Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy, who decided to study judo (柔道) despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move. “Sir,” the boy finally said. “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the master replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.
Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament (联赛). Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent(对手) became impatient and charged; the boy deftly (敏捷地) defended and used his one move to win the match. The boy became the champion at last.
On the way home, the boy and his master reviewed every move in every match. Then the boy gathered the courage to ask what was really in his mind, “How did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for two reasons,” the master answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult moves in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grasp your left arm.”
The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.
54. What does the underlined word “charged” mean in the passage?
A. claimed. B. attacked C. rushed. D. hit.
55. Why could the boy win the tournament with only one move?
A. Because he had almost mastered one of the most difficult moves.
B. Because his right arm was quite strong.
C. Because his opponents were impatient.
D. Because he was brave and deft.
56. The best title for the passage might be ______.
A. A boy without left arm B. A good Judo master
C. Judo tournament D. Weakness or Strength
D
Today just as technology changes the face of industry, farms have undergone(经历)an“agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.
One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forwardlooking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the oldtime farms depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.
