But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车) full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money? The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread. Now you’re inside and, of course, a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more. Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very cheap prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products. Customers usually connect red stickers with lower prices so the red stickers is easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women. There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye-level so you see these immediately. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids see them. Apart from what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to? In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It’s so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time (and money) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest it’s better to shop when it’s quieter, on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意), to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait. So, next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come with just the things you went for. 1.Supermarkets don’t provide baskets because ______. You play as the “mother” of a frog who lives alone and enjoys traveling. You need to prepare food and tools for his trips. The frog will send you postcards while he is away. The game’s popularity may have something to do with how lonely people are these days, according to the Xinhua News Agency. Many players have said that the lonely frog is just like them. But playing with the frog helps them forget their loneliness for a short time. Loneliness seems to be a common problem today. According to the Guardian, a British daily, about 40 percent of American adults say they’re lonely. And in the UK, about one in five people in the country are “always or often lonely”, the Telegraph reported. This might be why the UK government announced the country’s very first “Minister of Loneliness” (孤独大臣) in January. The minister’s job is to find ways to help UK citizens feel less lonely. The minister’s office will provide more money for activities that connect people together. This loneliness problem may be partly because of social media. When we see pictures of friends having fun or posting pictures on WeChat or Microblog, we may compare their “perfect” lives with our own and feel sad and lonely. But we should remember that no one is born to be lonely. As UK poet John Donne once wrote, “No man is an island. Every man is a piece of the land, a part of the main.” Here are some tips to get rid of loneliness: Sing your favorite songs. Connect with a friend. Do something creative, such as drawing a picture. Imagine some place you’d like to visit, like a fun gathering or a sporting event. 1.What do players do while playing Travel Frog? A.Build houses for their frogs. B.Write postcards to their frogs. C.Choose places for their frogs to travel. D.Prepare food and tools for their frogs’ trips. 2.According to the passage, why is the game so popular? A.Because the frog is lovely. B.Because it can be played on mobile phones. C.Because it makes people feel less lonely. D.Because people have more spare time now. 3.To deal with the problem of loneliness, the UK government . A.designed the game Travel Frog B.named the “Minister of Loneliness” C.held parties for people to get together D.stopped people’s use of social media 4.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.Everyone is connected with others. B.We should not compare ourselves to others. C.It’s not fun to feel lonely. D.We should be away from social media. C 15、I used to think courtesy (礼貌) was a thing of the past. However, I changed my mind when I met a courteous man. Last Saturday, I went to a cafe with my daughters. It was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb up the stairs to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were ready to come down the stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single line, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down. Just as I was in the middle of my descent (下去), a man got to the main entrance (入口) of the cafe which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed by the man who would want to go up in a hurry. Anyway, I kept coming down as fast as I could. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would get down before the stranger went up the stairs. Nearly getting down, I noticed the man still standing near the door. Later, I passed him at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. However, I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all of us felt bad for we did not even thank the courteous gentleman. 1.What can we learn from Paragraph 2? This year is your last chance your lifestyle to save the earth. Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth’s water and air, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour(倒) dangerous chemical(化学物品) and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees. By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted. People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids(液体). Scientists said that in the future there might be too many people on the earth. But not enough was done. So by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrible wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live. By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go? Nowhere. And everywhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our space ships. We are still looking for a place to call our home. So it is up to you to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late. 1.Which problem is NOT talked about in Paragraph 2?
