STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITIES JOB CATEGORY: TOUR DESK ATTENDANT HEAD: G.M. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: CHILDREN’S QUIZ STANDARD: EACH EMPLOYEE WILL HAVE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACTIVITY AND THE ABILITY TO CARRY IT OUT. PROCEDURE: The children’s quiz is an activity which may be used as an alternative to the talent show, or as a wet weather activity. The emphasis will be on enjoyment. Introduction 1. Take children to the area. 2. Arrange them in teams. 3. Assemble scoreboard. 4. Explain rules and sequence of rounds. 5. Invent team names and elect captains. Content 6. Begin by having a general round of questions. 7. Then have a few theme rounds such as, questions for different age groups, for girls, for girls, for boys, for team captains etc. 8. The next round would be a mastermind round, highlighting one from each team. 9. The fourth round could involve participation – perhaps singing a song or running forward with an answer or some other form of participation. 10. The next round could be the ‘talking for a minute’ round. Different rounds could be added depending on the levels and interests of the children. Maximum participation should be encouraged at all times. The event duration is one hour and the rounds should be planned so as to end on time with enough time for an announcement of winners and a clear conclusion. The success of the event would depend entirely on the instructor and his/her ability to improvise effectively. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: CHILDREN’S MEAL STANDARD: EACH STAFF MEMBERS MUST BE ABLE TO ASSIST WITH THE CHILDREN’S MEAL AND GENERAL ORGANIZATION OF IT. PROCEDURE: The children’s meal will be from 5 pm to 7 pm for seven days a week. It will be preceded every day by a children’s activity, usually finishing by 6 pm. The attendant should, on completion of the earlier activity, escort all the children to the Ocean Lanai area – ensuring that none have prior commitments to meet parents. Then: 1. Seat all children. 2. Organize orders. 3. Stay with the group for the duration of the meal, engaging all in conversations, stories etc. This will be aimed at keeping all the children in one place in quiet conversation to allow food to digest. 4. At 7 p.m., another children’s activity will be available and the attendant will ensure all children know about it. those who are interested will be taken to the next activity. The attendant should ensure that this event is orderly and that there is not too much noise generated to disturb other guests. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: CARRYING OUT THE CHILDREN’S TREASURE HUNT STANDARD: ALL EMPLOYEES WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO ORGANIZE AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY PROCEDURE: The children’s treasure hunt will initially be held at 4.45 p.m to 6.00 p.m and the meeting place will be the beach bure. The basic equipment needed will be the guide sheet. This will be handed out to each pair and it will outline what is to be done. Also needed are pencils. The stages are as follows:- 1. Ensure all children know about the event earlier in the day. 2. Introduce the event to the participants at the beach bure. 3. Explain that they have one hour to complete all the items on the list and to discover where the final clue is hidden. Everyone must stay in pairs and must remain on the Sheraton grounds. The meeting time at the end of the activity is 5.45 p.m. at the beach bure. 4. On completion of the hunt, decide on a winner and conclude the event. This event must be encouraged and the fun element must be stressed. The instructor’s role is minimal but still very important. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: EXCURSION TO THE LOCAL CARVING VILLAGE STANDARD: ALL STAFF SHOULD KNOW ALL ABOUT THE TOUR AND BE ABLE TO ACCOMPANY IT AT SHORT NOTICE IF NECESSARY. PROCEDURE: This excursion initially will be laid on twice a week, once for adults and once for children. It will last 1 1/2 hours. Stages:- 1. Ensure that all interested parties are notified of the event and time, (using the activity desk and word of mouth). 2. Prepare numbers and ensure adequate transport is available and booked. (Transport must be booked well ahead and numbers confirmed). 3. Ensure that all guests are present before leaving – and escort the tour when necessary, (usually a tour guide will be present but often one of the activity staff will have to accompany the trip). 