Dolly Parton. the fourth of twelve children, was born in a small house in Tennessee. She came into the world on January 19th, 1946, and the doctor who delivered (接生) her, Robert F. Thomas, was only paid with a bag of corn. Of course, the doctor did not know what the future might hold for this little girl.
At the age of ten, Dolly appeared on a TV show in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1957, she took a bus to Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she made her first record, Puppy Love. A year later, she made her first public appearance at Nashville’s country music hall, but not as a singer: she played the drums with the Sevier High School Marching Band.
Dolly loved Nashville! However, she was still in high school, so she couldn’t go there often. She had to work long and hard before graduating in 1964. The day after the graduation ceremony (典礼), she achieved her first big dream: “I graduated from high school on a Friday night and left early on Saturday morning for Nashville.”
In 1967, she began to write lots of popular songs. She appeared on television shows, and received prizes for her music, all very quickly. Her looks and sense of humor made her a natural for the movies. In 1980, she appeared in her first movies Nine to Five, playing a secretary. Dolly wrote and sang the film’s theme (主题) song, and it was the most popular song of 1981.
Later on , Dolly Parton opened Dollywood, a large theme park near her hometown; she bought the local radio station and moved it to Dollywood. She also began a program that promises a college scholarship (奖学金) to every student who graduates from the high schools in her home county.

A woolly mammoth (猛犸象) that was frozen in ice for 40,000 years may make it possible for scientists top bring the animal back to life. The mammoth was found on an island off northern Russia in May 2013. Its body was still in good shape because of the ice. Something that looked like blood came out of it when it was first discovered. So far, scientists have found out that the animal, who they nicknamed Buttercup, was 2.5 metres tall and about 50 years old when it died. By examining the things in its intestines (肠道), scientists can tell it ate grassland plants like dandelions and buttercups.
Woolly mammoths have been extinct for 10,000 years. Many scientists think they could learn a lot more about the animal if they could study a living example. Dr. Tori Herridge, a scientist at the Natural History Museum in London, England, helped study the woolly mammoth’s body. She doesn’t think scientists should try to clone it. She said that scientists would need an Asian elephant to be the clone’s mother. This means they would have to keep several elephants in captivity (囚禁) while they experiment with the cloning process. But Asian elephants are endangered, and don’t do well in captivity. Besides, giving birth to a woolly mammoth could be dangerous for the elephant mother.
Insung Hwang is one of the scientists at Sooam, a company from South Korea. He said they have not yet found complete DNA in any of the samples (样本), but they have found pieces of DNA that could be pieced together. He added that it will take scientists a long time to study the genetic (基因的) information from the mammoth, and even longer before they could actually try cloning the animal.

Dear Kate,
I can’t believe I’m already in my sixth week of university. I meant to write earlier but there. Try to include everything on your list, from going to a lecture to returning your books to the library.
