That means you can mail your letters to Santa about 6 weeks sooner than that last year. Santa knows you’ve been good and wants to make sure he and his helpers receive your wish list earlier. Eight post offices are organized across Germany to answer all the letters children send. This year they plan to receive over 250,000 letters. Though the letters fly from over 80 different countries, Santa and his helpers can understand and make sure to answer all the letters. In 1984, two children from Berlin sent their wish lists to Himmelpfort after spending their vacation there. Their letters were answered by postal employees and later Himmelpfort increased its helpers to meet the needs of increased mail traffic. Year after year, Santa and his crew use an eco-friendly powered vehicle to collect the thousands of letters they receive from young boys and girls. The great news for this year is that if you come to the beautiful town of Himmelpfort, you can drop off your letter and visit Santa in person, from Tuesdays to Thursdays until Christmas Eve. Santa does not currently have an e-mail, Twitter or a Facebook account. He believes in old-fashioned communication. So get out your paper and write your wish list. Just make sure your letter is clear so you can receive an official response. Send your letters to Santa Christmas Post Office Himmelpfort Germany 298 1、This year Santa and his helpers . If a person stays in the same room the following night they tend to sleep more soundly. Yuka Sasaki and her colleagues at Brown University set out to investigate the origins of this effect. Dr. Sasaki knew the first-night effect probably has something to do with how humans evolved. The puzzle was what benefit would be gained from it when performance might be affected the following day. She also knew from previous work conducted on birds and dolphins that these animals put half of their brains to sleep at a time so that they can rest while remaining alert enough to avoid predators (捕食者). This led her to wonder if people might be doing the same thing. To take a closer look, her team studied 35 healthy people as they slept in the unfamiliar environment of the university’s Department of Psychological Sciences. The participants each slept in the department for two nights and were carefully monitored with techniques that looked at the activity of their brains. Dr. Sasaki found, as expected, the participants slept less well on their first night than they did on their second, taking more than twice as long to fall asleep and sleeping less overall. During deep sleep, the participants’ brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dolphins. On the first night only, the left hemispheres (半球) of their brains did not sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did. Curious if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake to process information detected in the surrounding environment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix of regularly timed beeps (蜂鸣声) of the same tone and irregular beeps of a different tone during the night. She worked out that, if the left hemisphere was staying alert to keep guard in a strange environment, then it would react to the irregular beeps by stirring people from sleep and would ignore the regularly timed ones. This is precisely what she found. 1、What do we learn about Dr. Yuka Sasaki doing her research? A.She found birds and dolphins remain alert while asleep. B.She found birds and dolphins sleep in much the same way. C.She got some idea from previous studies on birds and dolphins D.She conducted studies on birds’ and dolphins’ sleeping patterns. 2、What did Dr. Sasaki do when she first did her experiment? A.She monitored the brain activity of participants sleeping in a new environment. B.She recruited (招募) 35 participants from her Department of Psychological Sciences. C.She studied the differences between the two sides of participants’ brains. D.She tested her findings about birds and dolphins on human subjects. 3、What did Dr. Sasaki do when re-running her experiment? A.She analyzed the negative effect of irregular tones on brains. B.She recorded participants’ adaptation to changed environment. C.She exposed her participants to two different stimuli (刺激物). D.She compared the responses of different participants. 4、What did Dr. Sasaki find about the participants in her experiment? A.They tended to enjoy certain tones more than others. B.They tended to recognize irregular beeps as a threat. C.They felt sleepy when exposed to regular beeps. D.They differed in their tolerance of irregular tones 23.(8分) Peter Skyllberg, a Swedish man, was trapped in his car for two months, with temperatures reaching -30oC, with no food or water, and yet he survived. The best explanation was that his vehicle created an “igloo (snow house) effect” and protected him from the extremely low temperatures and that his body would hibernate(冬眠) during this time. Can humans get into a low-energy consumption state like a bear by reserving energy, and reducing body temperature? Chinese scientists are looking for the key to regulating body temperature. Scientists have found the hypothalamus (下丘脑), an area in the central lower part of the brain, is responsible for regulating body temperature. Wang Hong, a brain scientist at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led her team to mark the neurons (神经元) responsible for regulating body temperature in mice by means of a cutting-edge genetic biology technique. In the experiments, they injected (注射) drug into mice to make the body temperatures of the mice drop rom 37C to 27 in two hours. The team found the change in body temperature caused no harm to the health of the mice. “We don’t know if we can develop a drug that can control human body temperature. We still need a lot of study.” Wang said. Chinese scientists are not alone in such research. Body-cooling techniques are being used in pioneering hospitals around the world. Dutch doctors are now using low temperatures for patients who have suffered brain injuries in accidents, According to doctors working in Florence, it may even help to save the brains of babies who are born suffering from severe epileptic fits (癫痫病发作). 1、Why does the author mention Peter Skyllberg? A.To tell an amazing story. B.To introduce the topic. C.To teach survival skills. D.To explain “igloo effect”. 2、What did Wang Hong’s team find in the experiment? A.Genetic biology technique helped a lot. B.A drug could control human body temperature. C.The mice’s health wasn’t damaged by the change of body temperature. D.Hypothalamus was responsible for regulating body temperature. 3、How can body-cooling techniques help people? A.Brain injuries may be treated properly B.People trapped in snow can survive. C.Patients with epileptic fits will be cured. D.Medical accidents can be avoided. 4、The text is probably taken from . A.a biology textbook B.a science fiction C.a survival brochure D.a medical magazine 24.(8分)Welcome to Inspire 21! Our aim is to provide ”Inspiring words for the 21st century”. Three years ago, my family and I were invited to a house warming party. My son, who didn't know how to swim, accidentally fell into the swimming pool while he was playing with the other kids around the pool side area. He looked at me and shouted for help continuously, scared to death. I felt so helpless as I wasn't able to swim as well. I decided to sign my son as well as myself up for private swimming lesson through Happy Fish Swim School. The instructor was patient and friendly and helped my son overcome his phobic of water. Now, my entire family is able to swim and we still head to the pool every week!
