第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) With child behavior, there is almost much more than it meets the eye. Because it occurs at so many different levels, child behavior that seems simple at one level can often be much more complex and meaningful at another.
For instance, a little child’s pattern of getting into cupboards, drawers and closed rooms, even after being told not to, is easily considered as bad behavior. When viewed at that level, the pattern is unacceptable and could lead to punishment. But it can be viewed at a more complex and meaningful level, namely child exploration. If a child regularly experiences an angry parent who seems determined to prevent any exploratory activities, the child will decide to continue to achieve future discoveries. When parents view this behavior as born out of natural curiosity rather than simple opposition, they are more likely to accept and appropriately monitor it. Although it may lead to warning responses to ensure the child’s safety, it is less likely to lead to punishment.
There are countless other examples. Holding a goldfish outside its bowl is foolish at one level but also can be seen as a young child’s attempt to express physical affection for a pet. Spending time with friends rather than family is selfish at one level but also indicates a teen’s need for independence.
The point here is that child behavior is often exhibited in simple forms that can appear to be oppositional, selfish or generally unacceptable if viewed only at that basic level. However, when viewed at a more meaningful level, the same apparently simple behavior can be seen as something larger and potentially more adaptive. This doesn’t mean the behavior should be ignored, especially if it is inappropriate. But looking at the bigger picture of a child’s behavior, adults might gain a fuller understanding of what they’re dealing with, which can create more flexibility in how they respond.
1、According to Paragraph 1, we can know that child behavior ________.
A.is very changeable B.is inacceptable
C.occurs at different levels D.is fully understood by adults
2、The example in Paragraph 2 mainly shows that ________.
A.parents should properly punish child behavior
B.parents should keep children’s safety in mind
C.children’s behavior shows their interests
D.there are different attitudes to child behavior
3、What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.The child will insist on doing things with determination.
B.The child will have to make frequent decisions.
C.The child will make new discoveries in the future.
D.The child will develop a strong sense of achievement.
4、It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A.child behavior usually reflects a child’s need
B.what a child does can mean differently when seen from different aspects
C.children tend to do something to show their dependence to their parents
D.children spending time with friends show their selfishness
5、What does the writer suggest parents should do with a child’s behavior?
A.Have a positive attitude towards it.
B.Ignore the improper behavior.
C.View it at the basic level.
D.Watch over it from head to foot.
22.(8分) Are we alone in the universe? A team of scientists announced on January 6, 2015 that they had identified eight planets beyond our solar system, three or four of which orbit in their stars’ “Goldilocks Zone” — the region where temperatures are not too hot or too cold for water, which is a necessary ingredient for life as we know it, to exist liquid form. This may be good news for people hoping that Earth is not the only inhabited world in the universe.
The scientists, led by Dr. Guilermo Torres of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, made the discoveries using data collected by the planet-seeking Kepler telescope.
NASA launched Kepler in 2009. Since then, the telescope has identified more than 1,000 planets outside of our solar system. Torres and his team analyzed the data about the eight newly discovered world to determine which ones are most likely to be similar to our Earth.
Among the new discoveries, the scientists say the planets called Kepler438b and 442b are the closest to Earth. Kepler 438b is just about 10% larger than our planet, and gets 40% more of its energy from its star than Earth receives from the Sun. Temperatures there would be about 140 degrees. Kepler 442b is about 33% larger than Earth, but receives 30% less energy from its star. That would make it a potentially chillier world than our own. Torres says it is possible for life to exist and survive in either of those temperatures, but for that to happen, these planets would need to have another key ingredient for life: a heat-trapping atmosphere like Earth’s.
While these findings add to the possibility that life exists beyond Earth, Torres cautions against drawing conclusions, “We are not claiming they are inhabited,” he says. In fact, these planets are so far away that the scientists cannot observe them directly, which can be explanation for why for now it remains unknown whether these planets contain life. But the discovery of planets in their stars’ habitable zones suggests that somewhere out there, some form of alien life may have taken hold.
1、The scientists have identified eight planets, ________.
A.which are suitable for humans to live on
B.some of which are possible for life to exist on
C.some of which have the same situations as Earth
D.which are not too hot or too cold for water to exist on
2、Which statement about the discovery of Torres and his team is TRUE?
A.Kepler 438b is too hot for any life to exist on.
B.Kepler 438b and 442b are the farthest to Earth.
C.They have made the discoveries through Kepler.
D.They have discovered over 1000 planets in 7 years.
