Keywords:corpus;O.Henry;setting;theme 1.Introduction HenrywascalledtheAmericanGuyDeMaupassant.Bothauthorswrotetwistendings,butO.Henrysstoriesweremuchmoreplayfulandoptimistic.AmongtheformerstudiesonO.Henrysshortstories,thereisconsensusthatO.Henrysworksaregeneral

4、lybrandedwithsuchfeaturesassurprisingendings,useofcoincidenceorchancetocreatehumor,ingeniousandexquisitelayouts,smile-in-tearsironyandsoforth.Despitethedetailedliterarydiscussion,littleworkhasbeendonetorevealitslinguisticstyles.Noristhereworkwithquantitativedataasconvincingevidence.Intermsoftheestab

5、lisheddescriptionofhisstyle,itseemsunlikelythatthecorpus-basedmethodcanfindanythingoriginal.However,thestylisticanalysisinthepresentpaperaimstoillustratethevalueofcorpusempiricalmethodinexploringtheliterarystyles.Ontheonehand,statisticdatahelptoconfirmthecanonicalviewonO.Henrysshortstories;ontheothe

6、rhand,stylisticsisrelatedtolinguisticfeaturesofhisworks. 2.DataandMethodology ThispaperisdevotedtoinvestigatingthelinguisticstylesofO.Henrysworksinanempiricalway,applyingbothquantitativeandqualitativemethods.Thestudyadoptstwocorpora.OneisO.HenrysbookTheFourMillion(acollectionofstories),publishedin19

7、06,containsaseriesofshortstorieswhichtookplaceintheNewYorkCityintheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.Thecomputerreadableversionsavailableontheinternetareusedtosetupaminorworkingcorpusforinvestigation(TheotheroneisBrowncorpususedasareferencecorpus. ThecorpusconcordancesoftwareusedinthisstudyisWordsmithtools

8、.Wordsmithcanundertakemoredetailedanalysesoffrequenciesofconcordanceitemsandextractcollocationalinformation.Byuseofcorporasoftware,wordswithsignificantkeynessinthebookTheFourMillionwillbesortedoutfirst,andthenconcordancelineswithakeywordanditscollocateswillbeextracted.Thecorporadatawillbeprocessedby

9、statisticalinstruments. 3.OverallStatistics Theoverallstatisticsareoneessentialstartingpointforasystematiccorpus-basedtextualanalysis.WordsmithToolsareusedtoprovidetheoverallstatisticsofthetwocorporaandcomparisonismadeasshowninTable3.1. 11、okens,thecorpusforthepresentstudyseemsrathersmallcomparedwiththatofBrown.However,theobservedstandardizedtype-tokenratio(TTR)intheminorworkingcorpusishigherthanthatofBrown.Thehighertheratiois,themorelexicalvariationitreflects.Theresultisnotquitesurprising,forthefactthatO.Henrywasnotableforwritingstor

12、ieswithadiversityofexpressions.ThemeansentencelengthshowsthatO.Henrywroteshortersentencesthanthoseingeneralwrittentexts.Ineachofhisshortstories,severalincidentsandcluesarecondensedintomerely750wordsorso.Naturally,sentencesinshorterlengthcandelivernewinformationinaflashoftime.Ittakeslesstimeforreader

13、stofollowupthedevelopmentofthedramaticplot.Fundamentallyaproductofhistime,O.Henry#39;sworkprovidesoneofthebestEnglishexamplesofcatchingtheentireflavorofanage.Whetherroamingthecattle-landsofTexas,exploringtheartofthegentlegrafter,orinvestigatingthetensionsofclassandwealthinturn-of-the-centuryNewYork,

14、O.Henryhadaninimitablehandforisolatingsomeelementofsocietyanddescribingitwithanincredibleeconomyandgraceoflanguage. 4.KeywordAnalysisforSettings Settingisanindispensableconstituentforstorytelling.Settingbasicallyincludesseveralcloselyrelatedaspectsthetimeinwhichtheeventoractiontakesplace,theplacewhe

15、retheeventoractiontakesplaceandsocialenvironmentofthecharacters:themanners,customs,moralvaluesthatgovernthecharacterssociety.Inthepresentstudy,theinformationofthefirsttwoaspectscanbeprovidedbysortingoutthekeywordsofthetextsasTable4.1shows. 23、uralcontextsattheearly1920sinAmerica.People,whetherpoororrich,wouldliketotakeacupofcoffeeinacaforhaveaglassofdrinkatapub.Younggirlsdreamedofdancingwiththeirbelovedpartnersattheballofthelowerclass. Thenounkeywordsaboutthephysicalplaceswheretheeventstookplacecanberoughlygroupedintotwotypes:indoorplace

