高一英语寒假作业(一) 第I卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分) 第二部分 阅读理解 第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A One day an American called Simon went to London to visit his friend, Rick. Rick told him that his flat was on the first floor. When he arrived, Simon went straight to the first floor of the building. But he was told that there was no Rick on that floor. Do you know why? In fact, the British call the first floor of a building the ground floor. The floor above the ground floor is the first floor, which Americans would call the second floor. The story shows that there are a few culture differences between Britain and America, though the British and Americans both speak English. The British usually hide their feelings. They seldom start a conversation with strangers. For example, on the train the British often spend their time reading newspapers or books. But Americans are quite different. They're more active and easier to talk with. The British and Americans may use different terms for many things. The British usually use football, rubber and post while Americans prefer to use soccer, eraser and mail. 21. Simon went to London to____. A. visit his friend B. spend his holiday C. study English D. have a meeting 22. According to the passage, the British usually spend their time____ on the train. A. playing cards B. talking loudly C. doing some reading D. singing and dancing 23. What's the best title for the passage? A. Differences in culture B. Simon's funny story C. Information abroad D. Hiding the feelings B Nobody is sure where and when the expression "apple-pie order" began. Some say that Scottish and English writers used the expression a long time ago. Others say it was first used in the northeastern American states known as New England. The housewives of New England cut their apples in even slices. Then they filled pie pans with them in an organized way, row(排)upon row. As one writer said, the women of New England loved to have everything in its place. This perhaps explains why it generally is believed that the expression "apple-pie order" began in New England. Another old expression, "apple of discord", es from ancient mythology(神话),however. The myth says that all the gods and goddesses were sitting around the table to celebrate the marriage of Thetis and Peleus. One of the goddesses-Discord-was a troublemaker. She threw away a golden apple on the table to be given as a prize to the most beautiful goddess. At one time, the tomato was called a love apple. That was a mistake. This is how the mistake happened: In the sixteenth century, Spain brought the tomato from South America after Spanish explorers had landed there. Spain then sold the tomato to Morocco. Italian traders carried it on to Italy. The Italian name for the tomato was "pomo di Moro"-apple of the Moors. When French growers brought it in from Italy, they thought "di Moro" meant"d'amour"-the French word for love. And so "pomo di Moro" became the apple of love. People believe many things about the apple. One belief is that it has great power of keeping people healthy. A very mon expression is "an apple a day keeps the doctor away. " Another belief is based on fact. The expression is "one rotten apple spoils the barrel. "When an apple begins to go bad, it ruins all the other apples around it in the container. The expression has e to mean that one bad person in a group can cause everyone to act bad. 24. Which of the following can we know about the phrase "apple-pie order"? A. Everyone is sure of where it began. B. No one knows for sure where and when it began. C. It began in New England. D. It has been put into use recently. 25. What's the meaning of "apple of discord"? Which of the following expressions is about health? A. One rotten apple spoils the barrel. B. Apple-pie order. C. Apple of discord. D. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. C Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words e from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word es from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America form Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We e from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers” Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world. Whether this story is true or not, it is certainly interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary. 28.Hamburg is . A. a kind of food B. a round piece of beef C. the name of a village D. a city in Germany 29. We know from the story that______________. A. few Americans like hamburgers B. hamburgers were made by Germans C. hamburgers are made with ham D. hamburgers were first sold about a century ago 30. Which of the following can often be found in any large English dictionary based on para3? A. Where all the words e from B. Where those Germans came from C. The reason why a word has a certain meaning D. The reason why English is spoken around the world 31. According to the story, the word “hamburger” es from_______. A. China because it has a long history B. England because Germans don’t speak good English C. the round pieces of beef which those people from Hamburg were eating D. the city of Hamburger in Germany D One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. You have to be with them in both good and bad times. In return, they will be there for you. But how can you be a good friend? Listen. Listen when they are talking. Keep eye contact. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes you're not required to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them. If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't bee their slave (奴隶). Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes as they may forget to take one. Have a few extra dollars in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them. Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and baking things are among the nicest things you can do for a friend when they are in hard times. Marilyn Monroe once said, "I'm selfish, impatient (急躁的) and a little insecure. I make mistakes, and I am out of control and at times hard to deal with. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you surely don't deserve (值得) me at my best. " Always remember this! If you don't want to deal with your friends when they're depressed, then you don't deserve to be with them during those parties where you have a good time! Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for an ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Make time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. These are the things you'll remember once you're all long graduated when looking back on your life ! 32. We can learn from the passage that _ .