4. Explain a bit about the village on the way, the do’s and don’ts and what they can buy. 5. Upon arrival greet Mosese and escort guest through village. 6. Allow l 1.4 hours maximum for trip, and organize the return smoothly. All staff will be taken on a familiarization trip to the village on 30 October at 2 p.m. More details can be added after the trip, as a clearer picture will have been painted .The children’s trip will involve more build up and a different kind of preparation. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: SCAVENGER HUNT AND CRAB RACE STANDARD: ALL STAFF MUST BE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY CARRY OUT THIS EVENT PROCEDURE: The organization of this event is similar to the Treasure hunt. It will be held from 4.30 to 6.00 p.m. initially, and children will meet at the beach bure. Equipment needed – a simple handout which mentions articles to be found and tasks to do. Also needed are bags to carry findings in, pencils, and one marker. The stages are like the treasure hunt: 1. Ensure all children know about the event earlier in the day. 2. Introduction of rules and tasks. 3. Explain that one hour maximum is allowed for completion of the tasks. Children again operate in pairs and must stay on the Sheraton grounds. 4. On completion of the event, the discoveries will be looked at and the crabs will be given a number. 5. A winner will be chosen. 6. The crab race is then started using a circle and by putting all crabs in the centre. The winner is the first out of the circle. This second part of the activity will be very informal and should last until approximately 6.00 p.m. As in the treasure hunt, enthusiasm is the main requirement of the instructor. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: CHILDREN’S EARLY EVENING GAMES ACTIVITIES STANDARD: ALL STAFF WILL KNOW THE CHOICE OF GAMES AVAILABLE AND BE ABLE TO ORGANISE THE EVENT PROCEDURE: This activity lasts for one four usually between 7 and 8 p.m. It can take two forms depending on the mood of the children and the number. These two forms can be merged if the need arises. Form 1 1. Set out 6 or 7 tables. 2. On each table place a children’s board game – which can be supplied from the activity desk. 3. Organise the children into two teams. 4. Begin a tournament using those games, with a clear scoring system. 5. They could be used in a rotation system or in groups. 6. The instructor would be the referee and would walk around and encourage players. Form 2 7. Organise the children into two teams. 8. Go through a series of games, giving points for team winners. Some suggestions include: - Clap trap, - Pass the scissors, - The train game, - Captain’s aboard, - Paper “item game,” - Charades etc. PROCEDURES: (continued) The two forms can be joined together if needed if needed. Whichever system is used it should be gauged by the instructor to ensure maximum participation and enjoyment. If at any time the children need motivation, a more active or more interesting game can be used to punctuate the quiet ones. It is up to the instructor to improvise, using the games mentioned. On completion of the hour, the instructor must ensure that all games are finished and packed away and that any other equipment used is removed. There must be a clear beginning and ending to the event. STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITIES JOB CATEGORY: TOUR DESK ATTENDANT HEAD: G.M. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: CHILDREN’S PAINTING COMPETITION STANDARD: ALL STAFF SHOULD KNOW THE ACTIVITY AND BE ABLE TO ORGANISE IT PROCEDURE: This activity will last one hour only. It will be carried out indoors at an unspecified location. Meeting place is the Beach Bure. The equipment needed includes, paint, pens, brushes, large and small paper, pencils etc. The stages are as follows: 1. Introduction an explanation – this would have to involve lots of encouragement and promotion of ideals – perhaps a theme. 2. Giving out of equipment. 3. Commencement. 4. Discussion and positive feedback – a voting system for the choice of winner. The instructors role will be vital. Encouragement should be given at all times. He should have ideas and be able to motivate children to produce a picture. The marking of the end result is very important. Only positive construction should be given. When deciding on a winner, allow children’s input first. STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITIES JOB CATEGORY: TOUR DESK ATTENDANT HEAD: G.M. