Humans are social animals. They live in groups all over the world. As these groups of people live apart from other groups, over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas, which form different cultures. One important particular side of every culture is how its people deal with time.
Time is not very y important in non-industrial societies. The Nuer people of east Africa, for example, do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time. The daily lives of the people of such non-industrial societies are likely to be patterned around their physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule based on the clock. They cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down. They plant crops during the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a clock or calendar, but by saying that an event takes place before of after some other events. Frequently such a society measures days in terms of “sleeps” or longer periods in terms of “moons”. Some cultures, such as the Eskimos of Greenland measure seasons according to the migration(迁徙)of certain animals.
Some cultures which do not have a written language to keep written records have developed interesting ways of “telling time”. For example, when several Australian aborigines(土著人)want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way. When this happens the people see that the agreed-upon time has arrived and the event can take place.
59. By saying “Humans are social animals” the author means______.
A. they live like animals in the society.
B. they are different from other animals.
C. they live in groups, considered as a whole
D. they are divided into many groups
60. In on-industrial societies, time is not very important because those people don’t_____
A. have the word TIME in their languages
B. get used to using clocks
C. know how to measure time
D. need to plan their daily life around an exact time schedule
61. The Australian aborigines’ way of “telling time” is based on ______.
A. the change of the sun rays
B. the movement of the earth
C. the position of the stone
D. the position of the tree or the cliff
62. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?
A. Time and Culture B. The Measurement of Time

April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the United States and brought to Britain in 1994. Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. On that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their work places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls’ horizons(视野)and raise their self-confidence.
For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society. But actually, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive(主管),” says the chairman of the Our Sons and Daughters Charitable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of the Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of work.” Schools and many companies support the activity
