To extinguish ( 熄灭 )different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invented. They must be ready for immediate use when fires break out. Most portable (手提式的 ) kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers.
Since fuel(燃料), oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed(移走)or reduced to extinguish a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is the most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get.
Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen. This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used to cover a small fire.
A third method is called separation, which includes removing the fuel or material easy to burn from a fire, so that it can find no fuel.
The method that is used to put out a fire depends on the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes. Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires. These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by cooling with water.
25. If a fire breaks out on a bus, which of the following should be ready there for you to use?
A. Sand. B. Water. C. An extinguisher. D. A blanket.

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

A. Go shopping. B. Find a house.

36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here are some suggestions.
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. 37 First, plan your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for study. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertain-
ment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. 38 When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. 39 They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. There are other methods that might help you with your studies.
B. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.
C. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject
D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
E. Maybe you are an ordinary student.
F. Make full use of class time to do your own homework.
G. No games, radios, or television.