25、inarysettings.Otheradventuresmightbeexperiencedatthestreet,corner,sidewalk,orattheSecondAvenue,orevenonthebenchinalittlepark.InO.Henrysstoriestherewerenoplacesofimposingscaleoruniquestyle.Buttheywereplacesperfectlymatchedwiththestoriesofthecommonpeople. Whetherintheindoorplaceslikerestaurant,storean

26、dflat,orattheoutdoorplaceslikestreet,cornerandsidewalk,thereembeddedsomeunknownpossibilitiesforthecomingevents.Itwasattheseinconspicuousandordinaryplacesthattheunexpectedandaccidentalcoincidencestookplaceallthetime.O.Henryisgoodatwritingaboutordinarypeopleineverydaycircumstances.Heisquotedasoncesayi

30、irspecialtraits.Itisnotablethatsuchprofessionswereusuallytakenupbypeopleinthemiddleorlowersocialclasses.Onlyafewofthemwereluckyenoughtomaketheirfortuneandcontroltheirownlives;whereasmostofthemwhoearnedtheirmerelivingwerecontrolledbytheirmiserablefates.MostofO.Henry#39;sstoriestookplaceintheNewYorkCi

31、ty,anddealtforthemostpartwithordinarypeople:clerks,policemen,andwaitresses.Itistheauthorsrichlifeexperiencesandburdensoflifepressurethatbecamethesourceofdepictingsuchavarietyofprofessions. Anotherlargergroupofnounkeywordsdenotingthingsarescatteredindifferentstories.Theyarecloselyrelatedwiththethemeo

32、feachstory;therefore,itisunlikelytomakeanygeneralization.However,theconcordancelinesofthenumeralwordstwentyandtwosortedoutsomedistinctivecollocationalsequencesthatattractourattention.Bothfrequentlyco-occurwithtemporalnouns.Inthecaseoftwenty,morethan40percentofitsoccurrences(nineteenoutof42frequencie

33、s)areaccompaniedbytemporalwords,suchasyears,minutes,hours,days,seconds.Thewordtwoisalsolikelytoappearwithtemporalnouns,suchasweeks,hours,days,years,minutes.SuchsequencesofnumbersandtemporalnounsindicatethatmostofO.Henrysshortstoriesdevelopforashortperiod.Someeventstookweeksordaystodevelop,andotheran

34、ecdotesmightcometoanendinamoment.Asdiscussedabove,thelongestpassageoftimeturnsouttobetwentyyears,whichisentirelyrelatedwiththestoryAfterTwentyYears.Thisreflectsanotherrealisticfeaturethatinhisstorieseventsusuallyhappenedataspecifictime.Themeritsofconcretedescriptionoftimeshortenthedistancebetweenthe

35、charactersinsidethestoryandthereadersoutside. Thereistrueloveinhisstories.Loveasonekeywordstandsouttopraisethetouchingtruelovebetweenadestitutecouple.EitherinTheGiftoftheMagiorinAServiceofLove,thecoupleinthehumblecircumstancehelpedandlovedeachotherunselfishlyandwholeheartedly.Theirperfectandinnocent

36、loveboundupinthefettersofmoneyseemedevenmoreimpressiveandmoving. 6.Conclusion Throughcorpus-basedmethod,stylisticsofO.Henrysonecollectionofshortstorieshasbeenexplored.AsStubbs(2005:21-22)proposes,observationaldatacanprovidemoresystematicevidenceforunavoidablesubjectiveinterpretation.Differentfromthe

37、formerstudiesonO.Henrysworks,thepresentpaperhasattemptedtodelayinterpretationandprolonganalysis,givingweighttoquantitativeinvestigation.ThekeywordsandconcordfunctionsofWordsmithToolsattributetofindoutorreconfirmsomeuniquefeaturesofO.Henrysworks.Thepaperhascometothefollowingconclusions: (1)ThehigherT

38、TRintheworkingcorpusprovesO.Henryslexicaldiversityandwittynarration.Theshortermeansentencelengthrevealsthathisstoriesprogressrapidly,andshowarigideconomyofwords,whicharecustomarilyshortmostofthestoriesrunabouteighthundredwords. (2)ThefrequentnounkeywordsgiveacluetothesettingofO.Henrysshortstories.Th

39、etemporalkeywordstellthatallbutonestoryhappenedintheeveningandthedurationoftimewasnotlong.Someaccidentseventookplaceinafewhours.Thelocationkeywordsdenoteseveralordinaryplacesinacitywheresomethingaccidentalmightoccurwiththeauthorswittyarrangement. (3)Anothergroupofnounkeywordscastslightonthegeneralth

Thisisatentativestudyofcorpus-basedstylisticanalysisonO.Henrysonecollectionofshortstories.ThebasicstatisticinformationcomputedbyWordsmithToo
