21.(6分)US president Donald Trump has popularized the phrase “fake news” But not too long ago these words in combination would have meant little to everyday English speakers.
Anatoly Liberman, a German, writes about the origins of the word “fake”. The word, it turns out, has a very dark past. The best guess for how “fake” became mainstream, argues Liberman, is that it was a kind used by thieves in the London underworld. But“how it got there, nobody in the world knows, and probably nobody will ever know,” he tells Quartz.
Liberman is a professor at the University of Minnesota and the author of Word Origins and How We Know Them. He writes that early records of “fake” as an English adjective appeared around the middle of the 18th century. The word likely comes from cant, or thief jargon(行话).
The OED mentions “fake” as a verb starting in 1819, which basically meant‘to do”in jargon, but also“to kill , wound, or rob”. An entry from a dictionary that year reads :
“To fake any person or place, to rob them ;to fake a person may also imply to shoot, wound, or cut; to fake a man out and out, is to kill him.”
Liberman traces the word next to Chares Dickens, who used “cly-faker”,where “cly” means pocket, in Oliver Twist. This is how he believes knowledge of “fake”as a word that means to steal, spread. Eventually it became a commonplace English word.
1、The underlined word “fake” in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A.lying
B.true
C.common
D.interesting

3、What is mainly discussed in this passage?
A.The history of English words.
B.Some stories about English words.
C.The importance of the English word “fake”
D.The origins of an English word.
4、What can we infer from this passage?
A.We must focus on the words of Donald Trump.
B.We should study English words very carefully.
C.“Fake” likely comes from words used by a class of people.
D.Anatoly Liberman likes to trace the commonplace English words.
22.(8分)Learning New Vocabulary during Deep Sleep
Sleeping time is sometimes considered unproductive time. This raises the question whether the time spent asleep could be used more productively, e.g. for learning a new language? Up-to-now sleep research focused on the stabilization and strengthening of memories that had been formed during wakefulness. However, learning during sleep has rarely been examined. There is enough evidence for wake-learned information undergoing a revision by replay in the sleeping brain. The replay during sleep strengthens the still weak memory and leaves the newly acquired information in the pre-existing store of knowledge.
If re-play during sleep improves the storage of wake-learned information, then first-play, i.e. the initial processing of new information, should also be possible during sleep.
The research group of Katharina Henke examined whether a sleeping person is able to form new semantic(语义的)associations between played foreign words and translation words during the brain cells’ active states, the so-called “Up-states.” It turned out to be that what they thought was reasonable. When we reach deep sleep stages, our brain cells progressively coordinate their activity. During deep sleep, the brain cells are commonly active for a brief period of time before they jointly enter into a state of brief inactivity. The active state is called “Up-state” and the inactive state “Down-state”. The two states alternate(交替)about every half-second.
New evidence for sleep-learning challenges current theories of sleep and theories of memory. The concept of sleep that we are separated from the physical environment is no longer reasonable. "It’s false that complex learning be impossible during deep sleep," says Simon Ruch, co-first-author. "In how far and with what consequences deep sleep can be applied for the acquisition of new information will be a topic of research in upcoming years," says Katharina Henke.
The research group of Katharina Henke is part of the Interfaculty Research Cooperation (IRC). Thirteen research groups in medicine, biology and psychology are part of the IRC.The aim of these research groups is to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms(原理)involved in sleep and consciousness.

24.(8分)In the last few weeks, donations have been mailed to community organizations in and near Redford Township by the sender who only identifies as “Anonymous - 1679”, according to My Fox Detroit.
So far, envelopes, each filled with $1,000 cash, have been sent to the local library, an animal welfare non-profit, a civic and leadership training group, a credit union and the Redford Goodfellows, a group that helps needy families get holiday meals and gifts for their children.
There is one clue about the identity of the giver. According to the Observer & Eccentric, the Community Choice Credit Union in Redford received the first envelope, which also included a riddle: “Know the clue, Know the who, Anonymous - 1679.”
Spread around one community, the donations could make a serious impact.
The credit union told the paper that the donation will go to their foundation, which gives up to $100,000 in college scholarships to Michigan high school graduates each year.
Tail Waggers 1990 in nearby Livonia helps owners provide for their pets, offering low-cost vaccinations, a pet food pantry and assistance for pets with serious health problems. Their donation will go toward their new animal clinic, they told Fox.
Cindy Doyle, secretary for the Redford Goodfellows, said that their $1,000 donation will likely cover food, clothes and presents for 10 families; last year the organization served 225 families total.
“That money will go a long way to brighten the Christmas of several children this year,” the Redford Township Police posted on Facebook, on behalf of their department and the Good fellows.
“To that generous person... Thank You!”
Anonymous 1679 has given more than money — he or she has also directed attention to some of the organizations helping the community, and may even inspire others to give. 25.(10分) Making employees feel happy and healthy at work is good for many businesses. But it isn’t always an easy thing. A study suggests that only 33% of the U. S. employees consider themselves fully engaged (投身于)in work, while 16% are greatly disengaged, and 51% are just showing up.
But there is an exception. When it comes to employee engagement, it seems that employees in small companies are doing better. According to the same research, the largest U. S. companies are at the lowest levels of engagement, while companies with fewer than 25 employees are at the highest. And in one recent report, 75% of small business workers surveyed said they were “very” or “extremely” satisfied with their role as a small company employee.
