So in this paper brings forth a tentative idea, that is, to improve listening and spoken English by using English songs. Keywords: English songs; English listening; spoken English 0. Introduction 1. Characteristics of English songs English songs are full of rhythms and emotions. Change of the rhythm is obvious; as for vowels, they should be given full pronunciation, and they can be prolonged, while consonants are often pronounced with a short force; and some syllables are also lengthened. There are quite many advantages of English songs, which will be considered and discussed in the following paragraphs. 1.1 English songs are a source of aural input English songs are a kind of especially good listening material. Compared with other English listening materials, they are more interesting, motivating, attractive and unforgettable. They are never dull. As is mentioned in this paper, listening is closely related to speaking, and more language input is helpful for more effective language output. Listening to English songs as often as possible is in some way good for the improvement of speaking ability. In a word, the ultimate purpose of listening to more English songs is to improve speaking ability 1.2 English songs are good for learning pronunciation and rhythm Listening to and singing English songs as more as possible contributes much to learning accurate pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of spoken English. Real English songs---sung by foreign singers---always offer idiomatic pronunciation and good rhythm. From English songs, we can get lots of phonetic knowledge, such as, change of length of vowels, pauses plosives, lose of plosives, sound linking, weak-forms, assimilation, co-articulation, elision, stress, rhythm and so on and so forth. Fluent and clear spoken English needs these phonetic techniques because of their great importance in conveying meanings effectively. From the early folk songs sung by the black to the blues, then to jazz and from the rhythmic blues to modern rock music, all of them represent the inner rules of English rhythm. The styles of these English songs at the same time correspond to a great extent to the exaggerating methods or techniques of pronouncing. Here is a simple song in which sound linking is reflected: Come and See My Family: “`Come and `see my `family, `Under the `old `apple `tree! `This is my `father. `How do you do? `Sit down and `have a `cup of `tea with me.” In this song, the technique of sound linking is so obvious that we can make use of it to achieve fluency that is an important factor in spoken English. 1.3English songs contain amounts of language knowledge Language is not static, but constantly developing . English songs are also the characteristics of the times. Therefore, the English songs in addition to raising interest in tools for listeners outside of bringing the joy of the senses, or English-speaking countries an integral part of the culture, which is rich in linguistic knowledge and cultural background knowledge English songs contain a lot of language knowledge that is quite useful for spoken English. This mainly reflects in words, phrases, idioms, expressions, sentence patterns, and also “spoken grammar”[1] Actually, spoken language is not merely a variant of “correct” written forms. Rather, the spoken language, particularly the interactive discourse of native speakers, incorporates forms that are widespread and consistent in usage, and most importantly, meaningful. Due to the dynamic interactive nature of the spoken language, many of these features are not or cannot be realized in more standardized written forms. In spoken English, we can find the widespread utilization of ellipsis. For example, we can often hear sentences in English songs like “Don’t know why, don’t know why…” which has no subject. The subject (maybe “I”) is left out here. This kind of ellipsis phenomenon occurs frequently in oral communication. As we know, in English study, there are so many words, expressions, and even rules of spoken grammar to remember and then to use freely and correctly; and usually they seem to be so dull or difficult. In spite of this, for effective oral communication, it is still quite necessary to master as many as possible. 1.4 English songs reflect values and way of thinking of the Western people As we know, way of thinking and different values can greatly influence what to say and how to say. In other words, spoken expressions usually reflect people’s values and way of thinking. The Western people and Chinese people think differently in many aspects. So to speak idiomatic English, we Chinese have to know how the Western people think, how they organize their words and sentences to express what they want to convey. 1.5 English songs provide various topics for spoken English Many English learners complain that when they are talking in English, they don’t know what to talk about---they don’t have enough common topics; and even if they find one, they can’t find enough words related to the topic. English songs can offer much help in what to say and in the vocabulary that is related to the topic, that is, thematic vocabulary. English songs contain a variety of themes, such as love, peace, hero, encouragement, friendship, etc.. All of these are good themes and can be used as topics in spoken English practice. 2.The relationship between English songs and listening 2.1 Listening to English songs on the benefits of hearing First, the English song is the best material to learn pronunciation skills. If Lian Du, incomplete or complete loss of burst and vowel weakening, and assimilation. Second, can enhance some commonly used slang or spoken language understanding, often appear in his lyrics, such as gonna, wanna, ain't so on. Third, the song is also commonly used to learn vocabulary and grammar of good information, songs often occur, such as the completion of tenses, clauses, subjunctive mood so difficult to master grammar points, through the songs to learn, the effect is more obvious, more profound impression Fourth, the songs are also extended background cultural knowledge and a good way. To listen to different genre of songs in different countries can enjoy the unique charm of Western culture and can understand that the East-West cultural differences.