I listen to English songs and watching English movies, as I think using different media for study are a good idea. But my parents are strongly opposed this learning method. I think that the language in some English movie and songs is unconventional. It might harm my efforts to learn to speak proper. They believe that it is not a efficient use of my time and that because I should mainly learn from textbook. So, I’m confusing about the way I lean English. I wonder whether I should follow my parents’ advice and stick to my own ideas. 参考答案: Recently, my parents and I have been unable to agree on the best English learning method. He had never owned a radio or television nor had he travelled further than forty kilometres from his birthplace. His knowledge of the world was gained only from his brief trips to the village to sell his sheep and buy food. However, he had lately come to rely on the growing number of hill-walkers in the region as sources of international news. In the spring of 1992, a Spanish student came across Angus high in the mountains. Eager to practise his English he engaged Angus in conversation. The student told Angus of the forthcoming Olympic Games in Barcelona. Excited by the student's colourful description of Spain and the Games, Angus decided to attend the event in person and two months later arrived in Barcelona. The ticketless Angus stood outside the stadium with his canny brain working overtime, watching a growing number of individuals entering the stadium through a small entrance at the side. He noticed that they all seemed to be carrying objects. Perhaps they were workmen, he thought. He moved closer and watched. Within minutes a thin young man came along carrying an extremely long pole. He approached the official at the door and said "Pole Vault". The official moved to the side and the man entered. Next came a heavy-set man with a spear. Angus wondered how a man could carry such a dangerous weapon in a modern city. The man shouted " Javelin " and was presently admitted. Angus was puzzled. Perhaps they were all connected with security. His puzzlement grew when a huge man appeared with a steel ball in his hand. He shouted "Shot Putt" and walked past the official. It suddenly dawned on Angus that these people were competitors. He opened his programme and sure enough under the heading "events" he saw the three words the men had said. Angus laughed to himself as a plan began to take shape in his mind. First he needed to buy one or two things. An hour later he reappeared dressed in a tracksuit with "Scotland" written across the chest. Over his shoulder he carried a roll of barbed wire (铁丝网). Smiling to himself he walked up to the official and as casually as he could, shouted, "Fencing!" 26. Which was Angus' new way of getting information about the outside world? A. It involves a handsome man standing outside a young woman’s window, singing a love song to her to win her over. However, trying to woo a female with songs is not just something that humans do. A few animals sing love songs as well. Birds and elephants are romantic but the latest animal to serenade a female might surprise you—it is the humble mouse.     You may find it odd to find out that mice sing. We do not hear them because the frequency of their voice is so high. In fact, scientists have known for some time that male mice make special sounds to females, but it has always been assumed that the sounds are produced instinctively (本能地) and randomly, with little thought going into the process. But new research suggests otherwise. When male mice with different voices were put in a cage together, scientists found that they would gradually change their pitches (音调) to sound like one another. But when a female mouse was put in the cage with two males, one male would change his pitch to match the other. “It was usually the smaller animal changing the pitch to match the larger animal,” professor Erich Jarvis, leader of the study, from Duke University, US, told BBC News. This ability, known as vocal learning, is rare in the natural world. It had been thought to be limited to some birds, such as parrots—as well as whales and dolphins. The latest findings challenge the long-held opinion that mice cannot learn to adapt their voices.     Scientists also found the part of the brain that controls the mice’s singing ability. In the experiment, they damaged the cells in this part of the mice’s brain and found that the animals couldn’t keep their songs in pitch or repeat them any more. This also happened when the mice became deaf. Jarvis said that this finding had changed his understanding of the way mice make sound. “In mice we find that the pathways that are at least modulating (调整) these vocalizations (发声法) are in the forebrain, in places where you actually find them in humans,” he said. “If we’re not wrong, these findings will be a big boost to scientists studying diseases like autism and anxiety disorders.” 54.  What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “serenade”? A. To sing love songs. B. To challenge others.    C. To hug others.      D. To fight for love. 55. Which of the following is proven wrong by the latest discovery? A. The frequency of mice’s voice is so high that it’s impossible for humans to hear it. B. When male mice make special sounds to females they can’t control the sounds. C. Birds and elephants are both romantic animals that are good at expressing love. D. Animals like mice are smart even though they often make sounds randomly. 56.  What do parrots, whales and dolphins have in common according to the passage? A. They are all animals well-known for their smart appearances. B. They are often chosen to carry out scientific experiments on. C. They all have the ability to learn to adapt their voices. D. Their numbers are quite limited in the natural world. 57.  Romantic movies and TV shows are mentioned at the beginning of the passage to ________. A. help readers better understand the article B. stress the importance of the article C. explain why this article is written D. get readers interested in the topic 参考答案: ABCD
