Watson entered Mr Smith’s office. The boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance.
“Watson,” said Mr Smith, “this past year your department (部门)hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry but you’ll have to go.” “But sir, if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.”
“What’s that?” said the boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.”
“I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军) there.”
The boss sat perfectly still for a long time—a faraway(恍惚的)look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said,“We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours may be more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.”
Watson got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School—written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple(跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. That woman carried a new blanket (毛毯) over her arm. Wordlessly, she gave it to me.
“Is it finished?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No. It is ready,” she replied. I handed her the money and took the blanket.
“It is beautiful, so skillfully woven (编织),” I said to my mother. “But what did she mean when she said it was not finished? How can it be ready if it is not finished?”
“I will tell you later,” my mother said, “but first I will take you to the Navajo village.”
We went down to the village. A group of young men were making sand pictures. We walked through the whole village, watching the different things the people were doing.
It was not until that evening that my mother finally explained the Navajo (纳瓦霍人)woman's words.
“Did you notice anything about the things the people were making?” my mother asked.
“What should I have noticed?” I looked at her and asked.
“Each thing the Navajo make has one small part that is not complete. The designs (设计) in their sand pictures are often not perfectly done, for example —the line of a circle may not quite close. If you look carefully at your blanket, you will probably find a stitch (一针) missing.”
I took the blanket off, but it looked as perfect as any design could be. Then suddenly, I noticed that sure enough a stitch was missing!
“But why do the Navajo intentionally leave some tiny part unfinished?” I asked.
“They believe that when anything is completed or finished, it means the end has come — it will not be perfect until then. Then too, with a circle, they believe that they must leave a pathway for the bad spirits to run away and the good spirits to come in. So, often, they do not make the line close.”

A. A stitch in time is very important. B. Life only becomes perfect when you die.
C. He who makes no mistake is a perfect man.
D. You must always try to make your life complete.
32. What's the main idea of the text?
A. The Navajo are good at making things. B. The Navajo are brave and hard-working.

One animal which is still alive, but has almost disappeared from the world, is the Chinese river dolphin or baiji.
The baiji is a beautiful animal with a graceful body and a long nose. It is blue-grey with a white underside, weighs between 100 and 160 kilogrammes , and can grow up to eight feet long. It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River. Most dolphins live in the sea so the baiji is very unusual. It is one of only five kinds of river dolphins in the world.
In the past , there were many stories about the baiji. One story said that the dolphin was really a beautiful princess who had drowned in the river .Another said it was a kind of horse that could gallop(急速行进) across water, carrying God on its back.
Sadly, the situation today is very different. Many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin and the river is busy, noisy and polluted. The baiji is almost blind and moves around using sounds. With so many boats and people using the river, the animals cannot find their way around. They are unable to find food, or find each other. Year by year, the number of baiji in the river becomes smaller and smaller.
A lot of work is being done to help the baiji. One section of the river has been made into a kind of nature park, where the bajij can be safe. Fishermen work together with scientists and tell them when they see a bajij, or if they find an injured one. Injured animals are taken to a research center and nursed back to be healthy. However , in spite of these measures , scientists estimate(估计) that the number of the bajij still alive in the river may be less than 100. If things continue as they are, the lovely creature will disappear in the next 25 years.
33.Which description about the baiji is WRONG ?
A.It has already died out from the world. B.It is blue-grey with a white underside.
C.It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River.
D.It is one of only 5 kinds of river dolphins in the world.
34.The reasons why the baiji is disappearing are the following EXCEPT .
A.many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin , making there noisy and polluted
B.the baiji is blind because of the pollution and can’t find the way around
C.the boats and people are noisy , making the animals cannot find their way around by sounds
D.they are unable to find food or find each other by sounds since the river is noisy
35.What can we learn from the passage ?
