Teaching Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and read the following words and expressions: burst, events, suffering, in ruins, destroy, injure, shock, rescue, trap, disaster, etc.
2. Scan& skim the text to get the general idea; read the text carefully to get some useful information to solve problems.
3. Know some basic knowledge about earthquakes.
Important points:
1. Reading skills: scanning& skimming, reading for details
2. Recognition of words and expressions: burst, events, suffering, in ruins, destroy, dig out, rescue, trap, disaster, etc.
Difficult Points: Understanding of some complex sentences.esp, attribute clause.

Teaching Aid: PPT, board
Teaching Procedure:
Step1 Lead-in
1. Greetings
2. T asks Ss “Why should we remember May 12th of 2008?” and leads in the topic “earthquakes”
Step2 Pre-reading
1. Free talk
2. Guess
a. T asks several Ss to answer according to the pictures.
b. T writes down some new words on the board. eg. well, pipes, burst
你这里是对文章的预测,那为什么不接下来,让学生读了证实一下他们猜测,如果直接高戍学生答案,体现不了阅读的价值
Step3 While-reading
Note: In this whole process, if necessary, T leads Ss to get some strategies while they are doing reading.
1. Skimming & scanning
a. T asks Ss to find out the answers to the following questions:
Also, T explains some new words briefly. eg. injured, destroy
b. T asks Ss to skim the text and divide it into 3 parts, that is, before the earthquake, during the earthquake and after the earthquake.
2. Detailed reading
Note: Also, in these following tasks, T 你这个里面的三个任务让学生读几遍,怎么读,你的任务设计有没有体现一个阅读的层次和逻辑
will briefly explain some new words or expressions that they encounter to help Ss to understand the text better.
Task 1 Matching
Task 2 Make a timeline
Task 3 Q&A
a. T asks from which paragraph they can find the answer to each question. (先让学生定位每个问题的答案大概在哪个段落)
b. T divides Ss into 2 groups to compete to answer the questions.
Task 4 Summary
T asks 4 students to answer and let the rest to judge each S’s answer.
Task 5 “A night the earth didn’t sleep”?
1. Why does the author use such title?
2. Suggest another title for the text?
Step4 Post-reading
1. Circle out something useful or puzzling???
a. T asks Ss to pick out some words, expressions or sentence patterns they think that are useful in their writings.
T shows some useful words, expressions or sentence patterns with PPTs and explains to Ss briefly.
b. T asks Ss to circle out something that 如果学生提出来困惑,干嘛不当堂抽时间引导他们解决,不一定你要告诉他们答案,你可以提示引导
they do not clearly understand. (Leave it to their homework, that is to say, T encourages Ss to solve their problems in their own after class.)
2. Discussion
What do you learn from such a disaster?
Step5 Homework
1. Find more news about earthquake and write down a piece of news.
2. Try to solve your puzzles about the text.
3. Try to understand the usage of Attribute Clause.
