第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) Everybody hates it, but everybody does it. A recent report said that 40%of Americans hate tipping. In America alone, tipping is a $ 16 billion-a-year industry. Consumers acting politely ought not to pay more than they have to for a given service. Tips should not exist. So why do they? The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality. And also, tipping makes for closer relations. It went without saying that the better the service, the bigger the tip.
But according to a new research from Cornell University, tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes numbers they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants. The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak. Only a tiny part of the size of the tip had anything to do with the quality of service.
Tipping is better explained, by culture than by the money people spend. In America, the custom came into being a long time ago. It is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. In New York restaurants, failing to tip at least 15% could well mean dissatisfaction from the customers. Hairdressers can expect to get l5%-20%, and the man who delivers your fast food $ 2. In Europe, tipping is less common. In many restaurants the amount of tip is decided by a standard service charge. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all. Only a few have really taken to tipping. According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell papers’ author, countries in which people are more social or outgoing tend to tip more. Tipping may reduce anxiety about being served by strangers. And Mr. Lynn says, “In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you. Tipping well is a chance to show off.”
1、This passage is mainly about .
A.different kinds of tipping in different countries
B.the relationship between tipping and custom

D.been permitted
3、Among the following situations, in your opinion, who is likely to tip most?
A.A Frenchman just quarreled with the barber who did his hair badly in New York.
B.An American just had a wonderful dinner in a well known restaurant in New York.
C.A Japanese businessman asked for a pizza delivery from a Pizza Hut in New York.
D.A Chinese student enjoyed his meal in a famous fast food restaurant in New York.
4、We can infer from this passage that .
A.tipping is no longer a good way to satisfy some customers themselves
B.tipping is especially popular in New York
C.tipping in America can make service better now
D.tipping has something to do with people’s character
22.(8分)It's comforting to think if you were somehow swallowed by a whale, you'd simply hang out in his stomach until he eventually spat you out, unharmed and whole. Unfortunately, your chance of ending up in this type of situation is pretty low.
In 2012 reporter Ben Shattuck read the records at the New Bedford Whaling Museum Research Library. Despite his extensive research at one of the most comprehensive whaling archives(档案), he failed to find a single report of anyone ever being swallowed alive by a whale. He found plenty of reports of whalers who were bitten or injured by the creatures, and several who died after fighting with a whale, but none related to swallowing.
With whales' large mouths, it certainly seems possible that a whale could swallow someone whole, so why is it so unlikely? Baleen whales, or whales without teeth, are some of the largest creatures on the planet. Despite their massive size, baleen whales could never get you into their bellies thanks to their relatively small esophagus(食道). These whales are designed to eat small sea creatures, and the opening in their throat is only about as large as a baske tball, so you'd never make it that far.
But what about toothed whales? Sperm whales eat whole seals, so you could easily fit down their throats and into their stomachs. However, once you reached the first of the sperm whale's four stomachs, your journey would probably end quickly. Not only would the whale's stomach acid make quick work of you, but you'd experience a distinct lack of air on the inside. Actually, you're more likely to get eaten or injured as you try to make it past the sperm whale's sharp teeth. Plenty of whalers, have fought with sperm whales and lost their hands or lives due to these mean teeth.
1、What did Ben Shattuck's research in 2012 show?
A.Many people had been killed by whales.

3、What is the most likely tool for sperm whales to injure humans?
A.Their throats.
B.The four stomachs.
C.The inside of the stomach.
D.The mean teeth.
4、What may be the best tide for the text?
A.Will Whales Kill Humans?
B.Can Whales Swallow People Alive?
C.Do Whales only Eat Small Creatures?
D.How Can People Research on Whales?
23.(8分)China became the first country to clone a monkey using non-reproductive cells, reducing the need to breed lab monkeys and paving the way for more accurate, effective and affordable animal tests for new drugs, scientists said on Thursday .
