Before a new type of airplane goes in to service, every part of it is testes again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.
The first is called the “tank test”. A modern airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air. The air presses against the skin of the plane. The pressure on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, it is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. Then the pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.
The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must fine out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again.
These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.
56. By doing the “tank test”, the engineers can find out ______.
A. the amount of air in the plane B. the strength of the plane structure
C. the pressure inside and outside the plane D. the power of the airplane engines
57. What will happen to the plane under the “tank test”?
A. It will be broken. B. It will be made stronger.
C. It will be filled with water. D. It will be tested by pilots.
58. According to the test, why are test flights most dangerous?
A. The plane may explode in the air. B. The pilot may lose control of the plane.
C. The engines may be damaged. D. Too much air may get into the plane.
59. What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Two important tests on airplanes. B. The importance of flying safely.
C. The danger of testing airplanes. D. How airplanes are made and tested.

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep up shouting or whistling. Always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches. Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass.
When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place.
60. Which signal is a call for help?
A. shouting here and there B. whistling every where in the forest
C. shouting or whistling three times together D. crying twice
61. When you hear two shouts or two whistles, you know that ________.
A. someone is afraid of an animal B. people will come to help you
C. someone needs help D. something terrible will happen
62. What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence?
A. Leave branches to find your way back
B. Pick off branches to build another house
C. Use branches to make a bed
D. Drop branches to look for water
63. The main idea of the passage is _________.
A. how to travel in the forest
B. how to spend the night in the forest
C. what you should do if you want to get some water
D. what you should do if you are lost in the forest.
C
I'm beginning to think whether my grandmother was right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-behaviored as they used to be. She recounts in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters(上司). She was taught to speak when she was spoken to and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say "please" and "thank you". Children in her days, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind her manners.
If you give her the chance she then takes out of her writing desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as strict looking as that, you too would have been "seen and not heard". Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her; Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were so heavy to a little girl that she hadn't enough breath left to be talkative, let alone naughty. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age.
However, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother. I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief(恶作剧). I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing tight,
