Hello, everyone! From now on you are in the ninth grade. In the year to e, I believe, you will have more tests. Then how do you study for a test? Look at the title “How do you study for a test?” It is what we are going to learn this week.
“How do you study for a test?”
—“How do you study for a test?” 你如何备考？
—“I study for a test by going over the old exam papers. ” 我就是做做历年考题。
Now translate the dialogue into Chinese. Pay attention to the word in black.
问句中“how”就“方式、手段”提问，do和study for a test 是谓语部分，for a test 是介词短语，表示目的。答句中的“by介词短语”作状语，表示“方式、手段”。

Next turn to page 2. Look at the pictures and check√the ways you study for an English test. Then add other ways you use sometimes.

1b Listening and speaking
Listen to understand how these people in the picture on page 2 study for a test. While listening, pay your attention to examples of “verb＋by …structure” and the useful expressions in it. Now go to read on page 128 the tapescript.
While reading try to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions. That’s grammar study, indeed.

Hello, class. First I’d like to tell you how I learn best. Do you like to know how I learn best?
I learn best by using flashcards.
I learn best by reading aloud the texts.
I learn best by memorizing new words.
I learn best by staying up late in the night.
Then how do you learn best? Can you tell your partner how you learn best? Attention, class! To learn more about how others learn best let’s go to page 4. We are going to read something this time.
3a Reading and writing
We are going to read the article on page 4. First we shall read to the tape together. That is, we start reading aloud as the recorder goes, and we stop reading aloud as the recorder stops. While reading, let’s pay enough attention to the pauses, the pronunciation and the intonation of the native reader. Make our reading aloud as the same as the reader’s.
Next we are going to read aloud the article slowly and clearly. We will try to divide it into thought groups. We shall read the article once again, this time, to underline all the useful expressions in it. After school, you are going to write them down in your notebook.

Silence, please! We are going to have a role play in pairs. One of the pair is to be one of the people in 3a. The other is to interview him or her about learning English.
Zhao: Excuse me, Li Hong. Could you help me with my English?
Li: Yes, please. What’s the matter?
Zhao: I have difficulty studying grammar.
Li: Grammar? I never study grammar. I study English mostly by memorizing rules of English grammar.
