News elements 新闻要素新闻要素 Generally,news elements refer to the six key questions shortened as“5Ws and 1H”in a news report which the public is mostly concerned of and which the reporters stick to in writing the news.They are:“who”the event happened to or who acted on whom;“what”happened or will happen;“where”the action occurred;“when”it happened;“why”the action took place and“how”it happened(Itule&Anderson,2003:45).Reporters look for these six elements whenever they cover a news event in different social activities,such as political,economic,military,social and educational,etc.Their task is to gather facts to answer who,what,where,when,why and how,and it is through answering these questions that news articles are formulated by journalists and understood by readers.No matter what writing style is used and regardless of whether the contents are objectively descriptive or subjectively analytical,the readers curiosity has to be satisfied as regards the six elements of a newsworthy occurrence(MacDougall,1982:98).In journalistic practice,the most important of the six elements go into a summary lead.The less important elements go into the second and succeeding paragraphs.In most cases it would take too many words to try to put all six elements into one lead paragraph.
