Upper West Side widow Mimi Scott has been handed a heartbreaking ultimatum--lose three of her four dogs by tomorrow or get out of her plush Lincoln Park apartment.
For the 64--year—old dog lover, there’s only one choice.
“I have created a family, and getting rid of them would be like losing nay children,”she said yesterday.“I’m beside myself. It’s destroying me。I’ve been crying so much.”
“When you live on your own you get such a close bond to your pets,”she added.“It’s them that I wake up for and I'd rather sell my home than live without them.”
Scott,an artistic director of the Manhattan Playwrights, has lived in her $1.25 million apartment on W.71 st St.for nine years.
She bought her Havanese pup,Lucy, and her Bolognese dogs,Coconut and Laura, last July to keep her 9-year-old Lhasa apso,Kramer, company.
But last month she was told of a strict building bylaw that bans residents from keeping more than one dog.The other three pooches had to go.
“I knew nothing of the bylaw, which I knew was my mistake,”said Scott, who sits on the coop board.“But they should have told me in July before I’d built such a bond.Letting these dogs go now would break my heart.”
Scott believed she enjoyed and was proud of living in the apartment and the building.“But I feel betrayed(被背叛了),”she said.
“What choice do I have? I've started looking for a new place, and just hope the board will let my dogs stay until I move.”
Scott said she had not been a part of any board meetings discussing her dogs, which she believes were held after one of her neighbors complained.
She was told by the building manager,Justine Lapi,of the board’s decision in February.
She got the ultimatum on Monday, telling her she faces a $ 500 fine if the dogs remain after tomorrow and an additional $ 25 fine for each day after that.
“I don’t make the rules,I just do what I’m told,”she said.
