Nike, known for its shoes, has Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods on its team. Now it is lining up another sports tale: for US S 305 million, Nike is buying Converse, a 95-year-old footwear company and maker of the famous Chuck Taylor All Star shoe.
The deal, between the two US footwear giants (巨商),was announced last week, for cash and debt. Converse's athletic shoe will be the first to he marketed by Nike without bearing the Nike name.
It also opens a chapter for the financially troubled Convene, which affected the athletic footwear business for decades before involved into closing down in the early 1990’s.
Today, Converse is best known for its retro-style shoes, which have gained a big following recently among younger customers worldwide.
Converse and Nike represent two different types of shoes and prices.
Nike markets shoes and non-Nike products. It owns Cole Haan shoes, which are high-end shoes for men and women; it sells sports clothing for teenagers under the Hurley mark; and it owns Bauer Nike Hockey, a maker of hockey (曲棍球) equipment.
Last year, Nike had US % 10.7 billion in profit, while Converse reported US $205 million.
The addition of Converse could give Nike a way to sell shoes to discount stores and other merchants. Nike has kept its own brand out of them, for fear of darkening its brand name.
Convene invented basketball shoes in the early days of the game. Its “Chucks” got their name Chuck Taylor, a Converse salesman who traveled the country from the 1920s until the 1960s, promoting the game and selling shoes.
Over the past century, Converse1’s products are sold in over 12,000 sports stores around the world and through licensing agreements in over 100 countries. Converse has built a reputation for lower-priced and more traditional shoes.

Vinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists, it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan proved that. They found growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower.
The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate (醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar.
After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died.
It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help fanners in dry countries keep their crops alive. “In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize… and proved successful” Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.
Kim has already been in touch with people around the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from farmers to companies and amateur gardeners. “Now we are trying to cooperate with them to make a method to apply this system, and make the process as simple as possible,” he said. Hopefully this means the end of hunger caused by bad weather in the future.
