22.(8分)Three divers enter a hole leading to a water-filled cave on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. They swim for an hour. Finally, they reach a large room 60 feet underground and about the size of two basketball courts. Here, they discover an upside-down human skull (the bones of a person’s head). Other bones lay nearby.
The team came across the skull in 2007. The divers then told the Mexican government about the finding. Soon the government formed a team of scientists to look into it. The group, which included archaeologist (考古学家) Dominique Rissolo, believed that the skull belonged to someone who lived in the last ice age. At the ice age’s height some twenty thousand years ago, sea levels dropped and new land appeared. Over time, rain and wind ate holes into some of the land.
“The person may have died after entering the cave,” Rissolo says. Then, when the ice age ended some ten thousand years ago, sea levels rose. Water flooded the cave, covering the remains.
Worrying that moving the skull might destroy it, scientists decided to examine it at its watery resting place. They collected information about the skull and other pieces of bones. They found that the bones belonged to a 15- to 17-year-old girl who lived at least twelve thousand years ago. The team named her Naia after some sea creatures in Greek myths.
Naia is the oldest nearly complete human skeleton (骨架) ever found in the Americas. DNA tests showed that she’s a direct ancestor of present-day Native Americans. Naia’s DNA also matches with people native to Siberia, a part of Russia. Scientists have long thought that ancient people from this area arrived in Alaska during the last ice age. They were the first humans to live in the Americas. And Naia proves how far south they went. (Mexico is a country to the south of the US.)
In 2014 the scientists decided to bring up Naia’s skull from the cave to protect it from curious divers. So it was taken to a lab, where it remains today.

A.Scientists tried to protect it.
B.The temperature was fine in there.
C.It was against the law to take it out.
D.It would help scientists study the cave,
4、Who were Naia’s distant ancestors?
A.Early humans in Greece.

23.(8分)The Handshake
I don’t remember the exact date I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. The line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier, who was receiving money from customers.
He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they were purchasing. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and talk with them briefly.
I thought it was strange, but I guessed I had grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of a conversation without thinking. Usually, after a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just say something back quietly.
This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. Meanwhile, the high-tech cash register rang up their purchases and he announced what they owed. When customers handed money to him, he pushed the appropriate keys, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change.
Then magic happened.
He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.
Now it was my turn. I glanced down at the name tag on his red waistcoat, the kind experienced Wal-Mart cashier wore. It read, “Marty.”
Marty told me how much I owed and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine. Smiling, and with a firm handshake…
1、While the author stood in the checkout line, she felt ______.
A.comfortable B.enthusiastic
C.impatient D.embarrassed
2、In the opinion of the author, people tended to ______.
A.remain calm while having a talk B.talk about unimportant topics
C.develop a mindless conversation D.face communication problems
3、The author thought Marty special because ______.
A.he spent as much time as possible serving customers
B.he was patient with all the questions from customers
C.he showed particular interest in customers’ personal life
D.he expressed his sincerity while giving back the change
4、What can we infer from the passage?
A.Marty was a talkative man.
B.Marty cared a lot about what he did.
C.The author failed to get along well with others.
D.The author was dissatisfied with such a waste of time.
24.(8分) You get anxious if there’s no wi-fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain. You feel upset if your phone is getting low on power, and you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you’re not there. All these can be called “always on” stress caused by smart phone addiction.
For some people, smart phones have liberated them from the nine-to-five work. Flexible working has given them more autonomy(自主权)in their working lives and enabled them to spend more time with their friends and families. For many others though, smart phones have become tyrants(暴君)in their pockets, never allowing them to turn them off, relax and recharge their batteries.
Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends in favour of his iPhone. So he developed an app — Moment — to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time they’re spending on the device and set up warnings if the usage limits are breached(突破). “Moment’s goal is to promote balance in your life,” his website explains. “Some time on your phone, some time off it enjoying your loving family and friends around you.”
Dr. Christine Grant, an occupational(职业的)psychologist at Coventry University, said, “The effects of this ‘always on’ culture are that your mind is never resting, and you’re not giving your body time to recover, so you’re always stressed. And the more tired and stressed we get, the more mistakes we make. Physical and mental health can suffer.”
And as the number of connected smart phones is increasing, so is the amount of data. This is leading to a sort of decision paralysis(瘫痪)and is creating more stress in the workplace because people have to receive a broader range of data and communications which are often difficult to manage. “It actually makes it more difficult to make decisions and many do less because they’re controlled by it all and fell they can never escape the office,” said Dr. Christine Grant.
1、What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The popularity of smart phones. B.The progress of modern technology.
C.The signs of “always on” stress. D.The cause of smart phone addiction.
2、Kevin Holesh developed “Moment” to ________.
A.research how people use their mobile phones
B.help people control their use of mobile phones
C.make people love parents and friends around
D.increase the fun of using mobile phones
3、What’s Dr. Christine Grant’s attitude towards “always on” culture?
A.Confused. B.Positive.
C.Doubtful. D.Critical.
4、According to the last paragraph, a greater amount of data means ________.
A.we will become less productive
B.we can make a decision more quickly
C.we will be equipped with more knowledge
D.we can work more effectively
25.(10分) BillieHarries was an American fighter pilot who fought to liberate France from the Nazis. He was shot down and killed in July of 1944 over Nazi-occupied northern France. Due to a series of miscommunications, that information never got back to his wife Peggy. As far as she knew, Bill was just missing. She waited, she said, “All of my life.”
Peggy might never have known the true story if a relative hadn’t looked into his military records a few years ago. She finally got her local congressman(议员)to reopen his case in 2011. She was shocked to learn that in the town of Les Ventes, the main road is actually called Place Billie D.Harris. It’s the same road townspeople have been marchin
