Widely used for thousands of years, Chinese fans not only are the perfect connection of use and beauty, but also show Chinese people’s high respect for their wonderful history and culture. With the development of history, there are many forms of fans.
The earliest Chinese fans, Zhang fan, which were big, appeared around the Shang Dynasty. The main use of them was to keep out the strong sun and protect people from the rain.
Although appearing in the Zhou Dynasty, feather (羽毛) fans weren’t loved by most people until the Three Kingdom Period. As is known to all, Zhuge Liang who was a smart and great man of Shu Han, was always holding a feather fan. The feather fan is a symbol of wisdom and appears in literature and paintings nowadays.
During the Han Dynasty, the cattail-leaf fans (香蒲扇) were invented. The cattail-leaf grew in the south and was a good material because it was not as expensive as feather fans. Even though it wasn’t beautiful, the cattail-leaf fan was popularized among common people soon.
In the Song Dynasty, fans in the shape of the moon, called “round” fan, became the favourite of young ladies. The fan was usually made of bamboo and white fine silk. Beautiful pictures were also embroidered (刺绣) on the face of the moon shaped fan. Its popularity even helped the development of painting itself. From the Song Dynasty on, fan painting became an independent art form.

My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

The helmet is really a kind of airbag. It is inside a large collar (衣领). People wear it around their neck like a scarf. When the rider falls off his or her bike, the collar quickly fills with air and an airbag appears around the head.
The two students, Anna Haupt and Terese Alstinat, wanted to change the way people ride bikes. They said, “Bicycle helmets have always been the same. They’re so bulky, like a hard mushroom (蘑菇) on the head.” They called their new invention the Hövding. The pair said it looked so cool that people would be happy to wear it.

They worked with a Swedish airbag company called Alva. And then the invisible helmet came out. Today, the two inventors have their own company that sells the new helmets. There are 17 workers in their company. They hope their helmet will change how people all over the world ride bikes.
In their video, Haupt and Alstinat said, “Cars are so yesterday. Bikes are the future.” People can not only take exercise but also experience the beauty of nature when they ride bikes. Protecting yourself from loud noise is a key part of ear care. Nowadays, it is common for people to listen to music with headphones on while traveling to school or work. Remember to choose over-the-ear headphones. This type can keep background noise out and allow you to have the volume lower. In-the-ear headphones are less effective at keeping background noise out.
