M: It's only 100 dollars full fare for you and half fare for your daughter if she is under 11. Text 2 W: Movies and restaurants are fun places to go on Friday and Saturday nights. M: That's pretty expensive. I usually like to go to a bar with my friends to have a drink or listen to some good music, and sometimes we dance. Text 3 W: Mike,I'm really shocked. I never thought I'd receive a “C” for my report. What about you? M: I got a “B” . If you'd turned in the report a week ago as scheduled, you would have received a grade higher. Text 4 W: Well, it seems that Frank Pierre has become quite a famous painter. M: Has he? You know I'm a professional artist myself and I question how much gift Pierre really has. Text 5 M: I hope I'm not late, Miss Smith. I have an appointment for 11 o'clock. Professor Rogers asked me to come. W: Sorry. Professor Rogers had to go out this morning, and he asked me to see you. Text 6 W: Good morning, sir. You look worried. What is wrong with you? M: I can't find my daughter. She is only six years old. W: In that case, you should ask the police for help. Is she in a red cap and white trousers? M: Oh, yes. Where is she? W: Now, she is at the police station. Follow me, please. M: Oh, my god. Thanks a lot. Text 7 W: What's the weather like today? M: It has stopped snowing, but there is a bitter cold wind. W: Look at the ice there hanging from the houses. M: And the streets are covered with ice. W: Do you happen to know what the temperature is today? M: I missed today's weather forecast over the radio. W: It feels like 15 degrees below zero at least. I don't mind the cold weather, but I do hate it when it gets slippery. M: The ice will soon be thick enough for skating. I'm so fond of the winter sports. Text 8 M: What would you like to do tonight? W: Watch TV, as usual. M: Shall we watch the Screen TV Guide first? I think we should know what's on first. W: OK. There's a western film on at nine on Channel 2. Do you mind if we watch it? I'd really like to see it. M: Well,I really want to see the baseball game on Channel 6. W: Then I do hope they would be on at different time. M: Don't worry. Let's see if there's something more exciting. W: Oh, there is an American film on Channel 8, shown for the first time! The press has given it very good review! Shall we watch this together? M: But I want to see the baseball game. W: OK, it's up to you, then. But let's watch the news before it. I do wish we had another TV set. Text 9 W: I heard you had spent so much time and money in collecting stamps. M: No,not so much, only in my spare time with fifty yuan on it a month. W: When did you begin collecting stamps? M: When I was six years old. W: Oh,you must have a big collection by now. M: Yes, besides those coming from my father, I have fifty albums of stamps. W: 50! Great! M: Yes, but not a millionaire of money, but of spirit, from it I've learned a lot, seen many beautiful places and made a lot of friends and so on and so forth. W: What you've said makes me want to have a try. Is it too late for me to collect stamps now? M: No, not at all. “The latecomers surpass the old-times.” Have you ever heard the saying? W: I do hope that's true. Text 10 W: Hello, everybody. My name is Lucy Green, and I stand before all of you today in the hope that you will choose me to be your president. There are several reasons why I think I am fit for the position of president of the Students' Union. First of all, I have been given many leadership roles before, such as captain of the girls' volleyball team, editor of the school magazine, and secretary of the environmental club. So I know how to get along with different students and members. Secondly,I am a good listener. I am willing to listen to any problems and complaints, and then do what I can to solve them. Thirdly, if I am elected president, I am willing to give up all my other activities so that I can focus on my duties as president. I have been in the environmental club for three years now,but I am willing to give up the club if I get elected. In other words, I will put my heart into my duties if I am elected president, and I will not make you disappointed. Think wisely on the day of elections and vote for me. You will not regret it. A Last year, around Labor Day, I read a “Happy Ad” in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line(给她写信), here was her address. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday. A week or so later, someone knocked at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself as the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for sending such a nice card to his mom. Apparently, like many older folks, she did not receive much mail and was quite excited to receive mine. I just didn't know what to say. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday. That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, except to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a Valentine and also a couple of notes in between. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mail. She passed away a couple of months ago. I never met this lady, but I did keep her and her family in my thoughts. I dropped them a line of sympathy. I hope that my few little notes were enough to brighten a couple of her days here on earth. 21.The old lady's address was given because ________. His left side was useless. He'd been a police officer before, and he could do strong and able. Now, he felt he could do nothing. His trouble started with Parkinson's disease, but it didn't end there. In July, 2002, the 60yearold Kraus went into the hospital for an operation, on his brain to control the shaking. But he had a stroke(中风). He was paralyzed. The doctors said,“You may never walk again and you might not even be able to talk.” Kraus found that he couldn't lift a fork or take a drink by himself. Physical treatment was so painful and slow. What did he have to live for? So Kraus held the gun against his head. Feeling the cold metal on his skin, he began to consider the pain he would cause for his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He didn't pull the trigger(扳机). Andrew Garud, his exercise physiologist(生理学家), told him,“You are where you are. The pace would be slow; the pain would be real. But as long as you are alive, you have the ability to get better.” After three months of working with Garud, Kraus wanted to see if he could stand. He could. Then he took three steps, sat down and cried like a baby. One step, as they say, led to another. Next he managed a short walk along the edge of a boxing ring(拳击台) in the health club. It was the hardest fight of Kraus's life. People at the gym cheered him on. Garud kept saying he could do more. Now, Kraus can brush his teeth, shave himself, and get around the house with a walker. Only the paralyzed can fully understand little triumphs. 24.According to the fourth paragraph, what did Andrew Garud mean? A.Everyone in the world has the right to be alive. B.It' s necessary for people to do exercise to keep healthy. C.One should try to lead a better life. D.As long as a person is alive, he will have a chance to be better. 25.What does the underlined word“triumphs”in the last paragraph mean? A.Difficulties. B.Successes. C.Disappointments. D.Reputations. 26.What personality does Kraus probably have? A.Optimism. B.Strongmindedness. C.Sympathy. D.Generosity. 27.According to the passage, we can learn that ________. A.the stroke during the operation on his brain led to Kraus' paralysis B.Kraus' operation in 2002 was performed by Andrew Garud C.doing exercises can help cure Parkinson's disease D.Kraus will lead a normal'life as a healthy person in the future A C Hello, everybody.
