Literature Review
Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, actually this book is an illustration of the society at that time. The author Jane Austen perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at that time and demonstrated her own views towards love and marriage, that is marriage should based on both money and love, while the latter enjoys the more important position.
Pride and Prejudice is one of the masterpieces of Jane Austen. This work selects material from daily life and vividly reflects the conservative and occlusive British town life and world during the period between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is different from other literature work at that time, during when the sentimental novels and artificial method were popular in society. Pride and Prejudice not only attracted plenty of readers at that time, but also gave the readers a unique art experience at present.
This thesis combines the writing background, the British gentry culture at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and discuss the four kinds of attitudes towards love in Pride and Prejudice, then describe author’s view of love and marriage. The author believes that love and marriage are interrelated with property and social status, but love and marriage do not only depend on these two aspects. The correct marriage should be established on the basis of mutual love and mutual respect. She opposes marriage for money, also opposes hasty marriage, and stresses the importance of emotional factors in marriage.
In the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author describes four love stories of young men and women and clearly expressed her views on love and marriage through comparison, identification and judgment. The marriage arrangements between Jane and Bingley, Elizabeth and Darcy fiercely criticize the social phenomenon of the concept of the institution of marriage and the family status, so that people seem to have heard women demanding an independent personality and the earnest voice for equal rights. The arrangement of the combination between Charlotte and Collins mercilessly ridicules women who treated marriage as the meter making compromises of food and clothing, holding the concept of fatalistic marriage. Through the marriage of Lydia and Wickham, the author expresses her contempt to marriage for moment erotic and impulse. Jane Austin has repeatedly stressed that the mercenary marriage is never desirable, and the marriage without love will not be happy. Her forethought and boldness rarely can be compared. The current institution of marriage pays more attention on the perfect match, status and wealth, which acts as a great obstacle to the conclusion of a happy marriage between young men and women. This social issue can not be ignored.
In the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author does not take the simple frontal attack to approach this serious social problem, but in a roundabout way for side attack. The language of this book is witty, but it is a ruthless character behind a gentle appearance. British literary critic Andrew Cecil Bradley said: "Jane Austen has two distinct tendencies. She is a moralist and a humorist. These two tendencies tend to mix up together, even fully integrated."
Austen’s marital morality has important social and historical significance. It lashes the immoral view on marriage, which is based on money, status, and all kinds of ugly behavior influenced by this concept. At the same time, it emphasizes the independence and dignity of women on the marital problems. Austen emphasizes marriage must be based on love, which is consistent with the spirit of Engels: "Only the love-based marriage is ethical".
As an female novelist, Jane Austen expressed her rejection of marriage funded on money and social status. To a large extend, women married not husbands, but the money. That is the sadness of women at time. In this novel, the author clearly demonstrated her point of view toward love and marriage, that is only combined economic situation and mutual love can bring happiness to marital life. By description and discussion of these four kinds of love patters, it is easily to see that the author strongly appreciates the marriage funded on mutual understanding and true love, but satires the marriage based on desire and lure. Only true love can bring happiness to marital life. it is also suitable in today’s society.
In modern era, women have an improved situation in society and they can choose husband by themselves. Nowadays, marriage for women are no longer the way to survive, but the way the achieve their marital desire. But that not means the novel Pride and Prejudice has no use for us. On the contrary, this novel still possesses an important status in people’s mind. Because every woman are longing for the marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy, and the independent character of modern women gives them chances to achieve. People read this novel, imagining the beautiful love between Elizabeth and Darcy, hoping that one day this can be achieved in their own life. While the most important thing for readers is that they can feel the pure love in it, which gives them confidence and encouragement to pursue their own desirable marriage.
In face of marriage, people always have their own choice to make their own judgments, intending to make plans for later life. In modern society, people indulge in passion and pursue momentary happiness like Lydia and Wickham, or be content with the status and position, like Charlotte to live a boring life, or daring to pursue their love and struggle to the establishment of happy family, like Elizabeth and Darcy? Different people have different views, but no matter how to choose, people will have their own reasons. It may be the eternal topic left by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Introduction
Jane Austen (1775-1817), born in Steventon, Hampshire, England, died when she was only 42 years old and never married. But in her brief but brilliant life, she created six realism novels which were popular all over the world. Pride and Prejudice is one of them and is included in the World's Top Ten Novels. It is easy to see the great charm of this novel.
Generally speaking, Jane Austen was a writher of the 18th-century, although she lived mainly in the 19th century. As a realistic writer, she believed that it is her duty to express a discriminated and serious criticism of life in her works, and expose the follies and illusions of mankind. She showed contemptuous feelings towards snobbery, stupidity, worldliness and vulgarity through subtle satire and irony. As for style, she was a advocator of neoclassicism, upholding those traditional ideas of order, proportion, reason and gracefulness in the novel writing.
Austen's literary works mainly concerned about human beings in their personal relationships. Because of this, her novels had a great significance among the world. It is her conviction that a man's relationship to his wife and children is at least as important as his concerns about his belief and career. It can reveal his moral quality accurately and truthfully. If one wants to know about a man's talents, one should see him at work; but if one wants to know about his nature and temper, one should see him at home. Austen shows a human being not at moments of crisis, but in the most trivial incidents of everyday life.