By December, the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Academy of Sciences had created two clone macaques(猕猴) named”Zhong Zhong” and “Hua Hua” by nuclear transferring of somatic cells(体细胞)-any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells.
Tetra, a monkey born in 1999, is the world's first cloned monkey, but it was done by using a simpler method called embryo splitting(胚胎分割); but it could only generate four cloned offspring at a time and cannot be genetically changed to suit the experimental need.
Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类) that shares its genetic makeup, and therefore all of its complexity, with humans.
For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly and bad for the environment, and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes.
By cloning monkey using somatic cells, we can massively cultivate large numbers of genetically identical offspring in a short amount of time, and we can even change their genes to suit our needs. This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine.
Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different
“Monkeys and humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans,”he said. This is especially useful in testing drugs for neural(神经的) diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic syndrome(代谢综合症) and immune system diseases, and tumors, he added.
“This achievement will help China lead the world research in the international science projects related to neural mapping of primate brains, "he said. "However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, and European countries are also very capable, and they will quickly catch up with China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, "Sun added.
“This means we have to innovate continuously and work extra hard this year to stay ahead," he said.
1、Which of the following is the most important factor in cloning macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua"?
A.Reproductive cells. B.Somatic cells
C.Neural mapping. D.Genetic makeup
2、Why is cloning monkeys so difficult?
A.Because it is bad for our environment.
B.Because each monkey might have different genes.
C.Because monkeys' genetic makeup is as complicated as humans.
D.Because it is too expensive to work on their genetic makeup.
3、What is the main idea of Paragraph 8?
A.The cure for neural diseases.
B.The process of cloning monkeys.
C.The significance of cloning monkeys.
D.The close relations between monkeys and humans.
4、What can we infer from this passage?
A.More effective medicine will be produced.
B.Drug trials on lab mice will be abandoned.
C.China is the first country to have cloned monkeys.
D.China will stay ahead of the world in cloning.
24.(8分) For centuries, people have tried to invent a perfect universal written language and Chinese has actually been considered before. Francis Bacon used to assume that a language like Chinese and its writing system would have qualified. Chinese doesn’t use an alphabet based on sounds, but symbols indicating meaning.
Chinese character has its special relationship between the sign and what it symbolized. Each character represents a word or a concept and you pile them up together like Lego bricks, children’s plastic building toys, to build more words. Some of them also look like what they represent. For example, a mountain may look just like a mountain with a peak in the middle. And fire resembles some blazing (燃烧的) logs. When you put them together and you get volcano. Isn’t that amazing?
While some of them look like what they represent, most of them really don’t. In fact, some of them are incredibly complicated. For instance, “Biang” is the name of a kind of noodle, which has 57 strokes (笔画). It is very hard for people to pronounce or recognize this character, let alone writing it out correctly. Chinese is so complicated that since the 1950s, a simplified system of characters has been used in mainland China. But there is a problem. Chinese characters often represent whole works, and there are a lot of them. In the Chinese dictionary there are around sixty four thousand characters.
So Chinese characters might not become a universal writing system soon. The trouble is not just inventing one, but getting people to use it. It wouldn’t be easy for the whole world to agree on the same set of meanings. After all, language needs a cultural context. You cannot really just use a universal language as you like.
1、What can we learn from Francis Bacon?
A.He believed that Chinese writing system was perfect.
B.He managed to invent a universal written language.
C.He recommended Chinese to use alphabets based on sounds.
D.He thought written Chinese language could be used globally.
2、How does the author explain the characteristic of Chinese character?
A.By analyzing structures of toys. B.By comparing concepts.
C.By giving examples. D.By collecting data.
3、Why do Chinese people use a simplified system of Chinese characters?
A.It is hard to pronounce Chinese characters.
B.It is difficult to recognize or write Chinese characters.
C.It is fashionable to use simplified Chinese characters.
D.It is complicated to look up Chinese characters in the dictionaries.
4、What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to write simplified Chinese characters.
B.Why people need a universa
