I can't count the times I called my sister and said,“How about going to lunch in half an hour?” She would gasp and stammer(结结巴巴地说),“I can't.I have clothes on the line.My hair is dirty.I wish I had known yesterday.I had a late breakfast. It looks rainy.” And my personal favorite response:“It's_just_Monday.” She died a few years ago.We never did have lunch together. From then on,I've tried to be a little more flexible. Life has a way of going faster as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises made to ourselves gets longer. One morning,we awake, and all we have to show for our lives is repetition of “ I'm going to” ,“ I plan on” and “Someday, when things are settled down a bit”. When anyone calls my “seize the moment” friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord. My lips have not touched ice cream for 10 years.I love ice cream. The other day,I stopped the car and bought a triple decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home,I would have died happily. Now go on and have a nice day.Do something you WANT to,not something on your SHOULD DO list. 21.The example of the writer's sister serves as________. A.an argument B.an introduction C.a support D.a conclusion 22.The writer thinks that the underlined excuse “It's just Monday.”is acceptable,because________. A.it is still likely that they can have lunch together some time later B.it sounds most reasonable of all the excuses C.it shows respect for the writer's suggestion D.it indicates the time when they can have lunch together 23.The underlined word “contagious” in the fourth paragraph means“________”. A.appropriate B.influential C.practical D.evident 24.What is the purpose of the writer by writing this passage? A.To suggest how time flies. B.To persuade people to have lunch with relatives as much as possible. C.To advise people to keep their promise. D.To convince readers to be flexible on their schedule for practical joy. B BEIJING—Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed the need to promote the country's housing security and supply to guarantee people's basic residential needs. On Tuesday,Xi said that pushing the construction of the housing supply system was a solid project that benefits all people. “Solving the housing issue is a longterm task,” the president said,“China still faces problems such as insufficient affordable housing and imbalances in housing resources distribution.” Xi said future work would stick to marketoriented reform and properly handle the roles of government and the market, economic and social functions of housing development, relations of necessity and possibility and the difference between housing security and welfare trap. Meanwhile,he vowed (立誓) the government shall meet the basic housing needs of the group troubled by inadaptable labor skills, lack of job opportunities or low income. Xi pointed out that the general scheme of building China's housing supply system was that the government realized most of the basic needs while leaving other diversified demands for the market rules. “China will spare no effort to increase housing supply while pursuing affordable, environmentally friendly and safe living standards in accordance with the country's practical situation,” he said. According to the country's 12th FiveYear Plan,China will increase its quantity of affordable housing so that it covers 20 percent of all residential areas by 2015 through construction of 36 million affordable housing units, including renovation(修复) of rundown neighborhoods. Xi said the government would first ensure the quality and safety of these buildings and strive to accomplish the goal while speeding up the construction of public rental and lowrent housing as well as the renovation of rundown neighborhoods. Land and financial policies would be further improved to support the project,Xi said, adding the government would explore and encourage ways for nonprofit institutions to participate in the construction and management of affordable housing. The top leader also stressed that China shall strengthen supervision, establish standard management system and punish illegal occupation of affordable housing units. 25.The housing supply system is constructed to________. A.guarantee people's basic residential needs B.handle the roles of government and housing market C.improve land and financial policies D.punish illegal occupation of affordable housing units 26.As for solving China's housing problems,President Xi is ________. A.mysterious B.pessimistic C.determined D.uncertain 27.Building China's housing supply system will________. A.improve people's lives B.cover all residential needs by 2015 C.especially benefit lowincome people D.totally satisfy the demands of the market 28.What would be the best title for this passage? A.Establish China's Housing Policies B.Better China's Housing Security and Supply System C.Balance the Functions of Government and Market Rules D.Strengthen Housing Supervision and Management C In this day and age when we tend to throw away toys that are even slightly worn,it is tough to believe that there is a “hospital” where dolls as well as all kinds of beloved stuffed animals can be repaired and brought back to their original glory. What is even more amazing is that such a place has existed for a century and is still going strong.Welcome to Sydney's “Original Doll Hospital” that celebrated its 100th birthday,on February 22nd,2013. The unique business came into being rather accidentally. In 1913,a general store owner in Sydney began importing Japanese dolls. However, the rubber bands that held them together would often break on the boat journey. Luckily for him,his brother Harold Chapman Sr.was a good handyman and set aside a little “hospital” area in the store,to repair the delicate toys. In 1930,Chapman's son also named Harold, relocated the doll hospital and expanded the business even further,by agreeing to repair anything that could be fixed—no matter how big or small. While business was robust(稳固的),the real boom came in 1938 during World War Ⅱ.Faced with extreme restrictions, new dolls and toys became rare, and young girls and boys had no choice but to get their existing ones, lovingly repaired—by one of the 70 “doctors” on the staff. While it does not have as many employees today, the hospital that is run by his son Geoff Chapman now sits in a good location with a beautiful store—one that features everything a little girl could possibly wish for—from new to used,to even extremely rare and valuable dolls. Though it may not appear to be,the doctors say their jobs are very interesting, given that no two dolls are the same or need the same repairs and that just like medical doctors, they have no idea what challenge they will have to face, when they come to work each day.The one advantage is that there are no emergency night calls to worry about! 29.What do we know about the doll hospital now? A.It is not as good as it used to be. B.It is still developing quickly. C.It runs in debt. D.It faces many challenges. 30.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us? A.How the doll hospital came into being. B.Harold was a handy man. C.Dolls from Japan were not of high quality. D.The good luck of a general store owner. 31.According to the last paragraph ,doctors in the doll hospital ________. A.enjoy their job very much B.face few challenges because the work is simple C.are better paid than medical doctors D.enjoy just one advantage 32.Which of the following can describe the doctors' work in the last paragraph? A.Simple. B.Boring. C.Worthless. D.Challenging. D Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can't you be bothered to do? A study of how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy that they'd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs. Just over 2,000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health,Britain's largest health charity. The results were astonishing. About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up. More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus.Worryingly,of the 654 respondents with children,64% said they were often too tired to play with them. This led the report to conclude that it's no wonder that one in six children in the UK is classified as obese (very fat) before they start school. Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said,“People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets, too.” “If we don't start to take control of this problem, the whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary tasks.” And Scotland's largest city,Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK,with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67 %. The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesityrelated illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and cost billions of pounds every year. 33.What can be inferred from the passage? A.British people are too lazy to do anything. B.Internet shopping will do harm to your health. C.Many people would not run to catch a bus in Britain. D.People should be more active and take regular exercise to keep fit. 34.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.One sixth of British people use the remote control when watching TV. B.People will benefit not only themselves but their families by getting fit. C.Fatness can cause diseases such as heart disease and cancer. D.More people get obesityrelated illnesses now than 40 years ago. 35.What does the underlined word “rudimentary” (in the eighth paragraph) most probably mean? A.Basic. B.Serious. C.Vital. D.Hard. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Long ago, people believed that in the future we would work less, have more free time and get more relaxed.__36__ Today we work harder, work longer hours and have more stresses than ten years ago.We walk faster, talk faster and sleep less than previous generations. And although we use machines that save us time,we have less free time than our parents and grandparents.__37__An American journalist James Gleick in a new book, says that people are suffering from “hurry sickness”-we're trying to do more things in less time.A
