However, the 58-year-old Frenchman’s daily 30-minute flight is not just to enjoy the impressive views, but to guide flocks (鸟群) of lesser white-fronted geese (小白额雁) through safe migration paths which the birds can teach future generations. His deed began in 1995 when he noticed their declining population in the wilds of Lapland, Sweden. To prevent their numbers from dropping further, Moullec tried to get the threatened species to follow him along migration routes that would protect them from bird hunters. However, getting grown geese to follow his lead proved challenging. As young geese imitate and follow whomever they view as their parent, Moullec decided to raise the geese from birth. To help raise funds and awareness of his job to protect not just the geese but birds worldwide, Moullec often allows paying tourists to join him on the 30-minute-long flights aboard his aircraft. In addition to the trained birds flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a 15-hour plane flight away, are treated to a variety of crane and geese species as well as breathtaking views of castles and cities. He often brings his camera along for the flights, capturing photos not just for their beauty, but for what they describe. Moullec believes the use of agricultural chemicals has done harm to wild European birds, with more than a third disappearing in the last 30 years. “It's a disaster,” he said. “My beautiful images with flying birds should be used to tell this story. ” 1、Why does “Birdman” always fly to the sky on his aircraft? A.To observe geese along their migration routes. B.To follow geese through safe migration paths. C.To take visitors to operate his adapted aircraft. D.To guide geese fly safely during the migration. 2、What do we know about “Birdman”? A.He is a nature lover. B.He is a bird watcher. C.He is a volunteer pilot. D.He is a bird hunter. 3、What does Moullec often take photos in his flights for? A.Recording the use of agricultural chemicals. B.Showing serious damage caused by chemicals. C.Describing his experiences with flying birds. D.Capturing the beautiful views of birds and cities. 4、What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Birdman Guides Flocks to Learn to Fly. B.Birdman Finds Birds Disappearing. C.Birdman Helps Flocks Safely Migrate. D.Birdman Protects Birds From Hunters. 22.(8分)“Are you going to Seattle?” an anxious—looking woman asked a female traveler at the Amtrak Station in Sacramento. “No, I’m going to Eugene,” the traveler replied. “Oh, I was hoping you could watch out for my daughter, she’s never been on a train before.” Since I am a seasoned train traveler, I know that seats and cars are assigned by destination. So I approached the woman and her frightened—looking daughter and told them that her daughter could sit with me and that I would take care of her for the duration of the journey. The train had arrived 25 minutes late, and people rushed to get their seat assignments. The conductor wanted to know if there were people traveling together, so I pushed my way to the front of the line with the girl and we were arranged to sit next to each other. Once on board, I showed her where to put her luggage, and took her to the bathroom area. We settled down to sleep. In the morning, she became comfortable enough to do what most 15—year olds do; talk and text on her mobile phone. Throughout the trip, I made sure she picked up her ID, which had fallen out of her backpack, and generally kept an eye on her in a non—intrusive way. I hope someone takes her under their wing when she flies (another anxiety—producing first) back to Sacramento. I do hope that kindness will spread around the world through these ways. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolved(旋转)around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. 1、Where was the author going by train? A.Seattle B.Eugene. C.Sacramento. D.Amtrak. 2、Why did the author push to the front of the line? A.To get his seat assignment. B.To get a seat in the front. C.To help the girl find her seat. D.To ask for the two seats next to each other. 3、What can be learnt from the text? A.The girl has never travelled by air before. B.The girl has never been to Seattle before. C.The mother and daughter have never taken the train before. D.The girl was too nervous to do nothing alone throughout the trip. 4、What does the author’s story intend to tell us? A.Experience is the best teacher. B.You never know till you have tried. C.Happiness lies in giving help to others. D.Do something good even though it may be tiny. 23.(8分) While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, we finally have some convincing evidence. For their study, biologist Corson Miller and his team exposes eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy. Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry. Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That's because the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face. After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions. They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to withdraw quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer "game" That scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed. The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly. Since the touch-screen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous studies dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner. 1、How did the scientists conduct the experiment? A.By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry. B.By mixing the selected dogs together. C.By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen. D.By showing digital pictures of women’s happy or angry faces. 2、The underlined word “trepidation” in Paragraph 5 probably means . A.fear and hesitation B.curiosity and eagerness C.excitement and happiness D.doubt and sadness 3、According to the last paragraph, dogs with female owners______________. A.are fond of the male faces B.are uninterested in telling the emotions on the entire faces C.have difficulty telling the moods on the faces of males D.can only recognize emotions of females 4、What is the best title for this passage? A.Mood Changes Influence Dogs B.Dogs Identify the Moods C.dogs and Their Owners D.Dog’s Mood Research 24.(8分)Persuasion is the art of convincing someone to agree with you. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion:ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is a speakers way of convincing the audience that she is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education she has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman. A speaker can also create ethos by convincing the audience that she is a good person. If an audience cannot trust you,you will not be able to persuade them. Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example,a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them support him. Similarly,an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats,to make the viewers feel pity. If the audience feels bad for the animals, they will be more likely to donate money. Logos is the use of facts, statistics,or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying "believe me". Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade their audiences. So,the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial,or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money,be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion. 1、Why does the author say persuasion is an art? ______ A.They both entertain the audience. B.They both require great skills to achieve. C.They both demand full attention from the audience. D.They were both common topics of ancient Greek writers. 2、How is a speaker able to show her ethos to the audience? ______ A.By expressing her sympathy with the audience. B.By telling the audience about her personal preference. C.By using beautiful language to make her statements attractive. D.By showing her knowledge and experience relating to the topic. 3、What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion? ______ A.Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion. B.Each aspect has a different effect on the audience. C.Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable. D.Political leaders mostly use pathos to persuade their audience. 4、An advertisement for washing powder which claims that “scientific tests show that our powder kills 95% of all bacteria” is mainly using ______ . A.ethos B.pathos C.logos D.a combination of all three 25.(10分)Does Fame Drive You Crazy? Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi(狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids(小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature! According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people—worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villarreal says, “they feel separated and alone.” The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his soldout readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain(抱怨) about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about filmstars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a