百科词典       Loading....... 同反义词         相关例句         英英解释       百科词典       Loading....... 同反义词         相关例句         英英解释       222 2.2Strategies of practicing listening when listening to English songs Music is soothing mood regulator, each of us is to grow with the music, And more of the classics in English songs that were well received by the public favorite, the application of these familiar songs, can enhance the enthusiasm of learning that can fully mobilize the enthusiasm for study degree, because a stronger sense of rhythm in English songs, if not correctly grasp the pronunciation, will affect the right words to understand the lyrics, we can not understand lyrics, and only understand in order to imitate. English song contagious, die plate, to bring the United States to give the listener the enjoyment of listening to at the same time inspiring and listening comprehension ability, we need to have targeted students with questions for students to listen to, so that students with purpose to listen and understand the meaning of the lyrics, in the course of practice to improve level of knowledge, optimize the knowledge structure, the students probably understand the lyrics to the effect, you need to set up sampling tests and classroom issues, student oral presentation, etc. to the classroom for students to understand the ability to test. Compound dictation methods are mainly: (A) simple sentences to sort, Listening, Reading. This can effectively promote the level of listening comprehension, but also a positive process. 3 The relationship between English songs and spoken English 3.1 The similarities between the rhythm of music and that of spoken English “Music and language share several features. On the one hand, both stem from the processing of sounds; on the other, both are used by their authors or speakers to convey a message, although language is much more precise than music, whose effect is mainly emotional. On another level, music and language have intrinsic features in common, such as pitch, volume, prominence, stress, tone, pauses and rhythm.” Sounds are the roots of both music and speech. The melodic approach to language learning is mainly based on the evidence that musicality of speech has an effect not only on the pronunciation skills of English learners but also on their entire language acquisition process. First let’s see a sentence of the English song—Red River Valley: ---- ----5 1 │ 3 3 3 3 │ 3 3 2 3 │ 2 1 ---- ---- From this val-ley they say you are going,``` “It is obvious that the three words : ‘valley’, ‘say’, and ‘going’----these are stressed words---- all fall on the first or the third time of each section , that is, on the beat or secondary beat. The words: ‘From’, ‘this’, ‘they’ and ‘are’ are not key words, so they occupy only one time. While the words: ‘valley’, ‘say’, and ‘going’ all occupy two times; that is to say , when we sing these words, we have to prolong them, and we also have to give these three words full pronunciation . For the sake of the variety and richness of melody, the rhythm of a song often changes a lot freely; however, no matter how it changes, if the lyric of the song goes well with the music, the rhythm of the language will still be basically in accordance with the rhythm of the music.” The rhythm of music refers to regular combination of length and strength of sounds; the rhythm of language refers to combination of alternate changes in speed, pitch and pauses in a certain period of time. Different languages have different rhythms. The rhythm of music share many similar features. Mastery of the rhythm of music can be greatly helpful to the learning of the rhythm of spoken English. Their similarities are as follows: (C) Stress alternates with non-stress, and thus there is a striking contrast. In the melody of music, stress is rhythm which constitutes the basic element of the melody. And “English is a stress-timed language.” Each English sentence is made up of rhythm groups. In every rhythm group, no matter how many syllables, there is only one stressed syllable similar to beat in music and this stressed syllable plays a key role in the rhythm of spoken English. (D)Regularity of the Appearance of Stress The rhythm of music is regularly repeated; and the repetition is very strict. This is an important feature that makes music different from noise. The rhythm of spoken English also has the feature of regularity .Stress in spoken English appears in a periodical way, which is the manifestation of the rhythm. (E) Stress is not used to mark off different sense groups. In music, stress is rhythm but it is used to mark off sense groups. In English, stress is only used to mark off different rhythm groups, not sense groups. Many English learners confuse rhythm groups with sense groups in spoken English. This influences their spoken English badly. (F) Pause is an important factor in the making of rhythm . Both music and spoken English have pauses. In spoken English, there are many kinds of pauses, such as phonetic pause, grammatical pause , etc . . In a word, these similarities between music and spoken English tell us that enough attention should be paid to music in practicing spoken English. We can make full use of these similarities to practice spoken English. We should notice the rhythmical beauty of spoken English and try to master the rhythm of spoken English by using English songs .Then this will bring twice the result with half the effort. 3.2 Close relationship between speaking and listening In real communication, actually, both listening and speaking belong to oral activities. As listening and speaking are two direct activities a
