 or 30 percent longer. So we would be talking 20 years of human life. This has shown on all sorts of animals, even Labradors (a kind of dog)." The scientists are also studying fruit flies, which share 60 percent of human genes and age in a similar manner, and mice.
They have already made the healthy lifespan (寿命)longer in both flies and mice by using drug treatments and a balanced diet. It is hoped that this combination will also work to extend (延长)human life. Dr. Piper said: "If we discover the genes involved with ageing, we should be able to delay ageing itself. This is what we've found."
He added that the field of research into extending life is only a decade old, so remains "in theory". It is their special approach to treating all age-related diseases caused by the "disease" of ageing itself that sets their research apart.

D. show how similar mice and humans are to each other

A. Exercise regularly.
B. Reduce their diet properly.

Many skilled young people are being forced into part-time and unskilled work, the report says. It warns of a "crisis" with more than six million people so disillusioned they have given up looking for work. The ILO(International Labor Organization)wants governments to make job creation a priority. It wants more training schemes, and also tax breaks for employers.
"The youth unemployment crisis can be beaten but only if job creation for young people becomes a key priority in policymaking and private sector investment picks up significantly," said Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, executive director of the ILO's employment sector.
Since 2007, the number of young people without jobs has risen by four million - up from less than 12%, the Global Employment Trends for Youth Report says. Almost 13% of people aged between 15 and 24 - or almost 75 million - have no work, although this is slightly down on its peak in 2009.
In the European Union, one in five young people are looking for work, the report claims. Some 27.9% of youths were unemployed in North Africa last year —a rise of five percentage points on 2010. In the Middle East, the figure stood at 26.5% in the report's regional breakdown. Even in East Asia, perhaps the most economically active region, the unemployment rate was 2.8 times higher for young people than for adults, the report said.
But, the ILO report reveals, the true picture of youth unemployment is even more pessimistic. Many young people are extending their time in higher education because they cannot find jobs. Others are taking part-time unskilled work because they cannot find work in the fields they trained for.
The ILO says that more than six million young people worldwide have given up looking for work and are becomingly increasingly detached from society. By not using their skills they are losing them, the report says, and if there is no improvement in the jobs market soon, they may be not only unemployed, but unemployable.
The ILO suggests offering tax breaks to businesses hiring young people and offering more programmes to help kick-start careers.
63. Which of the following is true according to Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs?
A. Since 2007, the number of young people out of job has risen to 4 million.
B. Nearly 13% of the young people have no work.
C. Job creation should be made a key priority in policymaking.
D. The youth unemployment rate can never go down.
64. The various figures in paragraph 3 and 4 were used to show_________.
A. The employment situation is serious only in the European Union
B. The global youth employment situation is depressing
C. East Asia enjoys a high youth employment rate
D. Compared with the situation in 2009, the youth employment in 2007 is slightly better
65. According to ILO, the following are caused by high youth unemployment rate except__________.
A. The government calls on young people to take up whatever job is available
B. Many young people are making their time in higher education longer
C. Some young people are taking part-time unskilled work
D. Many young people have given up looking for work
66. The ILO offered many solutions to the crisis of youth unemployment, including___________.
a. making job creations a priority b. more training schemes
c. encouraging public investment d. tax breaks for employers
e. offering more entrepreneurship programmes to help start careers
A. a b c e B. b c d e C. a c d e D. a b d e
