The Harvard school of Greduate Education, along with 80 other schools and organizations, released a report called "Turning the Tide Making Caring Common” in January, 2016. The report argues that the process schools use to choose students causes major problems. David Hawkins is the Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy at the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Hawkins told Voice of America that most colleges and universities require many things from students when they apply. Schools usually ask for an essay describing a student's interests or why they want to study at that school. The schools also ask for letters from teachers or other responsible adults describing why a student is a good candidate. But, Hawkins says, the area that schools are most concerned about is a student's high school grades and standardized test results. The report suggests that paying attention to academic success over other qualities works well for some students but hurts others. In addition, academic success is not the most important quality a student should have. More attention should be paid to showing whether or not a student wants to do well in the world, according to the report. The report goes on to state that the best way to change the admissions process is by changing college applications. It suggests that schools should ask for evidence that students care about other people. But the report does have its critics. Bob Schaeffer, Public Education Director for the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, said that every few years, someone makes the same argument for changes, but no real change has happed yet. Even many of the schools that agree with the report still make no changes. Lloyd Thacker, Executive Director of the Education Conservancy, said that until a majority of schools agree to make the changes, there will still be problems. However, he said, the admissions process was better in the past. If bad changes can affect the process, so can good ones. 1、What is the problems of the admissions process according to the report? A.The schools ask too many things from the applying students. B.The schools attach too much importance to students’ academic records C.The number of students getting admitted is too small D.Admissions officers consider too many unimportant factors 2、What is usually missing in an essay? A.The reasons to attend the school B.A description of interests C.Recommendation letters from adults D.Evidence that students care about others 3、Bob Schaeffer argues that _________. A.not all changes are good B.the largest schools are expected to make changes first C.no schools currently agree with the report D.some schools don’t make changes even if they agree 4、What’s Lloyd Thacker’s attitude toward the possible change in the admissions process? A.Confident B.Negative C.Doubtful D.Unclear 22.(8分)Samanta Schweblin, one of the best young Spanish language novelists nominated (提名) by British literary magazine Granta, has visited Beijing to promote the first Chinese edition of a collection of her short stories. The collection, Birds in the Mouth, has been translated and published by Shanghai-based publisher Reader. “Sometimes I hold the Chinese edition and choose a story at random and try to guess which one it is. But it is almost impossible for me; even the length is different.” says Schweblin. “When a book is translated into a Western language, I can at least understand some parts of my stories, and therefore suffer some doubt about the quality of the translation. But my Chinese edition is more like an act of faith.” Born in Argentina in 1978, Schweblin says she is influenced by the literary traditions of the La Plata area, home to many famous Latin-American novelists. Interested in writing stories of ordinary lives where suddenly something extraordinary happens, something new, strange or unknown, she thinks, “The stranger and the unknown are not always related to ghosts or aliens, but can be something related to the known world, something that actually could happen.” Birds in the Mouth tells of a divorced father who worries about his 13-year-old daughter and her mysterious appetites. It turns out that his daughter eats live birds. The idea for this story came to Schweblin when she was browsing the Internet, “Click, click, click, a picture of a little girl who looks frightened with her hands covering her mouth came to my eyes. Little by little, I developed the story in my mind, and then wrote it down” recalls Schweblin. Although there are elements of violence and bloodiness in Schweblin’s stories, she skillfully hides them, thinking the trick to writing a thrilling story is to stop the monster from appearing, while maintaining a frightening and mysterious atmosphere. 1、Samanta Schweblin came to China to ________. A.pay a visit to Beijing B.translate her stories into Chinese C.help to make her book more popular D.publish her collection 2、When mentioning her Chinese edition, Schweblin thinks ________. A.a textbook B.a newspaper C.a report D.a science fiction 23.(8分)A study of 500,000 songs released(发行)in the UK between 193 and 2015 showed that pop music has decreased in happiness and increased in sadness. In a report published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, researchers at the University of California examined hundreds of thousands of songs and classified them by their mood."‘Happiness’is going down,‘sadness’ is going up,and at the same time, the songs are becoming more ‘danceable’ and more ‘party-like,’"co-author Natalia L.Komarova told The Associated Press. The study found songs in 2014 like "Stay With Me"by Sam Smith,"Whispers" by Passenger and "Unmissable" by Gorgon City to have a "low happiness" trend. However, tracks from 193 like "Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen,"Would I Lie To You?" by Eurythmics and "Freedom"by Wham had a high "happiness" trend."The public seems to prefer happier songs, even though more and more unhappy songs are being released each year," the researchers wrote. Apart from the emotional trends, researcheis discovered that dance and pop were the most successful styles of music and that there was a "clear downward trend",with the popularity oF rock beginning in the early 2000s."So it looks like, while the overall mood is becoming less happy, people seem to want to forget it all and dance," Komarova wrote in an email. It was also found that the "maleness" of songs——the frequency of male singers in popular music——had decreased during the last 30 years "Successful songs are characterised by a larger percentage of female artists compared to all songs,"they Wrote. This discovery appears at a time when the convcrsation around sex equality in the music industry is at its height, with more male artists and songwriters. 1、The researchers examined lots of songs to . First of all, what is style? Let’s hear a few words of wisdom from the wise. “Style is knowing who you are and what you want to say,” (Gore Vidal); “Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charm,” (John Fairchild); “Style is the perfection of a point of view,” (Robert Eberhart); “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things,” (Jean Cocteau); “Style is the dress of thoughts,” (Lord Chesterfield). So, now you know what style is, you’ll need to buy some clothes. But where? In the UK, you can get really cheap, stylish, second-hand clothes at charity shops. They’re great if you want exclusive labels but don’t want to pay the price. The only difficulty is discovering where the really good bargains are. But don’t worry, Leila Gray can help you here. She’s the proud owner of a vintage Hardy Amies coat, picked up at a charity shop for £3---a good deal when you realize it cost more than £800 new. “You have to go to the richer areas of a city,” she says. “That’s where all the labels are. It can take a bit of hunting around, but that is half the fun, and there’s a lot of buried treasure just waiting to be discovered.” So, now you know where to buy your new, stylish clothes, how do you acquire your style? Experts say that mixing and matching from charity shops can help you find your own style----something that’s really you. That’s what Scottish musician Morus did. “My fashion tip is this,” he says, “Look at yourself with the eye of a graphic designer. If you can’t be attractive, aim for ‘interesting’ or ‘original’.” Momus’ unique style could even make him happier, too. As psychologist Marilyn Elias explains, the happiest people “judge themselves by their own yardsticks, never against what others do or have”. Shoichi Aoki, the founder of Japanese street style magazine FRUiTS, agrees. “I think real fashion is what people wear on the streets, the clothes that they wear, the way that they wear them,” he says. “What you see in fashion magazines and on models has been styled and it’s more commercial.” He says that his inspiration for FRUiTS came from people combining traditional Japanese clothing such as the kimono and “geta” (Japanese wooden clogs) with Western fashion. “This really caught my eye,” Aoki adds. These styles may seem wild, but Aoki’s idea is not: be bold, be creative and find something that suits you. Maybe it’s time to create your own look. There are many online guides to help you. Perhaps the best advice comes from a website called wikiHow, “If you see something you like,” it says, “feel free to copy, but don’t make yourself a clone… mix it up and make it yours.” Think about it! 1、What should you first do to choose they style that best suits you? A.Follow the images of the wise people. B.Go for whatever is fashionable. C.Simplify complicated expressions. D.Figure out what a true style is. 2、What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Getting clothes of leading brands. B.Buying clothes at rather low prices.
