21.(6分)Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration (重新校对) and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To mitigate the drawback,we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm(计算程序) is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
1、Who is the smartphone app designed for?
A.People with motor eye disease.
B.People suffering from eye communication.
C.People with problems in intelligence.
D.People suffering from motor neurone disease.
2、The underlined word “mitigate” in the fifth paragraph probably means ________.
A.relieve B.get rid of
C.remove D.find
3、According to the text, ________.
A.for people suffering from ALS, eye movement is one of the best ways to communicate.
B.a new communication system that runs on a smartphone is designed to be immobile.
C.the speaker could use the app by pointing their smartphone at the listener.
D.the artificial intelligence algorithm will translate sentences for speakers.
22.(8分)Exploit your parking space
An unused parking space or garage can make money. If you live near a city center or an airport, you could make anything up to £200 or £300 a week. Put an advertisement for free on Letpark or Atmyhousepark.
Rent a room
Spare room? Not only will a lodger(房客)earn you an income, but also, thanks to the government-backed “rent a room” program, you won’t have to pay any tax on the first £4500 you make per year. Try advertising your room on Roomspare or Roommateeasy.
Make money during special events
Don’t want a full-time lodger? Then rent on a short-term basis. If you live in the capital, renting a room out during the Olympics or other big events could bring in money. Grashpadder can advertise your space.
Live on set
Renting your home out as a “film set” could earn you hundreds of pounds a day, depending on the film production company and how long your home is needed. A quick search on the Internet will bring up dozens of online companies that allow you to register your home for free—but you will be charged if your home gets picked.
Use your roof
You need the right kind of roof, but some energy companies pay the cost of fixing solar equipment (around £14,000), and let you use the energy produced for nothing. In return, they get paid for unused energy fed back into the National Grid. However, you have to sign a 25-year agreement with the supplier, which could prevent you from changing the roof.
1、If you earn £5,000 from renting a room in one year, the tax you need to pay will be based on _______.
A.£500 B.£800
C.£4500 D.£5000
2、Where can you put an advertisement to rent out a room during a big event?
A.On Letpark. B.On Roomspare.
C.On Grashpadder. D.On Roommateeasy.
3、If you want to use energy free, you have to _______.
A.keep the roof unchanged for within 25 years
B.sign an agreement with the government
C.sell the roof to some energy companies
D.pay around £14,000 for the equipment
4、For whom the text most probably written?
A.Lodgers. B.House owners.
C.Advertisers. D.Online companies
23.(8分)As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. “The woods” was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend’s house and found him not at home, his mother might say, “Oh, he’s out in the woods,” with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance. It’s similar to the tone people sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I’m looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even “away from his desk”. For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for awhile.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got “lost” and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.
1、The author and his friends were often out in the woods to .
A.spend their free time
B.play golf and other sports
C.avoid doing their schoolwork
D.keep away from their parents
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.The activities in the woods were well planned.
B.Human history is not the result of exploration.
C.Exploration should be a systematic activity.
D.The author explored in the woods aimlessly
3、The underlined word “skeptical” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .
A.calm B.doubtful
C.serious D.optimistic
4、The reason why we visited the four or five trees regularly is the following except that .
A.they were tall beeches
B.they were easy to climb
C.they were not hi to climb
D.they were comfortable to sit in
5、How does the author feel about his childhood?
A.Happy but short
B.Lonely but memorable.
C.Boring and meaningless.
D.Long and unforgettable.
24.(8分) Trees, some of the tallest in the world, towered above Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues each morning as they walked deep into the rainforest in the Maliau Basin in Borneo, where they had set up a set of experiments to look at the ecological effects of small creatures: termites (白蚁).
Termites get a bum rap. They make headlines for chewing up billions of dollars of property each year in the U. S. And they are responsible for something like two percent of global carbon emissions, simply as a result of their huge populations and preference for chewing through carbonrich materials. A whole industry is aiming at killing them.
But they play a key role in many natural ecosystems. Scientists have known for years that in tropical (热带的) forests, termites chew up fallen leaves and dead wood, keeping the fallen material under control and letting nutrients from the dead material back into the system to be used by other plants, insects, and animals. But they didn’t know exactly how important the insects were in keeping the forest healthy and functional, so they removed termites from a particular spot in the forest and saw how it responded.
As luck would have it, Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues started their experiment when the forest was hit by an extreme drought (干旱). During the non-drought years, they saw there wasn’t much difference between the normal plots and the ones where they’d removed the termites. But during the drought, the effects were marked. What they found was unexpected: in the termite-rich areas, the soil stayed slightly wet, more tree seedlings sprouted (抽芽), and the system was full of activity despite the long, hard dry spell.
For Griffiths, it was only because they happened to study the drought that they could pick out the real importance of termites to the system, she points out. “And that rings alarm bells in my head,” she says, “because it makes me think, well what else don’t we know? If we start damaging biological communities, we don’t know what that will do.”
1、Which of the following best explains “a bum rap” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Unfair blame. B.Wide popularity.
C.Public attention. D.Special preference.
2、What have scientists learned about termites?
A.They do serious harm to tropical rainforests.
B.They contribute a lot to the ecosystem they live in.
C.They act as food for other plants, insects and animals.
D.They speed up the loss of nutrition in the rainforest.
3、What can we infer from the finding of Griffiths experiment?
A.Termites help rainforests survive climate change.
B.Termites prefer drought years to non-drought ones.
C.Termites benefit more from the forest during the drought.
D.Termites enjoy eating tree seedlings during the drought.
4、What does Griffiths tell us in the last paragraph?
A.Termites are now in danger of extinction.
B.Termites damage biological communities.
C.We should think twice before damaging a species.
D.We should study the drought to improve the system.
25.(10分)The best password managers
LastPass
Perhaps the best-known password manger made news last November by announcing that its app would be free across all platforms. “By offering LastPass for free across all your devices, we’re making it that much easier for everyone to make good password habits the rule, while resetting the expectations of what a great password management experience should be in a multi-device world,” Joe Siegrist, vice president of LastPass, wrote in a blog post.
Dashlane
You need to pay $39.99 for the updated version, which allows you to sync(同步)and share with all your devices. The free version is great if you just need the manager on one device. Dashlane provides a dashboard that judges how secure your passwords are, so you can see in real time if your new password is more secure than the old one, and it’ll automatically change your password for you if needed.
Keepass
One big reason why might choose Keepass is that Keepass doesn’t use a cloud to keep track of all of your passwords. Instead, all your information is kept on your own computer. That’s bad news if your computer dies or gets stolen and you haven’t backed it up, but if you’re cautious about a cloud-based system, this open-source platform might be the way to go.
Sticky Password
If safety and security are your biggest concerns, Sticky Password is a good option, especially considering its team from AVG Technologies. Perhaps its biggest feature is
