13、 Spring is here. Did you plant trees on Tree-Planting Day? Everyone knows that climate change is a serious problem these days. People have a lot of work to do in order to prevent it. One of the best ways is to plant more trees.
According to a study by NASA, the Earth’s green leaf area has increased by 5 percent, or over 5 million square kilometers since 2000. China is responsible for 25 percent of the increase. That’s about one square of the size of the whole Amazon rainforest.
Over the past twenty years, China has made great efforts to green the land in order to fight soil erosion (水土流失) and air pollution. It is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert.
For example since 1962, China had been planting trees in Saihanba in Hebei province. It was once a barren(贫瘠) area. After overcoming many difficulties, foresters have turned the area into China’s largest man-made forest. Another example is the Kubuqi Desert, which is near the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia. It was once the source(来源) of sandstorms in Beijing. But now, about one third of the Kubuqi Desert is covered with trees, and sandstorms are less common. Mu Us Desert was also known for its sandstorms many years ago. But now, one-quarter of the desert has been turned into forest.
In a word, planting trees is really important to us. Let’s take part in planting trees to make our earth greener and more beautiful.

14、 Today, I want to tell you some stories from my life. The first story is about connecting the dots(小圆点). Reed College, the college I attended, offered perhaps the best calligraphy(书法) lessons in the country. Calligraphy was attractive to me, so I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I didn’t hope for any real use of this in my life. It was just a hobby. But ten years, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.
You might be very confused about the meaning of what you are doing now. But you have to believe the dots will somehow connect in the future. Every effort you make is worth the price. It will pay off in the end. This belief has never let me down, and it has made all the differences in my life.
My second story is about love and loss. Woz and I started Apple in a garage when I was 20. But later, I got fired(解雇). How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, it just happened. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was so hard for me.
But it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t been fired from Apple, I wouldn’t become who I am now. The loss completed me. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. What’s more, you have to find out what you love. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. You’ll know when you find it.

15、Do you like to eat sushi(寿司)? Many people are afraid to eat it, because they think the bacteria(细菌) in it might make them sick. However, a new study shows that sea bacteria are good for people. The study finds that a special enzyme(酶) from sea bacteria is helpful to humans. It helps people to get more energy from food.
To people’s surprise, the enzyme is present only in the Japanese. The Japanese traditionally like to eat food rich in seaweed(海藻). And the seaweed is rich in this kind of enzyme.
However, the enzyme isn’t present in all the Japanese. During the study, just 5 out of 14 Japanese had the enzyme. All the Americans studied didn’t have the enzyme.
“The number is small,” said researcher Mirjam Czjzek. “But we can say that this enzyme is present only in the Japanese and not in the North Americans.”
Then some people think that maybe other people are able to get the enzyme if they eat a lot of seaweed. The study suggests that they collect uncooked seaweed to make their sushi.
Restaurant sushi is often cooked, which will destroy the enzyme. So, if you want to get that enzyme, you can travel to Japan to have a taste of the real sushi.

17、Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old kid should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖). He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, “I do not write for children. I write for people.”
