21.(6分) Roughly the size of a soda can, sitting on a bookshelf, a relatively harmless device(设备) may be turning friends away from your home. The elephant in your living room is your Internet-connected camera, a device people are increasingly using for peace of mind in their homes. But few stop to think about the effect these devices may have on house guests. Should you tell your friends, for instance, that they’re being recorded while you all watch the big game together?
"It’s certainly new territory, especially as home security cameras become easier to fix," says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America’s distinguished manners advisors. " I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it’s not a security issue. "Post wants to make clear that she’s not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference.
When it comes to security cameras, Post says it’s a host’s responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. If the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in the room by telling a story about it, that may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable.
However, if a contractor(合约工)is working in your home, you don’t need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the camera can also work in contractors’ favor. "If anything does go wrong while they’re in the house, they don’t want to be blamed for it," she says. "In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn’t steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table.
1、The visitors are concerned that the security camera may .
A.threaten their health B.spoil their peace of mind
C.disturb their privacy D.affect their preference
2、What is a host’s responsibility concerning the security camera?
A.Indicating its position. B.Making their guests feel at ease
C.Turning it oil in time. D.Having a casual talk with guests.
3、How can the home security camera benefit contractors working in your home?
A.It can prevent the accidents happening. B.It can prove their innocence.
C.It can record their working progress. D.It can make their work more enjoyable.
4、What’s the author’s attitude towards the security camera?
A.Negative. B.Pessimistic. C.Favorable. D.Objective
22.(8分) Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A singlesyllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 nonChinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study,Patrick C.M.Wong,said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.

23.(8分)If you feel yourself turning into an old grouch(脾气坏的人), don’t worry — happiness is just around the bend. A survey has found that although happiness dips in those in their 30s and 40s, people start to feel more content with life after the age of 50.
However an economist found that older people will never again regain the excitement of youth. Rather it is thought that with age, individuals become more pragmatic about the ups and downs that life brings and accept their fortune.
He questioned those in Britain, Switzerland and Germany and applied the findings to people’s life cycle.
Mr. Van Landeghem, 29, said:“A happiness curve does not necessarily imply that a 65-year-old prefers his own life to the life of a 25-year-old.”
“Both the 25-year-old and 65-year-old might agree that it is nicer to be 25 than to be 65. But te 65-year-old might nevertheless be more satisfied, as he has learned to be satisfied with what he has.”
It was suggested the mid-life happiness dip is because this is when people have the most responsibilities — taking care of a family, paying a mortgage (抵押贷款) and having a demanding career. The middle-aged dip in happiness was also compared to that of losing a close relative or suddenly becoming unemployed.
The study is just one of many put forward as an indicator of what makes for a happy life.
Psychologists concluded that having money makes you happier, but only if you have a lot more than your friends and neighbors. At the same time, you’d better have enough tie to enjoy yourself instead of spending all your time on making money.
Separate research found that owning the house of your dreams, the car you always longed for and having millions in the bank doesn’t stop that desire to keep up with the Joneses (攀比). And if the Joneses have more than you do, you’ll be miserable. It seems envy at being lower in the social pecking order (权势等级) reduces the satisfaction of being well off.
If you just do what you love and you are good at, which society also values much, you may have a higher probability to be happy. But if your job pays less, how can you stick to it in disregard of responsibilities? Happiness means different things from different points of view, and point of view grows from one’s experience and knowledge. Perhaps it comes with you when you don’t need to think about adult problems or when you are wise enough to understand what satisfaction is.

24.(8分)Imagine having an idea, drawing it on paper, bring it to a store and seeing it turned into an object. This is new possible with the help of 3D printers. Such machines were once used just by universities and big companies, but now, stores with 3D printing services are appearing around the United States.
Bryan Jaycox and his wife opened The Build Shop LLC in Los Angeles two years ago. The Jaycoxs offer 3D printing classes and services for anyone who is interested. “I think 3D printing is going to be huge. It’s going to have a huge influence on society as a whole.” says KiChong Tran, one of the students in a recent class. He plans to open a 3D printing business in Cambodia.
3D printing services are coming into American people’s life. The UPS Store is a nationwide retailer that provides copying and other services. The UPS Store recently put 3D printers in three of its independently-owned stores. Burke Jones owns one of the stores in San Diego. “The demand has been amazing. There has been a lot of interest from people. It’s been much more than I would have imagined.” The UPS Store plans to add 3D printers in three more stores.
At the UPS Store, the cost of the object depends partly on the amount of materials used. The store also changes up to $95 an hour to design the object with computer software that creates a digital file to guide the printer. Mr Jaycox thinks that within five years, 3D printing technology could become more consumer-friendly. But KiChong Tran says even today’s technology can make a difference in a developing country like Cambodia. “With 3D printing you can give them tools, so they are responsible more for their own development and they learn skills beyond just like learning English and becoming a tour guide or something like that. You can actually create things that give value to the world.” He says it’s not just Cambodia but anywhere where there is a 3D printer, it can turn a good idea into reality.
