Many pupils have interesting ideas about what life in the future will be like. There probably won't be schools any more. We’ll just sit at home and see teachers talking on a flat screen. Our homework will just be sent to teachers. And they have ideas about which subjects they will have in the future. Apart from “how to drive a space shuttle”, they will learn how to communicate with foreign planets, like Mars and Pluto. On the other hand, older people can’t imagine that life will be like that. “Schools will not exist in the year 2500, but not because we won’t need them anymore. There won’t be any young people like us at that time. People will be born at an age of 18. Childhood isn’t bad or boring, but the world will just need older people. They will have the chance to vote and the world will have more possibilities with older people in economic terms.” Over the next 100 to 200 years it will become harder to tell the difference between humans and machines. All body parts will be replaceable. A computer will function like a human brain, with the ability to recognize feelings and respond to them. Maybe a few decades later, a way will be found to transfer our spirit into a new body. Then we can choose to live as long as we want. It may even be possible to bring people back from the dead in the future. Though this is an interesting idea, it could be a problem, because if we had the chance to bring everyone back into the world, the population would probably be too large, and there would live too many people on the Earth. Though space shuttles and life without schools sounds great for pupils today, you have to imagine how it could really be. “I think the world will be polluted and it won't be nice,” says one young girl. But also, the problems with war and global warming are often themes of discussion in the world today. What will life really be like in 2500? It’s an interesting question! 24. What do young pupils and old people both believe about life in the future? A. Childhood will be boring. B. People will be born as adults. C. There will be no schools any more. D. Students won't need to do homework. 25. What problem may people have overcome in 200 years? A. War. B. Pollution. C. Large population. D. Short life span(短寿命). 26. Which one is not discussed in the text about life in the year 2500? A. Food. B. Technology. C. Education. D. Space exploration. 27. Which of the following may come true in the future according to the passage? A. Teachers will no longer be needed. B. Pupils will have the chance to vote. C. People will be able to communicate with life on Mars. D. There will be no difference between humans and computers. C Farming is a tradition among many in South Dakota, one that is not always easy to keep in the family. But one family has survived four generations and hopes to continue long into the future. The year was 1933 when Ed VanderWal’s father first stepped onto the farm. Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion his father gave him for farming every day while working the fields on the family farm in Volga. “Well, I was in the first grade when my dad moved here to this farm and I grew up on the farm. And that's what I was interested in doing more,” Ed said. But that love of working the land didn't stop with Ed. He’s passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day. Some people might worry that working sun up to sun down with family seven days a week would lead to a few family spats (口角). But for the VanderWals, the constant time together works just fine. “When families work together on a farm, it’s a challenge at times getting along. Everyone has to pull their weight and do their share. And that, of course, transfers from one generation to the next,” Scott said. And while they all get along like any family, with good days and bad, it’s tradition that keeps each generation teaching the next. “But we taught them to work with animals at a young age, like most farmers do. So it’s nice to be able to pass that tradition onto the next generation,” Scott said. The youngest generation of the VandcrWals, Ed’s three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age. 28. Why did Ed VanderWal devote himself to the farm? A. Because he grew up on the farm. B. Because he was affected by his father. C. Because he could do nothing but work on the farm. D. Because he wanted to set a good example for his sons. 29. What can we learn from the passage? A. Managing a farm is a real challenge. B. Ed has divided his farm into six parts. C. Ed taught his sons how to work on farms. D. Scott and David own their own farms now. 30. What’s the passage mainly about? A. A farming family. B. A successful farmer. C. The agricultural generation. D. The agricultural tradition. 31. What can be inferred form the passage? A. Ed’s farms have no lack of successors. B. The VariderWals have strict family rules. C. Ed’s tradition has great effect on the local. D. Ed’s grandchildren will drop out of school. D Emily and Zach are confused! Their parents told them they could choose between Massachusetts and Arizona for their vacation this summer, and they think both states seem pretty amazing. Emily has always wanted to visit Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. Zach and she both agree that walking along the Freedom Trail would be pretty great. Emily and Zach both love the beach. If they went to Massachusetts, they could spend a few days at the beaches on Cape Cod. Zach finds learning about Native Americans extremely interesting and has always wanted to travel along the Apache Trail in Arizona. Emily is not as keen on traveling along this trail as Zach, but they both would like to visit Phoenix, the capital, and then travel to Meteor Crater. Zach learned in science class that Meteor Crater is a very huge hole. It was created when a huge object from space fell to Earth. The only drawback that Zach doesn't like in Arizona is the heat. It is very hot in this southwestern state. Massachusetts, on the other hand, is in the northeastern United States. Here, Zach and Emily and their parents could enjoy the nice weather. How will they decide which state they should visit? That would be great if they could take two trips! 32. What will Emily and Zach spend their summer vacation doing? A. Visiting their parents. B. Doing some sightseeing. C. Learning how to swim. D. Living with Native Americans. 33. What can we know from the passage? A. Emily likes the hot weather in Arizona. B. Zach isn't interested in traveling along the Apache Trail. C. Both Emily and Zach enjoy spending time at the beaches. D. Zach has always wanted to visit the capital of Massachusetts. 34. What does the underlined word “drawback” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Value. B. Reason. C. Interest. D. Disadvantage. 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. A Difficult Choice. B. An Interesting Plan. C. An Unforgettable Trip. D.
