The week after Jane's birthday, Barbara and Mary were away. Jane decided to have a late birthday party. She telephoned several friends. She asked some to bring records, some to bring food and others to bring something to drink. She rang another friend to see if she could borrow his record player. She herself bought some food and drink to get the party going. She took up all the carpets (地毯) so that they could dance. She did not know whether Barbara and Mary would have approved (赞成), but as long as she was careful, she was sure that they would not mind. She warned the two people in the flat above and invited
them down.
The first guests arrived soon after eight. The music was soon playing loudly and they started dancing. Some of Jane's friends brought other friends with them. As more and more people arrived, the noise increased. People started shouting at each other, so they turned the music up. This made it more difficult to hear each other above the music, so they shouted more loudly. At half past ten the bell rang. “Turn down the music!” someone shouted. “Someone probably called the police.” When Jane opened the door, there was a policeman standing there. She started to apologize, “I'm sorry about all the noise, officer. But you see, it was my birthday last week and I'm having a party.” “Never mind about that, miss. We're here because of something much more important.”
“Oh,” said Jane, surprised. “What's all this about?”

People have sailed (航行) the world in quite small boats. It is not an easy thing to do. Sometimes the weather gets bad. That can be the end of everyone in it. Accidents can happen easily and quickly. One family once had an accident with some big fish. The fish swam under their boat and bit (咬) holes in it. Sea water came in, of course, and the boat soon sank. However, these people had another smaller boat—a lifeboat; and they all went into that boat. They lived and hoped for many days. They ate and slept, and they always hoped…At last a ship found them.
How do people live in a very small lifeboat? Perhaps for weeks or months? They must be very strong in every way. They must have hope—they must want to live. But you can't eat and drink hope. You can't drink sea water. Drink a lot of sea water and you will quickly die. Sailors can drink rain water. They must catch rain water in their boat. They must also catch fish and birds for food. Lifeboats don't often carry a cooker, so the sailors can't cook their food. Raw (生的) fish and bird-meat is not very nice. But there is no other choice (选择) in a lifeboat! The sailors must eat raw food, or they will die.
What do people think about in a lifeboat? They think about land, a warm bed, dry clothes, fresh water and food.
