21.(6分) “Don’t answer it,” I said to Sam. Our door in the inner city is constantly knocked on; our previous door in the suburbs rarely so. Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank.
Sam opened the door and it was Mervin.
“There’s a bird on the second floor,” he said. “It’s in trouble.”
Sam followed Mervin upstairs. Mervin pointed and turned to let Sam look. It was a pigeon, the most common of all birds, the bird most likely to foul (弄脏) your newly washed car. And
it wasn’t flying away. It was stamping in circles. As Sam bent to look, Mervin coughed, “Number two.”
Sam asked him to repeat that. “Number two,” Mervin said. "The pigeon has been sitting in his own number two, and now it’s stuck to his foot.”
It had rained for five days, and the bird was young. It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away. The pigeon moved in a few more circles. Sam bent to take another look. Mervin said, “All right, then.” and walked away.
“Why does everyone think you must solve the problems around here?” I said to Sam when he returned with his story. “It’s a bird. Just leave it on the stairs, and let nature take its course.” Sam didn’t agree. Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it.
They put its foot in the warm water bath and got rid of its waste. Immediately the pigeon erupted in a bomb of feathers and began flying.

2、Why was the pigeon moving in circles?
A.It was learning to fly.
B.It was badly injured.
C.It got caught in the rain.
D.It was trapped by its waste.
3、What did Sam use the cardboard box to do?
A.Shelter from rain.

D.Make a nest for the bird.
4、What can we learn about Sam from the text?
A.He was brave. B.He was clever.
C.He was warm-hearted. D.He was easy-going.
22.(8分) Depression and suicidal thoughts have doubled in young Americans, according to a new study from the American Psychological Association.
Likely triggers? Cell phones and social media.
“More US adolescents and young adults in the late 20s, vs the mid-10s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression and more attempted suicide (自杀)”, says lead researcher Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University. “These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across all ages.”
Twenge believes this trend is partially due to the explosion of digital culture over the past decade, which may have twisted modes of social interaction enough to affect mood disorders.
The study analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which tracked drug and alcohol use and mental health issues in more than 1,000 youths aged 12 to 17 from 15 to 27 and almost 400,000 adults from 18 to 27.
Major depression in the last 12 months increased by 52 percent in kids from 15 to 27 and 63 percent in young adults aged 18 to 25 from 19 to 27. There was also a 71 percent jump in young adults experiencing serious psychological distress in the previous 30 days from 18 to 27.
So what’s so different now? Twenge says research shows young people just aren’t getting as much shuteye as they did in previous generations.
Whereas older Americans might have established more stability in their lives, sleep-disrupting social stressors are likely at their peak for teens and young adults in this digital era, she says. Older adults are also less likely to let devices interfere (干预) with sleep.
These results suggest a need for more research to understand how digital communication versus face-to-face social interaction influences mood disorders and to develop specialized interventions for younger age groups.
Her suggestion? Put your phone down at least an hour before bedtime.
1、How is Paragraph 6 developed?
A.By stating facts. B.By giving examples.

3、What do the underlined words “social stressors” in Para 8 mean?

Flora Harris had made the neighbor swear she wouldn’t tell her daughter she’d had a heart attack and was in hospital. The neighbor wisely decided to disobey orders.
Amanda desperately wanted to get to the hospital immediately, but she couldn’t. She lives in Washington D.C., and her mother lives in California. For the past year and a half, Amanda has gone to Los Angeles every other month to take care of her mother. Flora Harris takes care of her husband, James, who’s 91 and has Alzheimer’s disease. 25.(10分)Educators across the US are calling for major changes to the admissions process in higher education. The Harvard school of Greduate Education, along with 80 other schools and organizations, released a report called "Turning the Tide Making Caring Common” in January, 2016. The report argues that the process schools use to choose students causes major problems.
David Hawkins is the Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy at the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Hawkins told Voice of America that most colleges and universities require many things from students when they apply. Schools usually ask for an essay describing a student's interests or why they want to study at that school. The schools also ask for letters from teachers or other responsible adults describing why a student is a good candidate. But, Hawkins says, the area that schools are most concerned about is a student's high school grades and standardized test results.
The report suggests that paying attention to academic success over other qualities works well for some students but hurts others. In addition, academic success is not the most important quality a student should have. More attention should be paid to showing whether or not a student wants to do well in the world, according to the report.
The report goes on to state that the best way to change the admissions process is by changing college applications. It suggests that schools should ask for evidence that students care about other people. But the r