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: LAUNCHING AND RECOVERING OF SAILBOARDS AND HOBIE CATS STANDARD: ALL STAFF WILL KNOW THE PROPER WAY TO LAUNCH AND RECOVER BOATS PROCEDURE: The launching and recovery of sailboards and hobie cat is vital not only to the comfort of guests but also to avoid any damage to the equipment. Staff must be aware of the conditions before sending out guests and must offer lifejackets to anyone going out. Anyone on the water must be constantly monitored. The following are rigid guidelines: Hobie Cat Launching 1. The guest must be reminded how to operate and where they can/cannot go. 2. It must be pulled in while remaining head to wind. 3. The guests climb aboard while the instructor holds it steady. 4. When guests are ready, the instructor will push the bow away from the wind and guests will lower the rudders as the boat gently pulls away. Hobie Cat Receiving 5. Guests will be discouraged from heading straight into the beach at full speed. 6. Instead they will be encouraged to release the mainsail and come in closer to the wind at a slow pace. 7. All incoming boats will be caught. 8. As guests get off the hobie they will be helped ashore. PROCEDURES: (continued) 9. The Hobie Cat will then be turned around to face the wind if it is not already. It will then be pulled up the beach carefully avoiding any rocks or stones. 10. It will be stored ‘head to wind.’ Sailboard Launching 11. The guest will be reminded how to operate the board and where he can/cannot go. 12. The sailboard will be lifted and not dragged in two stages, firstly rig and secondly board. It will then be attached. 13. The rig will be placed down wind of the board, with the instructor initially holding the stern to aid stability. 14. The guest may then take the board, with the instructor initially holding the stern to aid stability. Sailboard Receiving 15. As the board approaches, the guest will have been told to stop before hitting the sand. 16. The guest will then leave the board to the instructor. 17. The board and rig will then be separated and carried individually up the beach and stored neatly. Safety will be emphasised, and at all times care will be taken with the equipment. STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITIES JOB CATEGORY: TOUR DESK ATTENDANT HEAD: G.M. APPROVAL: DATE: TASK: OPERATION OF CHASE BOAT STANDARD: THE EMPLOYEES WILL KNOW HOW TO MIX FUEL, HOW TO DRIVE THE BOAT, AND HOW TO MAKE A RESCUE PROCEDURE: The chase boat is vital in the safety of all guests all guests using equipment on the water. It is the only sure way of getting to guests in trouble – consequently it must be maintained thoroughly and used with great care. Safety operation and rescue procedures: 1. Always ensure that the outboard is switched off and lifted up when coming in to the beach. 2. When leaving the beach, ensure that the water is deep enough to lower the engine, and don’t start until clear of the bottom. Paddle out if necessary. 3. Only run the engine at 1/2 throttle, except in the event of an emergency. The boat is not a toy and must be treated with respect. Misuse could lead to suspension. 4. Before going out in the boat, check the gas level, that oars and lifejackets are on board, that there is an anchor, and the boat is prepared (If in doubt consult the equipment supervisor). 5. Do not overload the boat – the maximum allowance is five persons. 6. When coming in to a dock, ensure that no guest has fingers or arms outside the boat, and that fenders are out. 7. Always lash the boat to a dock with a bow and stern line, or a bow and stern anchor. 8. When making a rescue or coming up to a guest in the water, return the engine to neutral and turn it off. Only approach a person “bow first.” PROCEDURES: (continued) 9. If approaching a windsurfer, approach bow first, turning engine off. Ensure that guest gets into the boat and then lift or tow the board and rig into shore. If towed, only tow the board beside and not behind the boat. Always ensure that nothing is hanging over the back near the prop. For other safety suggestions consult the engine handbook via the equipment supervisor. If in doubt when operating the boat, think ‘safety first’. To start the engines do the following:- 1. Check gas. 2. Ensure air vent is open. 3. Squeeze gas bulb three times. 4. Ensure engine is in neutral. 5. Apply choke if needed. 6. Turn ‘rev’ handle to ‘start’. 7. Pull start cord (or turn ignition key if available). 8. To enga