3、What is the possible thing that Kepler 442b lacks for life to exist on?
A.The water B.The sunlight
C.The soil D.The atmosphere
4、About their exploration, Torres wants to indicate that ________.
A.there is a lot left to learn
B.they have had decisive gains
C.it is the first in human history
D.it is certain for life on the planets
5、Which can be the best title for this passage?
A.Are We Alone?
B.Eye on the Stars
C.Discover Another Earth
D.Discovery of New Stars to Live on
23.(8分) A group of Canadian kids are already spreading a bit of Christmas spirit in Halifax,Nova Scotia, by wrapping warm clothing around lamp poles for the city’s homeless to pick up and use. The sight of warmly dressed poles caught recently the attention of locals, who stopped to click pictures to share on social media.
Every year, Tara Atkins collects warm clothing from her community, in order to give to the less fortunate. This year, she took to Facebook to call for donations and the response was strong—their front porch (门厅)was filled with bags of clothes. Since the family was traveling to Halifax on November 15 with their daughter Jayda and seven of her friends to celebrate her 8th birthday, Tara decided it was the perfect time to teach the children a valuable life lesson.
The kids spent time handing out coats to any homeless they met on the streets and tied the rest around lamp posts for o thers to pick up. According to Tara, the experience helped the children better understand the difficult situation of homeless people having to confront the severe winter on the s treets.
There is no way to be sure that the coats left hanging on street posts were actually picked up by the homeless, but Tara says she isn’t too worried about that. By next morning, all the jackets and scarves on the posts were gone. Photographs of the inspiring project have been shared about 8,000 times on Facebook, and got over 10,000 likes. Tara, who did something similar in Toronto in December last year, says she’s already planning next year’s coat drive. She’s hoping to spread the word well ahead of time, so more people can contribute. And she also wants to add $ 5 fast food gift cards so the recipients (接受者)can also enjoy a hot meal. “We’ve had help from others when we were in need, and we knew how great it made us feel,” said Zachary Atkins, Tara’s husband.
1、How did locals respond at the sight of the warmly dressed poles?
A.They got confused.
B.They were annoyed.
C.They took photos and spread the news.
D.They unwrapped and put on the clothes.
2、Why did Tara Atkins go to Halifax on November 15?
A.To go sightseeing.
B.To celebrate Jayda’s birthday.
C.To collect warm clothing for the homeless.
D.To spend the holiday with family.
3、What does the underlined word “confront” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Face. B.Discuss.
C.Enjoy. D.Describe.
4、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Tara is sure that the coats will be picked up by the homeless.
B.People responded warmly to the photographs on Facebook.
C.Tara is appealing to the government to donate.
D.Zachary Atkins is against what Tara has done.
24.(8分)American Rosalie Stoke is one of the millions of college students with a bright future ahead of her. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She studies chemical engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech. But the 22 year-old’s path to college was very different from the majority of Americans like her.
In the United States,it is common for young people to complete four years of high school at age 17 or 18. After they finish high school in the spring, those who decide to attend college usually do so two-to three-months later. However, Stoke learned about a different way of doing things from an older student. That student said that before going to college, she worked for a year helping with childcare for a family in Germany. This idea appealed to Stoke very much.
Stoke is in her third year of studies at Virginia Tech. She took a gap year in 2013. “It just sounded like a really great idea to have a year off to figure out more of what I wanted to do in college and after,” she said. So, after finishing high school in 2013, Stoke decided she also wanted to take a gap year before starting college.
In fall 2013, Stoke connected with a family in Barcelona, Spain. They agreed to let her live with them and paid her a small amount to help care for their children for seven months. Stoke studied Spanish during her free time in Barcelona. She then used money as well as money from her parents to travel for two months.
Stoke said that she felt different when she returned to the United States to begin her studies at Virginia Tech in 2014. She said she felt at ease and that she knew more about herself as a person. Also, when talking with friends who went straight to college from high school, she found many had a difficult time in their first year of college.
1、Where is Stoke unique compared with most high school students?

2、How did Stoke determine her style of college education?
A.She did it quite by accident.
B.She wanted to put off her college graduation.
C.She was not satisfied with the traditional way.

3、What did Stoke and the older student have in common?
A.They both studied Spanish in their free time.
B.They both worked for a Germany family.
C.They both looked after kids for others.
D.They both studied at Virginia Tech.
4、What was Stoke’s attitude towards her experience before college?
A.Cautious. B.Confident.
C.Ambiguous. D.Regretful.
